Lindsey Buckingham is a virtuosic guitar player, but he plays so smoothly and so within the song, his talent rarely becomes apparent. Good ear on catching the brief counter melody in his last solo.

apparent, but his finger style can sometimes even feel transparent and just really well dialed in with the mix as to be clear. Like here in Gypsy, its not really a rhythm part in the normal sense so it blends, but in Landslide its rhythm and melodic counterpoint and isnt transparent at all by comparison.

When I was in my early 30s in the late 90s, I got told by several people that I looked like Stevie Nicks. I wasn't trying, but my face and my love of flowing clothes somehow gave that impression. I don't think she was considered a classic beauty, but we loved how she looked nonetheless. I should have dressed up as her for Halloween! Then again, that would have been predicated on ever actually being invited to some Halloween event. I listened to them a lot as a kid, because my much older brother loved the band. He was in love with Stevie Nicks. (But in his eyes, Linda Ronstadt was the perfect woman 🙂 I don't know whatever became of her. She was huge, and then I never heard another word.)

I'm so glad you mentioned the bass line. John McVie often doesn't get enough credit for his virtuosity. Especially on a song like this, he really keeps it grounded while providing some essential melodic elements. Also, now I want to hear some one record a cover of this song with a harp playing that hook. If you continue down the Fleetwood Mac rabbit hole, you'll likely be pleasantly surprised at the wide range of musical styles they cover. They are incredibly competent musicians individually, but they work well as a unit. Thank you for your reaction to this, especially your insightful comments.🌈💞🌟

Thank you Amy. Stevie Nicks wrote this song and planned to include it on her 1980 solo album Bella Donna. She didn't have room for it on the album, so she held it over for Fleetwood Mac's Mirage album. By this time, her friend Robin Anderson was dying of leukemia and the song became a tribute to her. The "gypsy" is the free and fearless side of one's personality, which Stevie Nicks channels in the song.

Bella Donna was good, especially "Edge Of Seventeen"" (amazing, to be exact), but I must admit, I prefer "The Other Side Of The Mirror", maybe it´s more in the rock genre ("Long Way To Go", "Whole Lotta Trouble", "Doing The Best I Can").
@caps689

It was more that they couldn't get the song quite right than there wasn't room. If this version of the song had been on Bella Donna it would have been the best song on the album. There's an hour or so video (really audio) on YT of different working versions of the song and about 50 minutes in it gets to Lindsey & FM and the magic happens. Tom Petty (who had arranged a rocking version of Gypsy that's in that video) said when he heard Gypsy on the radio said Lindsey really knew what he was doing.

For one of the worlds best rock bands wilth beautiful melodies and music, the agony the members went through, throughout their careers is amazing. Heartbreak, love, breakups etc. all going on while writing and recording wonderful and meaningful music. You are in for a treat. I suggest "Chains" next.

Hi Amy, good morning. Thank you for this beautiful song reaction. I have loved it since I first heard it on the radio. Then when I saw the video clip at MTV, I found it even better because of the oniric images and Stevie Nicks's performance, and her floating clothes while she danced. It was one of the great feelings in my teenage life that just hearing a single song provided me. The song is uplifting, brings some innocence feeling, and makes me happy. The arrangement is also great.

I'm happy you have now heard Fleetwood Mac. This is One of their many great songs. You could pick any song on their 1977 Rumours album and it will be a great song. I know several who consider it one of the greatest albums ever made. Loved the arpeggio on your harp. I also really liked how you pointed out how the instruments interplay with both the backing and lead vocals. They are all excellent musicians, both Lindsey Buckingham (guitar) and Christine McVie (piano) also sing lead vocals on other songs, with Stevie being the one with the very unique voice. John McVie is on bass and the "Mac" in Fleetwood Mac, and Mick Fleetwood is the drummer. I really enjoyed this and look forward to when you explore more Fleetwood Mac.
@Marnie-hates-winter

I agree with you completely, except by calling the drummer an "excellent musician". To me, the drumming in most songs is the thing that makes it a really, really good basic rock song you want to listen to at a party, versus something you add to your main Spotify playlist and can listen to until the day you die. The songs Rhiannon and Tusk have some creative drumming. But most of it is so basic, it irritates me, even while enjoying the song otherwise. In this particular song, the drums were just a metronome. Basic 8th note beat that you learn your first drum lesson. And I know drums should serve the song. You don't start playing crazy Tool drumming in a basic rock song like this, but this is TOO basic. But still, they are one of the best rock bands, imo. And Stevie Nicks is one of the best rock songwriters of the 20th century, imo. They deserve all the credit and acclaim that they get, I just have a problem specifically with the drummer.

@@Marnie-hates-winter Hey Marnee! How is your drumming going? I remember that you were just getting started about the time Amy started her channel. I'm sure you are doing much better than I have been doing, since I have hardly touched my drums the last few years. I really need to get back to it. I have both acoustic and electronic sets, and I am still have my Drumeo membership which I renew each year with the intent to get back to it. I initially started losing focus on it once I started to focus on bass more, and now I haven't been doing much with it either over the last 6 months. Not sure why I lost my motivation. I hope I get it back soon.

@@LeeKennison Hi, Lee! That is truly AMAZING that you remember that I was learning drums! Well, I had to take some breaks here and there due to a bad shoulder, (which is better now). I was really into it for quite a while. But then I realized I don't have much aptitude for it and then I started just playing songs and practicing less, not really working on speed, technique, and other exercises or really anything other than playing songs. I seem to be okay with timing and limb independence, but where I really fail is in speed and musicality. I had did have four fun songs I was still working on, but Drumeo went and deleted many thousands of their songs from their library (due to copyright changes), including all 4 songs I was working on. Did you know about that big thing? Lots of people really upset. I'm considering cancelling my membership. Since then, I almost completely lost my mojo and haven't been really playing too often. But if you like, you can check out my last submission to Drumeo for feedback. It was one of the songs I was working on when they deleted it. (It was a work in progress, not polished yet!) The first 10 seconds was this crazy double bass drum that was super fun to learn. I don't expect you to watch, but in case you're interested.... (It's an unlisted link - not searchable on KZbin.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqKYYZmDja6XhLM I am still working a little on two songs. One is California Dreamin' by The Mamas and the Papas. It's a "beginner" song, but still challenging for me. It has a beat during the chorus which is just enough off of your basic snare pattern that it was harder for me to pick up than I thought. Couldn't rely on my muscle memory. It's quite fun to play. Not all "easy" drum parts are boring to me! 😀 Remind me - did you play drums for a long time, or were you just starting to learn them a few years ago? What's your favorite kind of stuff to play on bass? How did you learn? I'd like to learn some bass eventually. More just for fun, and maybe would help me with drumming. Alas, I have the tiniest little fingers. Then again, there is a really kick-ass bassist in my new favorite band and she doesn't look as small as me, but probably isn't very big and definitely still doesn't have fingers like Jimmy Hendrix. I may put a paid request to have Amy review this band at some point! Would like to see more female artists and also something really new. In case you're interested, they are a band from Indonesia: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWjGdJyDga2so6csi=1J5hTCj_W01LjSxR&t=1851 Always nice to hear from you. @@Marnie-hates-winter That is awesome Marnee, good job on this song and nice kit. Thanks for sharing. I have a Yamaha DTX542K Electronic Drum Set with double bass, along with a Yamaha Stage Custom for most of the drums in my acoustic kit (3 rack toms and 2 floor toms) with a better quality Yamaha Tour Custom snare. I have low volume drum heads and cymbals on the acoustic to be kind to my neighbor, since I live in a townhouse with a shared wall. I also checked out the VoB video. I'm really impressed by the bass player, and the drummer is also very impressive. I'm sure the guitar player is great too, but the bass and drums stood out to me the most. Have you ever heard Mohini Dey? She is from India and is one of the most impressive contemporary bass players I have seen recently. She plays in several different genres, with metal probably being her main focus. Rick Beato did an interview with her in which she really shows off her incredible abilities, including being an amazing funk slap bass player. She also has an amazing personality and story. She was in the process of moving from India to Nashville, which is where Amy & Vlad are, so I sent them a message telling them that they should try to get an interview with her. Amy would love her since she has a very deep music theory knowledge and has some expertise in Indian classical music. She really is one of the most amazing musicians I have seen recently. If you get a chance check out her Beato interview it is well worth a watch. I have a lot more to say on some of your other points and questions, so I will continue with this tomorrow when I have some more time and to keep this post from being too long. For now I just wanted to let you know I checked out your videos. I always enjoy hearing from you. I don't spend as much time reading comments lately, so I'm sure I have missed a lot of great posts that you have been making. Most of my time has been focused on other things lately, unfortunately working on getting better at playing my various instruments hasn't been one of them though.

Lindsey's guitar style is unique and so appealing. And Mac's marvelous background vocals stem in part from Lindsey's love of Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys. Great analysis in terms of the weaving quality. It really has that. They can do light, they can do rock, they can do "strange" -- that's what happens when you have three solid songwriters and a very inventive musical force in Buckingham.

Santana's "Black Magic Woman" was a cover of the original blues based Fleetwood Mac's song. The original members, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and Peter Green had previously played in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Guitarist Peter Green left in 1970 due to mental health and drug problems,and McVie's wife, keyboardist Christine McVie joined shortly afterwards. When Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham (who were a duo) joined in 1974, the band's new sound and change in direction became very successful.

They have bright and colorful music as well as stormy and dark, with many different flavors of sound. As other have mentioned, Rumoura is an epic album. Read thier history and what was going on within the group when the album was made. It's important to know thier history to understand some of thier music , especially every song on the Rumours album. To me their personal interactions within the group remind me of what occured the beatles somewhat, I'm sure there are others.

Great reaction Amy, as I've said before it would be interesting for you to compare late 1960s bluesy Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac with the post- Buckingham Nicks lineup. They are radically different, it is the English rhythm section of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie plus songwriter Christine McVie who are common to both. Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks are American. With Christine's death I think the band has ceased producing new material.

You already heard one of their early hits Black Magic Woman by guitarist Peter Green. Drummer Fleetwood, bassist McVie and his piano-playing wife Christine were the remaining members after the break of the original R&B band. The special bass/drums sound stayed while the style changed when integrating guitarist Buckingham and his girlfriend Stevie Nicks with her characteristic singing. Also Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie are good singers, so now there were three singers in the band. They made many hits, Gypsy was in fact not one the hits but radios of different kind liked it: In the nineties it was calculated that Gypsy was the most played song on radio worldwide ever!!! Gypsy is an example of the overall sound of the band, but it doesn't show Buckinghams magic: He is together with Mark Knofler one the best in fiingerpicking and do it also on electric guitar. This leads to one of their songs qualify for you Amy to compare two different versions. From 14th album comes the song Big Love, when the band much later made a HQ DVD of a concert, Buckingham showcase his fingerpicking in a more intense version. The rest of the band simply take a rest, while Buckingham impress the whole hall solo. Big Big (Love)! Unfortunately I never saw them live: Their tickets was the most expensive ever.

The video, w/ it's 1920's time frame (in b/w) & the innovative choreography, really adds to the song's overall appeal. BTW, the opening line's mention of the Velvet Underground refers to an eclectic clothing emporium in Frisco, I believe, that was (is?) a favorite of Stevie's.

Before that, they started as a blues rock band and then transitioned to folk rock, soft rock and art rock. Check out these songs: - Dreams - The Chain - Go Your Own Way - Sara - Rhiannon - Landslide - Don't Stop - Silver Springs - Albatross - You Make Loving Fun - Need Your Love So Bad - Little Lies

Don't know if you've done any Fleetwood Mac on this channel, but this song and album came along at the very end of their most successful run of albums that started with 1975's self-titled LP. If you want to fully understand the history of rock, you'll need to dig into some of the seminal 60's British blues rock outfits that featured guitarists like Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Peter Green. Peter Green founded FM in 1967, along with bassist John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood (the only original members still around for this album). However, this version of Fleetwood Mac in 1982 was many lineup changes later, and had an entirely different sound compared to FM's blues-y origins. This lineup included Americans Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, who were major songwriters in the group, both coming from the 70's California singer-songwriter scene that spawned The Eagles, Jackson Brown, etc. BTW, the breezy vibe with those images of lace and paper flowers is right on the money. Stevie Nicks was well known for her lace-y boho fashions, which she pushed on stage and in music videos.

They were among the best in constructing/composing songs to perfection, which of course lends itself to very pleasant sounding results But they were not short of drama too. The Chain would be a big reccomandation Also more expressive Sievie songs with her haunting voice Landslide Rhiannon Gold Dust Woman And also must hear is Christine singing Songbird

Fleetwood Mac songs can vary quite a bit depending on who wrote the song, who sings it, etc. Overall, I'd say that they tend towards a light sound, but how they sound always serves the song.

The Chain. Live performance actually amazing. The The interplay on stage between Nicks and Buckingham is amazing on that performance. The two had been passionately in love at one point, but it went south and they kept performing together for a while. The tension in the live performance is so thick you can cut it with a knife...and makes it DELICIOUS, lol! A VERY capable group of musicians, one of the few group that really nail live performance perfectly. Respect.

Another band that could provide a FM50 series. Even kids know FM. That's the staying power. Songs with melodies and rhythm that sound simple, and vocals that don't seem astonishing. But the whole package (as in Gypsy) results in us being swept away, or even swept *into* the song.

Hi I have been learning this in different keys to suit my voice. The song is F Major but it is 0.1 cent out of tune, which I fixed with software. That is why your harp was lemon juicy. 😊 You harp is in perfect tune. The song is about their relationship splitting up. He wanted kids she didn't. She goes back to being an artist on the road. She knows that he knows lighting strikes between 2 souls on rare occasions. He wants him to miss her. She is showing him his gypsy girl.

i appreciate what Amy had to say about the lightness and the added texture towards the end. Fleetwood Mac was one of the first rock bands I paid attention to as a kid. My brother liked them. I think highly of them. Their acclaim is well-deserved. I think Stevie Nicks is one of the best rock songwriters of the 20th century. But they aren't a band that I sit around listening to. I have "liked" many of their songs on Spotify, but don't have them on my main playlist. To me, the music is still just basic rock. It's just some of the best of the basic rock. I have a problem with the drummer in this band. In fact, I have a problem with all drummers of basic rock bands, but the drummer in this band bugs me more than most. The drumming in basic rock bands is why I don't much care for basic rock. If you listen to this, the drummer is playing just a basic 8th note rock beat the entire time, or almost the entire time. You learn that in your first drum lesson. It's SO BORING. It distracts me from the song. But that's what basic rock is. You can't expect he'd go off and play some Yes- or Tool-style drumming on a song like this. But for heaven's sakes, at least add a little flair at some point. Why not just turn on a metronome? That's all they are is a metronome, not really part of the music. I think Stevie Nicks was cheated being a band with such an uncreative drummer. (But, to give the drummer credit, the drumming on Rhiannon, and Tusk is interesting. Not something that fills your mind with images and color like a Pink Floyd tune, but it was creative and interesting. Did they have a different drummer on those songs than on most of their songs?)

Has anybody told Amy about the history of the band? Mick Fleetwood, the drummer, and John McVie, the bass, are the only continuous members. This lineup was formed in 1974 after years of instablity as a popular but not top tier, in sales, psychedelic blues band. A recording engineer played Fleetwood a song he'd recorded for a folk rock duet, Buckingham Nicks. He wanted Lindsey Buckingham to join FM, but he said no deal without Stevie Nicks. The band was already developing a lighter sound so Lindsey and Stevie fit right in.

Back in the day, we would refer to FM's music as "groovy", or "in a groove" which is the idea that a vinyl record would get stuck playing the same desirable thing over and over. It sort of makes you gyrate inside rather than dance.
