This song was about her best friend that died of cancer, and Stevie is referring herself as the single gypsy who goes on without her best friend. She’s talking about her friendship with her best friend. She’s dancing away from you now and you see your gypsy she was just a wish. It all means that her best friend is gone and now she has her memories.

Also, Stevie Nicks was on tour when her best friend passed away, so she felt guilty. She ended up entering a man/woman "relationship" with her best friend's husband in order to raise her friend's baby. The husband was still deeply in grief. Parts of that are in the song. She and her friend looked similar, too. One night the husband walked into the room and - seeing Stevie from behind - mistook her for his deceased wife. He broke down... Also, one time Stevie saw the rocking chair move by itself in the baby's room. She reached her breaking point somehow and walked out on him and the baby never looking back. As of the date of the interview she gave, she had never seen the child ever again. She interspersed parts of this traumatic era into the song, woven together like thread. Speaking of thread, here's something about grief: Your absence has gone through me like thread through a needle everything I do is stitched with its color

This song was actually written by Stevie in 1979 when her friend Robin was still alive. It was released in September of 1982, right before Robin died on October 5th of 1982. Stevie started dedicating it to Robin sometime after that. Probably because it kind of reminded her of Robin in some way.

This song takes me back in time. She's singing about the person she used to be and how that person is gone, only the memories are left. Every time I hear this song, I'm transported back to different parts of my life and I feel so many emotions. Not just nostalgia, also so many regrets and so much pain but at the same time joy that I've made it to where I am now. If you haven't yet, consider reacting to Landslide by Fleetwood Mac. Also "Crazy on You" "Straight On" and "Barracuda" by the band Heart from the same era.

For me: Stevie’s vocals, lyrics and music touches the soul and puts you in that place where you’re relating to the song and the vibe as much as she did when she experienced it and wrote it. And that truly is bewitching 🤩
@inspectorvol9512 жыл бұрын
The impetus for this song was when Stevie was an unknown aspiring artist who frequented a clothing store where she lived called the Velvet Underground. All the starving artists and hippies of the day went there for cheap but stylish clothes. The first few lines of lyrics describe the place. Heard her explain this in concert a few years back when Christine came back to the group.

Also, Stevie is singing about her best friend, Robin Anderson, who died of leukemia two days after giving birth. She was diagnosed while pregnant. Three months later, Stevie married Robin's husband in order to be a mother to her friend's baby. The marriage lasted three months, because they weren't in love. Referencing the lines in the song "she was JUST a wish. She was JUST a WISH. And her memory is all that's left for you now..."

@@mranonymoUs23384 Thank you! Yes. There was an overlap created when Stevie tried to encompass deceased Robin's life. Two gypsies. I think Stevie felt she was trying to fill her friend's shoes and it gave her strange vibes. It even affected and confused Robin's husband. One time Stevie went into the nursery and an empty rocking chair was rocking.
