This looks awesome. The only thing I’d change is the roost to a 2 x 4, it’s better for their feet to sit flat and also for colder climates, allows them to completely cover their feet with their feathers when they roost to help prevent frostbite. Looks like a great setup and easy to clean!
@shannonartola51593 жыл бұрын
I heard the opposite. Chickens aren’t naturally flat footed and prefer to roost in trees so you want to use exactly what he has in this video 🤷🏻♀️

@@kellydavis6316 thanks for responding, I wasn't sure. Can I use a 2 by 2? Or will those warp over time.
@kellydavis63162 жыл бұрын
@@winniecash1654 my dad used 2x2s. Some spaced 4 to 6 inches apart going up with a slight slant like theater seating. Each chicken could roost wherever. They would have there feet on 1 board and kind of sit down and back basically using 2 boards. Other areas about 8-10 inches apart and those would have their tail hanging down between boards. 3 of the hens never really roosted. They slept in the laying box all the time on hay. It took many years for the board warp to be a problem. I think the chickens had different preferences because they weren't all the same breed. There were 10-30 at any given time. The coop was 10x16. They were let out to graze everyday. This guys watering system is good to stay clean and easy. We had a baby pool in the yard with about 3 inches of water they would get in and drink and bathe. Cute but a huge pain. It was a mess to keep clean and change.

On my coop, I use hay for bedding. Every so often, I rake it up and put it in my garden for mulch. Plus the chicken crap makes good fertilizer. I also have 9 hens. With the cost of feed, if I can break even on eggs, I'm happy. It's more of a knowing where your food comes from thing for me. I let them out in the yard to eat before dark for a few minutes. They will go back in the pen on their own at dark thirty. Plus I feed them garden waste. They like anything green. Good luck all.

I would say this Coupe is darn near perfect the only thing is they do want a wider base to roost on the reason they say not to use a two-by-four is because there Feet Don't wrap around them good if they are not rounded off you can use any flat piece of wood that is not quite as wide is a 2 by 4 if you would like. They will get up on sticks in trees during the day but to sleep at night they fall back on their heels and use more of their leg area for support so they do need a wider base than just those branches. I am 55 years old and have had chickens since I was a little girl I have chickens right now and I can tell you you have done everything right but the roosting sticks need to be wider and a little flattered for them to sleep at night. Beautiful Coupe very secure very well done Bravo!

Very nice, one of the best I've ever seen, very very nice job... Two things though: you should replace your fence with a smaller one, that's an easy fix and you will never get any weasel/marten go thru and kill everyone. Second, the inside is very nice but lots of gaps everywhere between the wood, which is paradise for bugs like lice... You can end up with thousands of lice during hot summers and you won't even notice. the more gaps, the harder it is to get rid of them... It's a nightmare ! You should try to fill them with silicone.

+Glenn Pearson Yeah, I should! I happened to have a trickle charger already so this route was free, but a solar panel would make things a lot easier. It's a great chicken coop but there's one thing about the nesting boxes I think I'll share. I've heard in lots of places that if your door to the nesting boxes is at the top, it freaks the chickens out when you open it as they think it's an aerial predator. But if you have a door on the side, like the Carolina Coops nesting boxes for example, your chickens are way more calm if they see you open it. Enjoy the 7-year late advice :)

Good job, this is the best coop other than mine that I've seen on KZbin. And you're right, they prefer the rounded roost except I stagger mine, one a bit higher than the other with 8" in-between roosts. Another thing I do differently is I hinge my roosts and support one end with a counter weight. When the birds come in to roost at night, the weight of the bird causes the drooping roost to sag, closing a contact, lighting the lamps. Great job. BTW... I use sand as litter also.
@E_Fleming6 жыл бұрын
That’s awesome how you rigged up the roost lamps. I had gone back and forth about roost height, but I believe I read that the higher roosts might be the preferred spot...giving reason for the birds to establish a pecking order. Who knows. Sounds like you have a great setup
@captainnemonadie65416 жыл бұрын
Thanks, but the idea of using the weight of roosting chickens in-order to turn village street lights on at dusk originated from some Kiwi about 100 years ago, before the advent of automatic switches. I wish I could claim it. The upper roost at 8ft has sufficient space for all the birds to roost without crowding. The 8' spacing between the roosts is enough to prevent the bird litter from dropping on a lower roosting bird. The lower roost at 4ft serves two purposes. It's easier for the heavier birds and younger birds to do a two step jump when headed for the upper roost. It also gives them a better opportunity to get settled in her selected space with fewer arguments between birds. I used the same techniques for roosts on the other side of the coop where the 2 tier laying boxes are located at 6' above the floor and 18' for the upper..

We also put sand down in the chick yard. We live in the city and started putting the fresh cut grass in top of the sand. Every 3 months or so we muck it out and use in the garden. It works great and we save money on fertilizer. We also allow the girls to go into the garden two hours before their roost time. We have several pest so added a top to the chick yard and trap opossums and cats and release to animal control. We also have to watch for hawks but enjoy the little hens.

dig a hole about 4' x 4' and 2' deep...fill it with leaves, grass clippings etc....and your chickens will have bug-infested playground to scratch through...and you can empty it out and get the best compost to add to the garden.

Awsome coop! I built it from the instructions on Flickr but did couple little changes. Love it and the birds like it too. Couple friends who have chickens tell me that I built the Taj Mahal for my chickens! So thanks for the great Plans and videos on how you built your!!!

What is the total foot print of this set up? Also the coop size? Great work! Getting ready to build one myself and this is what I've been picturing.

what great ideas! you're a genius! saw one vid where the owner built a sliding "poop catcher" under the coops, with hardware cloth for them to lay eggs on. then he'd roll it out and over to the compost pile to dump the poop. I didn't think hens pooped in their coops. also, would think they'd get really cold in the winter with just hardware cloth under there, but maybe he lived in florida or something. in a month or two, update us on how yours is working out, and what changes you'd make if you had to do it again.

My chickens have never pooped in their nesting boxes but they very frequently poop while on the roost. I went to home depot and picked up some long shallow storage bins which i now keep under the roosts and I try to empty those into my compost about once a week; its amazing how long the coop stays clean if i just do that! I had debated about doing a wire floor, but its not great for the birds feet (look up "bumblefoot"). I think they can also break nails off in the wiring. In terms of what changes I would make: a) After I created this video I had to relocate the water bucket because the chickens got too tall to use it. If the coop had been 2 or 3 inches higher off the ground it woulda worked out okay. b) Also, I am 6'5", and I wish the run were at least that tall. It makes for some back breaking work to walk around in there as it is now. c) I know many people say ya don't need to heat a coop, but this one is very big for the number of birds that I have so their body heat alone is not able to keep it humanely warm on these cold nights. (I'd add more chickens but the run is the right size for this number of birds). All that to say, I wish I had done one of two things...insulated the coop with some foam or designed it so that I could put a temporary winter wall in the inside (reducing the size of their sleeping area and making it easier for them to keep it warmer with their body heat alone). Did that make any sense??

Yep makes perfect sense. And you've given me some more great ideas. I really appreciate the follow up. I now have all the notes, and this spring when I'm building my own coop, your notes will come in handy! I'll probably add the pix to my FB page. Will let you know. Thanks again!

All great ideas for enhancing the chicken's experience. Maybe you can show the modified coop.....or maybe you already have.

Not bad, I modeled my coop after Carolina Coops design. I put a solar powered camp light in my coop. ($10 on Amazon) You'll probably want to put hardwood mulch down, it will keep the ground in there dry. Plus when it breaks down you can shovel and sift it through hardware cloth for the best garden compost.

E Fleming Great! I didn't do feeder but did add some watering auto fill water cups. I like having the interaction with them. I give them a scoop of scratch in the am, and have three that like to peck dried mealworms from my palm. While they mess with the scratch, I fill their feeder. Nesting box access from outside is great, I built a ramp for them and have a cable to raise and lower their door to keep them safe at night.
