I just received my mini flex cordless, love it with the 3” pad, have my ibrid for 1/2”, and now looking at the flex DA for 5”. I’ve been using a duetto with kamikaze bp for 5” as i find it less fatiguing on side panels vs the long arm machines, but I think you sold me with the idea to put the 2.5A battery on the flex when doing side panels to take the weight out, very clever

Top Notch as always mate! i live in an apartment on the second floor and had been struggling with buying a power generator. A good one is heavy, bulky, and they generate a lot of noise and attention. This was the solution I was looking for! Even if the manager says I can't use them it would be easy to transport off the property and do my work under a tree. Just bought one, you weren't kidding about the price, but my back will thank me later since doing a glaze and sealant by hand is a killer with avg. results and waste of product. Thank you!

I'm in the exact same situation. My elbows and hands were crying from hand polishing and hand waxing, so I had to find something cordless that a semi-pro/pro detailer wouldn't toss in the trash can after using it once. Another cordless polisher I'd like to see a review on is the Makita DPO600Z. It looks pretty good - has both free and forced rotation, HOWEVER, strangely, it is only a 5.5mm throw, which seems very small by today's standards. Having said that, I've been able to remove light swirls with an old Bosch RO sander that only has a 5mm throw.

Holy shit those things sound like something out of a Sci-fi movie....weeeeyuuuu might just have to purchase one for that! Its a hell of an expense but at least it will be a rock solid machine. As you say, its the batteries, depending on how and how often your using it, you could be spending 100 quid or so per year or two just to maintain it. Now making it corded, something like the Rupes Nano, that would be brilliant (so long as the contacts on the inside of the machine stay good...ahem) Excellent review as per my friend!

If they come out with the capability to make it corded also like the Rupes Nano this would be a much more appealing tool. I would consider buying it if it had a corded option, not sure if I would have purchased the Rupes Nano if it didn't have a corded option even though I find I don't use it much because the batteries charge so quickly. Solid video as always!

@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 5 жыл бұрын
Id like to george, the cordless was definetly smoother less vibration.. but I didnt noticed any overheating problems when i had the original wave or th first iteration corded version. I was really interested to know if the corded had been tweaked to match the cordless. as well as the counter weight change, im sure there were some subtle design changes with the shroud border, it looks more rubber like on the new tool but also perhaps the distance from the border to the place might be like a tiny bit wider..

Hi Jon great review on these two. they look nice but the battery life aint too crash hot. I think the Flex rotary starting rpm is too high. I'd like to see one at 350 - 1300 rpm from a cordless version. Somewhat like my Fein WPO 14-15 XE which is 200 - 1500 rpm
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 5 жыл бұрын
I would would have like to have seen a lower starting RPM as well matt. the fact both tools had compressed speed ranges makes me think theres almost certainly a technical restraint.
@matthewgibb2640
@matthewgibb2640 5 жыл бұрын
yeah. Have you seen the Fein before, it's a bloody good tool. discontinued now but at 350 and 500 rpm it's wicked. PS I am now focusing on the next generation of polishing machines and have a manufacturer working on it. He's pulling apart a machine (not a polisher) that has the next leap forward in technology for polishers contained in it and seeing if he can modify the tech and make it fit a machine polisher. it's one of at least four designs I have. I'll keep you in the loop but if it eventuates, it will make everyone stand up and take notice globally in the industry and give Rupes a reason to go back to the drawing board. Corded and cordless combo should be the go with every cordless machine unless there is some reason why it can't work.
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 5 жыл бұрын
reg uses the Fein.. its a proper workhorse.. but he uses an old machine that is run 12 hours a day 200-300 days a year.. big old heavy thing but its a old model but its taken some serious abuse and it will go on and on and on. they were experimenting with cheap rotaries and they would die after 2-3 weeks of continous use. id love to stay in the loop with your polisher project Matt sounds very interesting.
@matthewgibb2640
@matthewgibb2640 5 жыл бұрын
That's cool at least someone does. I love the four push pads rather than the trigger and trigger lock system. yeah the old workhorses do well, these cheap pieces of crap rotaries have no torque and they bog down if you put pressure on them - garbage. Your one of a few who will be notified how this project goes.

@janottink3321 4 жыл бұрын
@@ForensicDetailing That's what I thought as well, but since I rarely use my machines at maximum speed, even for compounding, I wondered what the difference would be in practical terms. The combination cordless XFE and PXE seems like a great combo.
@janottink3321
@janottink3321 4 жыл бұрын
To get back to this: I got the PXE and the cordless XFE and they are both great. I used them only once on a VW, but it seems like the de XFE does not lack power for heavy compounding. Runs so smooth it feels like nothing happens, but the results are there. Thanks for all the reviews you do!
@dzhang58
@dzhang58 3 жыл бұрын
I have both, the flex xfe cuts well in when battery is full. But after 10 minutes of full speed which is what you need for cutting, the rpm will drop significantly. So if you are cutting i fins that you need to swap batteries after about half battery. For finishing it is sufficient to go through entire battery.

One thing you didn't talked about is how much easyer it was to use without the powercord. I mean not rubbing the cord to the paint and not thinking how to avoid it.
@berczigabor
@berczigabor 5 жыл бұрын
On the flip side, the power cord sometimes also helps with stabilizing the machine - especially if it's a large throw DA, and you're forced to hold it with just one hand, because you've to reach so far inwards on the hood or on the roof. You don't have that advantage with a cordless version, and I'd also argue that you possible can't even reach that far in with these machines, as they should be more sensitive - in regards to balance - to where you're actually grabbing/holding onto them.

Could they perform as efficient as corded tools? Since that cordless tools usually got less powerful motor than corded ones(100w vs 1000w).
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 5 жыл бұрын
efficient probably is not the right word. at around 22:30 in the video I talked about this but in short the corded tool have wider speed ranges and you cant really slow the corded tools. There are some compramises with "grunt" I think with these cordless versions but they still have plenty of capability.
@zhenli7980
@zhenli7980 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Then do you recommend pairing these cordless tools with more aggressive pad or compound to get as same result as done by corded tools when compounding?
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 5 жыл бұрын
no mate. I would use them exactly the same. specially the XFE. sometimes with the rotary cordless you might miss the high speed of the corded version and if your tilting and using pressure you will notice a bit of slow down. but you wouldnt need to change pad or abrasive combos to try and work around it imo.

Regarding the rotary slowing down under load: If it is assumed that the same tacho drive servo system is used on these cordless polishers as is used in the corded Flex polishers, then I think what is happening is that the cordless rotary, through the tacho servo system, starts to demand more current as pressure increases. In the corded unit. There is (almost) an unlimited amount of power available from the wall socket (mains in UK). In the cordless unit, there will be a limit to how much/how fast the battery will be allowed to deliver power (to maximize battery life, prevent overheating of the battery pack, etc.). When enough pressure is applied to the cordless rotary polisher, it will maintain speed until the pressure (i.e. =increased current demand) causes the battery delivery limit to be reached, and it will then slow down. The tacho servo system may try to demand more power, but the battery power delivery limit will not allow that much power to be drawn from the battery pack. This is a slightly weird pair of polishers. In terms of physical size, they are full sized polishers, and while there is some convenience to not having a power cord, most professionals (which I believe is the target for these polishers) are quite used to having, and managing a power cable. On the other hand, very tight areas are not where these polishers would be used, du to their size )possible exception would be the cordless rotary with extension bars and a small pad). Seems to me that a better cordless polisher would have been the PE8-4, and a small pad version of the XFE7-12. The PE8, and the XFE7-12 small pad version, are ideal for getting into tight spots, and would benefit more by being cordless (sort of supersized Rupes iBrids).
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 5 жыл бұрын
id love cordless versions of the 2 tools you mention. not sure if we will see that though.. regarding cordless taco.. I could not feel the taco altering the speed at all. And the fact its not listed in the specs made me think it simply does not have one. not sure
@kostaskritsilas2681
@kostaskritsilas2681 5 жыл бұрын
Just an assumption on my part regarding the tacho drive. If it isn't present, then its absence could explain the speed variation with pressure all by itself. Cordless small polishers make more sense to me. To be practical, they would need to use the small battery, or design one that fits in the handle, like the Rupes iBrid. Current draw would be lower, so there would be less of a need for the bigger battery.
@gregsullivan7408
@gregsullivan7408 4 жыл бұрын
@@ForensicDetailing At this level, I'd be extremely surprised if it didn't have some degree of speed regulation. The Milkwaukee definitely does (and has a wider speed range). Note that the Flex does menton high torque at low rpm - this does suggest to me that it has speed regulation. If it does, then Kostas' suggestion that it may simply be hitting the maximum power delivery limit of the battery could be correct. If I were going to buy now, I think the Milwaukee seems superior to me, and of course they have a huge range of other tools that could be used with the same battery system. Actually their mini rotary polisher looks pretty good on paper too - goes all the way up to about 8000rpm - this is what we need for small pad sizes. I don't think this one is speed regulated though. Shame it uses the 12V battery - arrrghhh. 🤣

14:42 Couldn't be the unexpected difference because when you ran the machines freely, without touching the surface, the rotary did keep rotating just as it would in real world situations (ie. when it's in contact with the paint), whereas the DA was just vibrating, without actually (or just barely) turning the plate, which in turn required less energy?
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 5 жыл бұрын
with regards to no load testing With the DA I think its less about plate spin. both tools are turning an axel with gearing. So the speeds they rotate the axel are not consistent if you were using the same numbers.. so that will be the main factor. but also the load on the XFE when testing no load run times, will be higher.. the XFE has to rotate the weight off the offset plate and the counterbalance.. the rotary just has to rotate a centre'd plate. at least I think gabor but im just brain dumping
@dejedejsson

Da is free spinning so I dont think it matters. what I would like to know is the battery capacity for work, not when you only run the machine in the air, quite pointless.

@berczigabor 5 жыл бұрын
Well, according to the laws of physics (especially the conservation of momentum) the weights are only important while accelerating - so only in the first few seconds, if the you keep the things continuously running until the battery is empty. But once they've reached their respective "terminal" velocity (the maximum/designated rotational speed for the actual speed setting), it's only the loss in momentum due to the mechanical friction (of the drive gear and of the motor) and the loss of energy due to air resistance (of the motor and of the plate) that has to be compensated for to keep the plate speed constant. However, the total weight of the spun parts per se should not be influencing anymore the amount of energy needed to keep them spinning. Now, a counterweight has obviously far less air resistance than the backing plate has, because overall it has a smaller surface. Actually, the backing plate's surface is even huger than it seems, at least compared to the counterweight, because of all the hook and loop bits, which all individually add to the total surface, with more than it seems at the first glance. So, when considering the amount of energy needed to keep device spinning at a constant speed, it's far more important that at what speed the backing plate is rotating, than at what speed the counterweight is rotating; and the latter's weight (or the weight of the backing plate, or that of the drive gear) doesn't matter at all at this point. Also, air resistance is squarely proportional to velocity, and the rotary spins faster, at higher RPMs, than does the DA. So, even if the latter's backing plate is actually spinning and not just mostly vibrating around, even then the rotary should use a lot more energy to keep the backing plate at a constant speed, than would the DA. I think this is the explanation why the DA kept running longer. Would be interesting to see how they perform under actual load. My guess is that the DAs advanced would vanish, or even turn into the opposite, for the same amount of correction or work done. Of course it would be virtually impossible to measure the latter objectively without high-end technical equipment. Also, if the two models - for whatever reason - are using different motors, with possibly different efficiencies, that could also influence the results, as could differences in ventilation (higher temperatures increase resistance in electrical components and in turn waste heat) - especially if you keep the machines running for such extended periods of time. However, a subjective comparison (under real world use conditions) could be still useful, because after a while one should be able to develop a "feel" for which lasts longer or provides more amount of total correction, regardless of not actually measuring that objectively.

Are you sure you need to half the listed OPM to get the real OPM? I believe Flex list RPM as half of the OPM speed. RPM meaning the rotation of the pad as it oscilates, I believe? Not sure though.
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 3 жыл бұрын
Im really not sure either, I wish there were standards that the manufacturers had to stick to so we would actually as consumers be able to compare like for like. One of my viewers told me that I needed to half the listed OPM rates from flex to get the real OPM. but I dont know.

One initial criticism (of Flex and their fellow manufacturers) stop all the crazy naming. Why not just call them Flex 1,2,3,4,5 etc . Hopefully anyone shopping for a new machine is going to do their research and know what they want it to do and the specs of each machine. All of the numbers and hyphens just serve to confuse in my opinion. But the machines look the nuts tho! But as others have said they need the flexibility of the Rupes iBrid and an additional mains adapter.

Nice review love all your videos but new technology price for old technology idea. Cordless tools have been round for a long time. I just don’t think it’s worth the extra £300 just to go cordless. No good for doing full paint correction if your a mobile detailer unless you either got a geni or mains electric or loads of batteries. Good idea of having a corded plush in option.

What a good review on 2 good polishers. Price i imagine will be the biggest barrier, i understand what you were saying about having a power supplied permanently. But then why buy a cordless over the corded. I imagine they are aimed at people like yourself who use them regularly.
@berczigabor
@berczigabor 5 жыл бұрын
The only benefit I could see would be that in the absence of a power cord you were less likely (well, actually unable) to scratch the paint with the latter, and the elimination other small nuisances related to cable-management (like the inability to trip over the cable). However, I could never justify the price difference (which is around 100%) between the cordless and corded option with that. Actually, the price difference in the long run could be even heftier than that, because while batteries do degrade after a time and need to be replaced, power cords usually never need to be replaced during the lifetime of the main unit.
@davidbee8178
@davidbee8178 5 жыл бұрын
Gábor Bérczi I completely agree - it would be nice not to have to worry about tripping over power cables and wearing them. But I think that's where the advantage ends as you will need a plug in mains power source to recharge your batteries anyway! I think these Flex tools would be good if you needed to detail a car outside without the need for a very long power cable (which a LOT of people would get wrong through use of a too small a gauge of wire anyway) The other POTENTIAL inconvenience MIGHT be if the battery gets in the way of easy manipulation of the tool - this needs to be determined BEFORE you invest a TON of money ! : ) Happy detailing!

That would make them £100ish you must be having a laugh, flex are one of the top names in power tools they are not some cheap far eastern diy tool you pick up at b+q, think about it -around £95 per 5ah battery, 2 x in the kit, probably £50 charger (these are about right £ in high end power tools, makita, dewalt etc) £250-300 polisher -that's what flex cost anyway, and packed in a l-box, these are around £50. Even for the cheapest diy make, I would expect to pay at least £200 for an 18v angle grinder style polisher kit in a cardboard box, those cone style polishers are only practical for waxing, and you can't compare battery tools to corded tools on price, even cheap batteries are expensive.
