Great job mate well done !! When your finished honing I used to wrap the hone head in the rag I wiped the cylinders out with and then put it in a plastic bag so it doesn't get dirt and dust all over it and to help keep the ball sort of moist !! I never liked those ball honers….. long story but I used to use flat stone slow rpm as possible and in and out as fast as possible…. The flat stone will show up any high or low spots and you can spot a wavy bore……

Iv had success with the 3 stone hone with quick strokes+ honing oil, beautiful looking block

I’ve got 4” bore 180, 240, and 320 flex hones plus a 400 grit plateau honing brush. Read somewhere the moly rings like the sharp peaks taken off with the fine grit brush. Not sure if it really matters though. Maybe with the new age thin and lighter tension rings??? Good work, love your vids.

The flex hone !! Winna chicken dinna!! Great product I've had both types, so I have used the spring hone first and the flex after that for great results in the past. Have fixed quite a few blocks . Yes mate," diy" is the only way you can call cars a "hobby":-) :-) :-) also try some "dye penetrant testing" on the piston to find any cracks around the ring land's. The kit doesn't cost much from your welding shop. It's called dye chek and can be used on your crank rods ,crankshaft, piston and all driveline components. Peace of mind for cheap. We use it in welding inspection to detect micro defects in the surface. For instance the proper sealing of a tank or high pressure piping welds. :-) :-) it may help with your peace of mind and catch out any gremlins before assembly . I did this with the ole 253 last time and she's getting a flogging every Friday night from the new owners LOL :-) :-) they love the wagon :-) :-) but I wish I still had her gulp.....

Good idea,from what I can see there is no cracking around ring lands, just a slightly larger oil hole in oil rings, but I will try the dye. It's not nice regretting what you sold, I sold a lovely old hq ute he wrote it off two weeks later.. cheers Jezz

I have gotten a freshly bored 4.030 308 block after having 4 blocks fail inspection to build my 355, have had it at work getting handled all tye time in order to do the oil mods etc and in the process of getting handled and being left in the workshop, 2 bores have had some very light surface rust appear from where fingers or something had touched...They came off pretty easy with a quick scothbrite rub but id like the ability ro give the bores a quick hone to ckean em right up in case anything else pops up..I have coated the bores liberally with grease for the time being to hooefully avoid any further marks. Just that with the bores at 4.030 exactly and my pistons at 4.0267 to 4.0270 i have between 3 and 3.3 thou clearance already (Wiseco Forged pistons) and dont really want much more if i can help it.

Did you install file back rings in the previous build and do you intend to use them again?? I would be rechecking my ring gaps and Especially piston to bore clearance after doing that. Don't forget to check bore ovality and taper.

Beautiful result! You got the hang of it real quick. Handy tool to keep in the shed anyway. I'm similar with wanting to DIY everything. I took the Volvo to get corner-weighted the other week as I'm in the process of building some coil-over suspension on the front and adjustable ride height on rear, so wanted accurate numbers. It makes me feel sick or squeamish having to take it somewhere and have someone else do work on it! Lol! Sad but true.

This might be a silly question, but if you have a 60 thou over block, can you still give it a good hone without worrying about taking too much material off?

If your bores are looking really worn, its a waste of time. But if there not looking to bad, most certainly a light hone is an affordable way along with a fresh set of rings, you can see a bit more life out of that engine👍

@@griffsrearmountturbothemod1623 Thanks, the bores look okay and seem pretty straight they're just really glazed. As you know finding a 308 block with any meat left on the bone in 2023 is easier said than done.

Cant stress the importance of cleaning the honing grit out of the block. I imagine the cam bearing are still in it? Try and flush cleaning fluid through the oil feed hole. In between the rear cam bearing and cam plug is a good spot for grit to accumulate. Punch out the plug if you like ill post you one. Can you send me the details of the piston. Part number, anything.

I hear you loud and clear George on block cleanliness, the more I work on engines the fussier I get, that's a good thing.. the part no for piston 139628, 030 over size.. I do feel confident on using this still, don't stress over try to get it... Thanks George I really appreciate your offers👍

If you put that piston back in you are out of your mind , you would just be building a HANDGRENADE. Save your time and money and replace that piston.
