DON'T DO IT. Siding must be lapped to keep bugs and water out. This is a fine effort totally wasted. It should be Aluminum. Vinyl in cooler climates.

oh no, you didn't get every side, and it's not overlapping, water will bead into and behind the siding and it'll start to rot, I'm all for diy blah blah blah but like, maybe just consult someone who does this professionally for like 5-10 minutes and they'll usually steer you away from massive mistakes

Exactly what I was thinking. That's going to leak like crazy. They should have at least used tongue and groove board if anything. I'm a huge advocate of DIY, but you have to research how the thing you're attempting works. They should have "watched a few KZbin videos" about common sense. Lol.

I've never seen a detailed description of the process, best practices etc. I wonder how factors like the depth of charing, and oiling which some do affect this "80 year" lifespan estimate. I would think a light char which is what you have done, would preserve the wood from the elements less than a deeper char. You must report back in 80 years with the result.
@matthewkentdavila

David Ayre the shou sugi ban i saw done in Japan was charred much deeper than this.
@sebastiantevel898
@sebastiantevel898 2 жыл бұрын
Does not look like they charred all sides of the plank. If that it is the case the portions that are not charred will began to fail as any wood would do when exposed to the elements and they can forget the 80 years free of maintenance lifespan of this wood.

If that is cedar (it appears to be) it is naturally resistant to rotting. Not 100% rot proof but close. When you use this tecnique I would it assume it burns off most of the "fuzziness" of the wood. Less fuzz=less places for dirt to get trapped and water to hang out. And it looks nice.

beautiful look--I'm curious if there will be vertical streaks from oxidation of all those exposed nails, especially considering the weather, and if shou sugi ban exacerbates that problem by virtue of it not getting painted/coated, or even forming corrosive compounds

1.presumably stainless steel nails. 2. ventilated facade will allow water ingress to dry off.3. a bevel cut along top and bottom edges, would prevent water sitting on top edge. 4. @bpaullus 6 жыл бұрын
If it is done properly 80 years is the expected life of the material. Here is one good source of info deltamillworks.com/shou-sugi-ban. Here the product was not prepared properly. The typical wood used is generally Cypress, Cedar, or Redwood however, other woods can be used. All 6 sides (including the ends) should be burnt. Then the boards should be scrubbed with a metal or very stiff nylon brush or it can be power brushed. Next, it should be cleaned/washed to remove all the loose material and dust. Lastly, it should be sealed with a clear coat or oil. Again it is generally expected to last 80 years or more done properly. I'm all for DIY but I feel a little more than watching a few KZbin videos is sufficient. Conversations such as these should be had...at the very least ask some questions. All in all they did a decent job but I seriously doubt they will get anything near what they are expecting. Raw egde wood doesnt like the weather all that much especially in the climate they are in.

Shou sugi ban is the best. However, stopping at the concrete walls, a super durable wall surface, or even at a stucco skimmed onto the concrete, would have been the environmentally conscious finish to the building. These builders were so fascinated by their char that they added superfluous work, expense and carbon debt. Nevertheless, shou sugi ban is superiour and maybe I'm wrong.

I will admit, the Sugi Pine/Jap Cedar (I assume that's what type of wood this is) is VERY beautiful and the charring process definitely seems to enhance the unique patterns that wood is famous for. However, and please correct/educate me if I'm wrong here, I would have to be quite concerned about the flammability of such a structure... especially if that structure was one in which I planned to live. What prevents it from taking a spark like regular char wood or char cloth firestarters?
@Thoracius
@Thoracius 4 жыл бұрын
Apparently shou sugi ban actually makes the wood more fire resistant, because you've already burned off the flammable carbohydrates from the surface of the wood. Google is your friend.

@benjaminhawkins1129
@benjaminhawkins1129 9 жыл бұрын
Deejay Kollar I concur Deejay. There is a lot more to this technique than they showed here, and if they left those essential points out, their house is going to have a major issue or 10 in just a few years of weather. For one, it wasn't tongue in groove, which helps seal out the weather. For two they didn't focus on how important it still is to SEAL the wood. It's mission critical. The less char on that wood, the more important it is. Even when you go balls out and the wood looks like a cracked blackend desert floor you STILL have to seal the wood at the very least with as you mention, Tung oil. Light chars can give you opportunity to use other types of stain to really bring out grain and contrast... and SEAL the wood. I'll be doing a project like this for a few of my interior walls to contrast the brick walls, so my char will be lighter in most rooms. I'm still going to seal the wood.

Natural can imply having little or no processing and containing no chemical additives which is what is used to weather treat wood in the 21st century. Think natural foods you would buy from the store. The propane is used to make the fire. Believe it or not, you can actually make fire without propane or gasoline, i know, why would you want to. This is 100% a natural method of weather treating wood. The person below is probably a better example of a Troglodyte than the people in this video, how do I know, because they're sitting around watching videos of Shou Sugi Ban.
