Do you use lighting in your macro or do you use natural light only?

Well, I am not professional photographer, I am all over the place. I recently bought a ring flash which I use with my Nikon d810 and 105 mm macro lens. I will share some of my pictures with you

I use various external lights for mushroom photography. After watching your video, I ordered two Pod Minis and 2 Lighting Arms (Versatile and Cool white) with Diffusers Level 1 from Adaptalux. They arrived in Germany a week later and I tested them straight away last weekend. I am always looking for progress and this light is very flexible and interesting.

I have been using the Adaptalux lights for a couple weeks now and I really like them! Lot’s of “flexibility” (pun intended!) The lights have various ways to diffuse the light and the amount of light generated is adjustable with the app or on the controller. Works a LOT better than flash!!

Lovely images, already looking at a macro lens and lighting set up. I wonder if macro offers me a way of shooting nature when the weather is poor for my normal landscapes. The additional lighting and colours you use I like very much, adding items I have no issue with.

My own rule is that I can clear the area around my subject, but I can not add anything that was not there to begin with, not even in the background. I can use light to highlight my subject or background. I do not do photo stacking. But I really like your work ✌️

Really like your method more than macro specific shooters that use an Olympus OM having it set up with macro lens, flash, and big hood diffuser. Your way I can be shooting whatever I want with any camera that I want that has focus bracketing that doesn't also have to have the function of firing a flash very fast like the Olympus. When I see something interesting for macro, just swap lenses and set up tripod, lighting, and scene. And I like how it looks better than flash. Now, for things that can move that I want to shoot like dragonflies, bees, ladybugs, and lizards. I can't use focus bracketing or set up lights. So do I just do a single shot or burst shot with a flash or no flash? Thanks.

Quality vid and tutorial, Daniel. Side by side frames work well. Pic in pic would work better, IMO, if you were not facing outside of the frame - upper right corner would have been fine. Thought you were going to elaborate on the flexible lighting you mentioned at the start of the vid. Thought the flex light system was your “innovative lighting” - capable and versatile fiber optic light system, but pricey and perhaps cost might be a deal-breaker for viewers who are not as invested in macro. Second image w/blurred background works best, IMO. No problem using or own elements to build an image, as long as we don’t imply otherwise. BTW, there’s a YT host/channel that has a name remarkably similar to yours - “Daniel Ockeloen” who covers photo tech. Any relation?😊

Bonjour Daniel. J'espère que tu lis le français car je suis très mauvais en anglais/américain. Tout d'abord, merci et bravo pour ton travail. Tu es très inspirant pour moi ! Concernant l'un des sujets que tu soulèves, selon moi, tu es l'architecte de ton image. Tu la construits au gré de ta sensibilité, du message que tu souhaites faire passer et tu écris ce message avec la lumière, le cadrage, la mise en scène. Donc, personnellement je ne suis pas du tout gêné de te voir construire ta photo. En effet, tel un photographe de studio, tu gères tes éclairages, en ajoute ici, en enlève là, ... rien que de très banal en fait pour un photographe pro. Parce que tu fais de la photo nature, il faudrait que tu ne touches à rien et que tu shoot en lumière naturelle uniquement ? Si certains photographes ont cette philosophie, grand bien leur fasse, je les respecte pour leurs opinions. Mais pour ma part, je ne souhaite pas enfermer mon pouvoir créatif par ce type de contraintes qui n'ont que peu d'influence sur l'environnement. Bien entendu (et je pense qu'il en est de même pour toi), ma limite d'intervention arrive lorsque je dois détériorer l'environnement (arracher, casser, déterrer un végétal, ...) pour favoriser un cadrage, Sinon, en 3:00, je préfère la photo à f/11. Encore une fois, un grand merci pour ton travail ! J'attends tes posts avec impatience tellement la qualité de tes interventions me font voyager et alimentent ma pratique :)

Fwiw, the first image of the goblet shaped “mushroom” looked like it might be what is called a “golf tee lichen” so not maybe not actually a mushroom. The Lilliputian world of the forest floor is fun to photograph. Bring a knee pad!

Do you think bunch of Lume Cubes are better than those cables with LED lights? You haven't used it to that time (I mean.. you could live without that), so it's more like a gimmick (?), but not in the wrong way? I don't think it will be yours first way to color the background / lighten your object.

I love working with different lighting equipment since they all have their own advantages. What’s fun about the flexible ones is that you can get a little more precise when working with tiny subjects. It’s only a matter of personal choices. Photography is a technical process. However, Image taking can be “documentary” where nothing is manipulated, or “art” where the picture imparts emotion but does not pretend to be factual. Like a still life subject in an art class. Each has its purpose. Documentary purists should note, however, that even a “factual” image can lie, based on what is left out of a photo, like the two faces of Mumbai, with a city scape in one direction and sprawling slums if you turn around. Just as long as you’re up-front with what the image represents, both forms of image taking are legitimate.

Just a small piece of criticism and some feedback for you. You stated “Let me demonstrate how I go about blending the image together” and then state that you aren’t familiar with the software. That means, you aren’t demonstrating how you typically blend the images together, you are only doing it this way because of the sponsor read. This tells me the viewer that you use something else typically to blend the images together, which means you dont deem Luminar good enough to use unless it is a sponsor. Still a good video, just one thing that kind of stuck out to me.

Thank you for your feedback. Typically, I use Photoshop to blend images by opening them as layers and using the align feature, followed by the auto blend for a seamless result. However, I find the focus stacking feature in Luminar to be more seamless, which is why I highlighted it in the video. Despite the sponsorship, I believe Luminar provides quick and exceptional results, especially for photographers seeking efficient editing solutions. I will stick to using Lightroom for other features since I am more familiar with it. I hope this explanation clears things up for you, and I appreciate your comment.😉✌️

If fashion model and celebrity photos can be retouched, fans added to flair their hair, and undergo an hour of makeup and hair dressing to present the right image, there is no reason all photos cannot be enhanced similarly for a creative effect. The key is to be honest about your creativity. I have no issue with your approach to creativity at all. The image is our canvas, light our brushes, and post-production our artistic creativity.

I have to admit that my initial response to seeing you take objects and repositioning them and placing them, essentially manually placing the elements in your scene instead of just photographing what you come across, was negative. My gut feel is that it creates a fake scene, it is not nature that you are photographing but some artificial set that just happens to be constructed from natural objects. Yes definitely my initial reaction was that that is not really what photography is about. Almost the same distinction as a documentary vs a Hollywood movie. Both involve cameras but the one is a pure representation of nature, the other is just fake. But I also think that I might be wrong. Maybe I am missing the point. I.e. what exactly is wrong with creating a scene for a photograph if it results in a pleasing photograph? And your photographs are exceptionally pleasing. And it is not like you take a seed and use scissors to change its shape or anything that extreme at all. You simply position the subject in a pleasing setting. So I am actually not sure how I feel about that. I guess how I feel is; I am fine with someone else doing it, and some of your photos that you create in this way are really striking and beautiful. But I don't think I want to personally walk around in nature with tin foil and 5 lights and build little scenes and photograph them. I think, for me, photography is more about capturing the beauty that is there on its own, or with macro with a simple light source or maybe two to light the subject nicely. In summary, it does feel a little fake, because it is a little fake. But, you are also not physically modifying the objects themselves, you are just positioning them in an appealing way. Back to my movie analogy - there are some profoundly beautiful and inspiring and powerful movies. So I don't have a problem with you doing this, in fact some of your images are spectacular. It is just not something that I feel I want to capture, I'd rather capture natural beauty. I'd rather photograph a beautiful girl in a street photography setting, than capture a beautiful but highly make-up laden supermodel on a catwalk stage. Nothing wrong with the catwalk variety though. To me the pretty girl in the street is just so much more real, and more beautiful, even with the small blemish, that the supermodel has hidden under make-up and so has been 'edited out'. I can appreciate the striking images though, no matter how they were made.
