Crazy but true detail: the MAPPA animators were so unhappy with their working conditions (rightfully so) especially for this episode and because they were forced to sign an NDA and couldn't say anything, they got out their feelings by having one of the office buildings in this episode match their office down to the same amount of desks and chairs and had Sukuna demolish it. The way the subjugation ritual works is The 10 shadows comes with 10 shikigami for the user of the technique to summon. Divine dogs are given by default no subjugation required, however the rest of the shikigami need to be subjugated. So the 10 shadows user has to summon them separately and win against the shikigami in a fight in order to successfully subjugate it. After the ritual is complete they can summon the subjugated shikigami with full control, if you go back to season 1 when megumi pulls out max elephant for the first time he says "i just recently tamed this one", meaning he successfully completed subjugating it on his own. However, the subjugation ritual works differently when an outsider is present. Successfully defeating the shikigami with someone else voids the ritual meaning the 10 shadows user does not gain control over the shikigami from defeating it with someone else in the ritual. Thats why megumi says in this episode even though it makes the ritual useless, it still can have a purpose in certain cases. By summoning makora on haruta, he forcibly dragged haruta into the subjugation ritual, in hopes that makora would kill haruta and himself. Indeed he was sacrificing his life to make it happen. However Sukuna did not want Megumi to die therefore he stepped into the ritual and defeated Makora himself which saved megumi. Because the subjugation ritual was voided in this case by Megumi dragging Haruta in, he is free to summon Makora again in the future to subjugate it if he wants, or pull this suicide move again even if Sukuna defeated it.

Mahoraga’s adaptation technique is so incredible that during that sequence where Sukuna and it were almost dancing with each other, Sukuna was basically throwing “feint” slashes (like how Todo can clap but not use his technique) at Mahoraga to confuse it and make it unable to block or avoid his dismantle technique when he would activate it at random. Mahoraga adapted so that it could tell whether Sukuna was going to use his technique or was doing a feint motion, and that allowed it to move in on Sukuna during a feint and actually land a blow.
@sarmientojosesarmiento87685 ай бұрын
I think it was in the sketches of the chapter, where they say that at that moment Sukuna wanted him to learn to feint, that is, to learn to lie and thus corrupt his "divine" state, that's why Sukuna had that face when Mahoraga feints a kick and then he threw a punch that connected

Note to Flexie: Summoning Mahoraga doesn't, in principle, require self-sacrifice. It works like the other shikigami. The Ten Shadows technique allows you to summon ten shikigami. The two dogs (now there is only one as you know, the other got killed) represent the first shikigami (or you could say "base shikigami" as they are granted to the user, so no need to fight and tame them). The 9 remaining shikigami have to be tamed one by one. You have to summon them and then subjugate them. In other words, you have to defeat them 1v1 and then they recognize you as their master and obey you. So Megumi defeated Nue (the bird) and Max Elephant for example to be able to use them. If you involve allies to defeat the shikigami, then the subjugation ritual is void. Even if you defeat it, it won't obey you. You'll have to summon it again later to tame it alone. It has to be 1 versus 1 fight between the user and shikigami. Makora/Mahoraga is kind of the final boss of the shikigami (he's one of the Twelve Divine Generals in East Asian Buddhism, so a god). The reason he immediately attacked Megumi after being summoned is because Megumi hasn't tamed it yet. That's the only problem here. If Megumi subjugates it, then it will recognize him as his master and obey. Megumi just isn't strong enough to do that yet and thus summoning it amounts to suicide. Summoning a shikigami you haven't tamed can only be to tame it obviously, so you're de facto THE enemy in its eyes and it will attack you. If you involve more people like Megumi just did with Haruta, then they're enemies of the Shikigami as well. No Ten Shadows technique user in history has managed to tame Mahoraga and we can easily see why. His adaptation ability is overpowered. He's ridiculously strong even without it already as we can see but with it, even if you were strong enough to keep up... the longer the fight goes, the greater the disadvantage for you as it just adapts to everything you throw at him, rendering your attacks and your cursed technique itself useless. This is why the only way to win is to have some crazy powerful attack able to oneshot it before it can adapt like Sukuna did, something impossible to (nearly) everyone else.
@cracuss31n522 ай бұрын
Now the problem is taming the guy, there are discussions around on how to kill Mahoraga with only the 9 shadows and the only thing that came to people's mind is using the bull in a treadmill to built up power. Yeah, I think Mahoraga is beyond what a single user of 9S is capable of it takes Sukuna or Gojo to kill him with maybe Yuta, Yuki, and Kenjaku that can kill Mahoraga.

So clarification: I believe Megumi was Dead dead, except for the fact the summoning ritual had his death listed as “Pending” until it was complete. If the summoning ritual had finished (either by Ponytail dying, or in the crazy impossible universe where Ponytail somehow beats Mahoraga), Megumi would be Actually Dead for Real. Sukuna interrupted the ritual as an outsider and “voided” the contract, stabilizing Megumi beforehand with Reverse Cursed Energy. That’s the only reason Megumi is alive at the end of the episode.

There's a lot of little details in that fight between Sukuna and Mahoraga that really showcase how great a job Vincent Chansard did with this episode. He's a French animator and solo animated this episode. When Sukuna says "you've done it now!", he's referring to Mahoraga bringing in cursed energy to the fight. As in Sukuna has to take it seriously. And he really enjoys it. Sukuna laughs like a giddy teenager that Mahoraga can also see his technique. This fight used very concise ways to expand on the type of character Sukuna is. When Sukuna pauses in the fight and makes Mahoraga jump, he's just faking him out to fuck with him. He realizes Raga is adapting to his technique so he switched up his game to mix in fake out slices to throw Raga off. Raga begins punching the air because he can't tell if Sukuna is throwing real slices or not, so he tries to anticipate them. Then when Raha adapts to that, he throws his own fakeout punch at Sukuna and it lands. This is probably the best fight scene I've ever seen in my life.

I don't know why people keep pushing this silly narrative. No, he wasn't going to summon Mahoraga against Todo. He tried to summon it against Sukuna twice (Season 1 Episode 1 and 4), against Hanami (Season 1 Episode 19), against the Cursed Womb before going for Domain Expansion (Season 1 Episode 23) and then against Toji right before the latter asked his name (Season 2 Epsiode 17). Nothing hints to him summoning Mahoraga against a fellow student, regardless of how much of a dick Todo was being. It makes no sense. He didn't make the pose or pronounced the incantation. The look in his eyes merely changed and Todo felt the kid was deep down unhinged lol.

So on the off chance that you read this, here is how the subjugation ritual of the Ten Shadows works. So the technique user starts with the Demon Dogs already subjugated and has to battle each shikigami and defeat it alone in order to use that shikigami. The ritual allows for you to bring others into it so that you may have something of a trial run at understanding what you are up against, but if you defeat the shikigami, you are not able to use them. Only if you defeat them alone can you then call upon them. So every shikigami Megumi has besides the Demon Dogs, he has had to battle. The one other rule is that the ritual only ends when all participating are dead, or the shikigami is. And if an individual dies while the ritual is active, they are kept in a limbo state until the ritual ends with the death of either the other individuals or the shikigami. So Sukuna healing Megumi kept him alive enough to live after the ritual was over. No one in history has ever been able to defeat Mahoraga. All that have summoned him have died. So when Megumi summoned it, he thought it was a confirmed death sentence for him and his opponent.

the best aspect that makes Mahoraga so scary is that he does not stop or give up or get out of breath. Like its not that hes just adapting to attacks and defenses, hes adapting to literally EVERYTHING. And hes not going around or avoiding things, hes bulldozing through it. Hes actively constantly countering everything, and marching towards you. Theres no convincing this beast, no talking, no stopping it unless you know his deal (or are sukuna/gojo), Mahoraga has a single goal, to kill you, and it by the lord he will make sure it happens.

The subs are a little complicated to understand in the heat of battle between Sukuna and mahoraga. The things i would like to point out from what i understand is: 1) Megumi's subjugation ritual has 1 rule, that is megumi who is the user of ten shadow technique has to defeat the shikigami by himself at first in order to summon/control that shikigami. Any intervention or help from outside will count as cheating in the subjugation ritual so it is an failure process. Even if its an failure the summoned shikigami will not go until it dies or all the participants of that ritual dies. Hence that kamikaze megumi use it as an self sacrifice attack to everybody he meets by forcing them to participate in the ritual (ie. By explaining ritual process like in the beginning of episode 17) and making mahoraga to attack and kill all participants (since mahoraga can only be killed by one shot). 2) mahoraga's ability is to adapt anything and everything but he needs time to adapt to an attack. So if you make an attack that is powerfull enough to vaporize mahoraga before he is adapting he can be killed. And i think mahoraga has to be fully vaporized because even if he has some part of flesh remain he can regenerate from that part. A very troublesome foe indeed. sukuna has cleave and slice for cutting things of cursed energy objects and non cursed energy objects respectively. But the results are like same it just cuts the objects. So sukuna thought that mahoraga can adapt to any cuts in general, so after mahoraga fully adapted to his constant cutting. He immediately used flames(fuga) to kill mahoraga before he adapts to that too.

For Sukuna's Technique, it's got 2 Slashes and the Fire The Fire alone deals high Dmg, but is slow, single target, and takes time to charge But with the Domain, the slashes would lace the whole area with explosive Curse Energy, thus basically turning what'd be a Bazooka into a full on Nuke

Some extra lore, during the scene where sukana pump fakes mahorga and maho starts shadow boxing nothing. Thats sukana actaully corrupting mahoraga and teaching a divine general how to lie. Which we see him try later in the fight
@vgautamkrishna51975 ай бұрын
The thing about that ritual is you have to defeat that thing after you summon it to tame it It's so powerful that no one could do it so everyone of them died The ritual can accommodate more than summoner and he took advantage of this rule to kill him because it will attack everyone who participated in that ritual

A lot of the Blu-ray edits were removing the ghosting and dimming of the effects. It premieres on TV in Japan first, and there's been countermeasures to ensure animations are as safe as possible for photo-epileptic people ever since that Porygon episode of Pokemon left thousands in the hospital over seizures.

Regarding some translations in this episode (I don't speak japanese, just sharing some info I found): Makora vs Mahoraga - you'll most likely read people refer to the shikigami online as Mahoraga. The name comes from a race of deities in Buddhist mythology, and "Mahoraga" is the original sanskrit pronunciation. Makora is the japanese reading of the name. At the end of the day, both are correct. Sukuna's techniques - that was already mentioned in some comments, but in the original airing, the translators chose some interesting translations for Sukuna's attacks. His cuts, called Dismantle and Cleave back in season 1, were translated as Fillet and Dissect. "Malevolent Shrine" was changed to "Malevolent Kitchen". The main issue with these translations are the lack of continuity with season 1, and, quite honestly, they don't sound as cool. However, they're not exactly wrong either: Sukuna IS a cannibal, so the culinary motif actually makes sense here. "Mizushi-dokoro" is an archaic term in japanese referring to the place food was prepared in palaces, so it's related to "Shrine" and "Kitchen" both.

27:33 it's actually a pretty fun meme in the JJK community: "Megumi summons Mahoraga at the slightest inconveniecne". Someone cuts him in line at the store? "With this treasure, I summon..."

RIP Flexie. What a freaking episode! I still can't believe that Fushiguro's technique is that strong. I also need the lore on Heavenly Pacts.
@henlo13085 ай бұрын
A Heavenly Pact (aka Heavenly Restriction) is a vow placed on a sorcerer at birth. When a sorcerer has a Heavenly Restriction, they give up physical strength for immense amounts of cursed energy (as for the case of Kokichi Muta, aka Mechamaru) or they lower their cursed energy amount in exchange for physical prowess (as for the case of Maki Zenin). In some cases, a Heavenly Pact completely removes someone of cursed energy and gives them superhuman physical characteristics (as for the unusual case of Toji Fushiguro). A sorcerer cannot choose to have a Heavenly Pact nor can they choose whether to give up strength or cursed energy.

The worst part about what Sukuna does when he is in control is when Yuji takes over again, he retains all of those memories. That's why he reacted the way he did at the end. It wasn't just seeing the aftermath.

To subjugate a Shikigami, you have to beat it during the subjugation ritual, but the creature can be called for subjugation as many times as is required. If you have another sorcerer present, you can't gain control of the Shikigami even if you beat it, but it does make the other sorcerer have to also deal with that Shikigami. The ritual isn't complete unless the Shikigami is beaten, or unless all sorcerers called into the ritual die.
