Most of the listed "deleted" or ideas that did not make it into the movie would have moved the movie away from being about Mei entering adolescence and increasing her independence from her mother. For example having her grandmother die would have unnecessarily darken the movie.

Ok understandable, but godzilla Mei would have made more sense of why her mother was so huge with her having strong emotions of anger and betrayal and being extremely angry towards her mother. It would change the story line but still keep the idea of how Mei has to learn to control the panda but still be able to express it with slightly strong emotions. Stressful yes but it also relates to others where they have to suppress their emotions or else they'll hurt someone they love or someone in general.

Usually I’m disappointed deleted scenes and story changes didn’t end up in the final production but I truly think this movie was perfect just the way it is and didn’t really need any changes. This movie was so different than anything we’ve seen from Pixar before and it so nicely captures a coming of age story that’s not too cliché or too realistic. It’s my favorite movie right now!

i think the movie was perfect as it is. I can see them doing Mei-zilla in a sequel if they ever do it....but instead of rage causing it....its love or something since by the end of the film she learned to control her panda form. they can deal with elements not used that way too (like gang or family...maybe a black sheep of the family is a gang member and uses their panda form for evil)

@@michaelchu9317 not that I know of. but Id love it if they did. disney+ has been doing several series based on pixar films (mainly shorts but still). If they do a sequel. Id love to see Mei go Kaiju but not from anger. bring in cousin element and they are on a rampage and only mei can stop them and her friends or family are in danger....so goes kaiju from love. Id love to even just see a series of shorts with the characters in the world (like pixar popcorn shorts)....or maybe even a series like Dug Days (a regular cartoon)

As a Chinese I would like to say that this movie is fabulous. The Chinese elements in it are perfect. They even made a cantonese version, which is well matched with the film’s background. Also shows a multicultural Toronto and the life of Chinese immigrant family combined tradition culture with modern elements. Well done, Pixar.

In my opinion, I think there should of been native Canadian elements in a Toronto centered animated movie be natural then chinese elements, since chinese are not native born in Canada, since from china actually, you see Penny was created by a guy who did movies took place in Australia and maybe in Sidney in the 80s in The Rescuers Down Under and Jenny a New York girl in Oliver & Company, neither are chinese too so there'd should be like that for a Canadian character, but I felt it was missing Toronto in a traditional animated movie, I started thinking for a while now on why the Disney animator directors in the 80s or 90s did not done a movie in Toronto like New York City in Oliver or Sidney in Rescuers Down Under, but I'm not Indigenous nor chinese, but I started to think why not an animator director guy did a native Canadian girl that dreams of becoming a red fox instead and then Foxzilla be in the Toronto centered movie the Canadian Godzilla Kong Canadian element thing naturally very Canadian, because foxes are in Canada not red pandas, eh?

@@Kawayoporu Cuz the director is a Chinese Canadian who is familiar with Chinese cultures and maybe also wants to show more about them to the viewers. Also, The Lis live in the Chinatown. Actually, there are many scenes in the film truly existing in Toronto. I’m not Canadian, but as far as I know, more than 5% of population of Canada is of Chinese origin and there’s a Chinatown almost in every big city of Canada. As prime minister Justin Trudeau said “ Diversity is our strength”. Maybe film makers want to highlight the multiculture but neglect to add more native cultural elements（I’m not sure). And there are over 50 nations, which all bring their own cultures, living on this continent nowadays. It’s quite difficult to define what is native and what not. In my opinion, they made Canada more colorful and more open.

Honestly hearing all the alternates and the possibilities makes me glad we got THIS VERSION. The story is more focused and honest about girls becoming women both in an idealistic and literal way. The other versions i feel mask the central theme or downright ignore it and rely too heavily on past tropes.

It's very possible that the change of name from Fei to Mei could have been to further show how precious Meilin was to her family and this idea that she was still very young to be experiencing these things (her Mum mentions she thought she would have more time before the panda appeared, her Aunties say she is "just a child"). In Chinese, Mei Mei means "little sister", but it can be an affectionate nickname for the youngest girl in the family.

I just found out that "Fei Shi" can mean "troublesome" in Chinese, but "Meilin" means "beautiful rose". So maybe the producers felt the perfectionist Ming would've wanted a less problematic name for her daughter?

A little headcanon for a deleted scene of mine is the four main characters sneaking off to see 'Spider-Man' (which was released globally on May 3, 2002 during the movie's timeframe) as part of the montage. I think Mir and Abby would have been the ones most insistent on seeing it.

If Pixar added that subplot with ming using Mei's panda form to make money, then the kaiju mother-daughter fight would have made a lot of sense. But Pixar still made another masterpiece regardless of which ending we got.

I think the cousin angle might work out as a potential story line in a sequel, but differently not for this story. The movie title, I think that simplicity is much better than puns or overly complicated names. I don't think that's necessary. It isn't realistic to life, for one. Two, people are multiple things at once, and introducing that fact at a younger age would probably help them not become rigid in their thinking as they grow older. Lack of acknowledgment of the grey area that life tends to be (rather than black or white) is something many adults struggle with. Besides that, the current trend of film antagonists being familial conflict, trauma, negative emotions, etc., is a lot more widely relatable. Real-life is plenty scary and full of things that can be mined for story without going back to "straightforward villains", that kind of storytelling had its time, a lot of it. It's only been a decade or so of this present style.

I'm very glad that they didn't include the spanking part. That's considered (rightly so, considering the plethora of research on the topic) as straight up physical abuse and is illegal in many countries. I'll never forget my partner being horrified at the prospect and him telling me the most hands on aggression his father ever showed him was grabbing his arm when he was trying to eat a poisonous berry. Meanwhile my mother hit me with a wooden spoon. People take spanking way too lightly because it's common (in some countries, America and UK being obvious ones), but it's just abuse, so I'm really glad that they didn't include that because it would of been harder to relate and understand to Mei's mom Ming. Glad to see many others thought the way I did! Or at least a lot more than I would of suspected. Means we're learning as a society!

and getting tail swiped is so much better. ;D but the spanking isnt supposed to be a hard hit its more of symbolic "dont do this because consequences are worse" but often times people dont know the difference and actually hit hard or do it over nothing serious which diminishes the symbolic nature of it into becoming meaningless. and if that happens, it may causes the opposite effect. secondly, it could have worked fine given its set over 20 years ago. not current day. however, in the end it would have had a contradictory message given the giant panda going on a rampage over a thematic decision. and encouraging actions outside the reasons for them is ill advised.

Incidentally, that original concept of Mei having fire fur in her Red panda form actually served as inspiration for me when I was building Mei Lee as a Dungeons and Dragons character. You see whenever I play Dungeons and Dragons, I always play Mei Lee from Turning Red (usually whenever I play her, she ends up in the RPG "world" after getting distracted, straying away, and getting lost while hiking with her friends in a park outside Toronto). I decided to make her a Druid since that seems to be the best class for a character that can transform into an animal. One of the spells I ended up giving her was the Cantrip "Produce Flame". The idea to give her that Cantrip is actually based on the original "fire fur" design concept for Mei Lee's Red Panda. Also, another word for red panda is "Firefox" (yes the "fox" on the Mozilla Firefox logo is actually a Red Panda).

1-Is it really that complicated to correlate the size of the panda is equal to her emotional stress? Most people came to that conclusion as to why Ming was that big regardless of that scrapped aspect. I'd sooner thing it was for animation reasons. 2-Personally if they took out the supposed spanking scene the kaiju fight would have been interesting if they just made it Mei and her mom arguing. In what we got you tell me their dialogue wasn't a typical mother daughter argue just with mystical red panda transformations. 3-i think they'll save the cousin and extended family when they wanna churn out a sequel or maybe a series. 4-Immkind of glad they took out the supposed yakuza marriage. I know they probably just rented Mei and her panda but it would call into question their families connections (Just look at Ming and try not to think Crime bosses wife or daughter)

If they added the spanking scene there would be a similar rage like the one in demon slayer when Uzui spanked Aoi (for refusing to go on a mission and resisting when her superior was taking her away on a mission, aka abandoning her duty because she was really scared and hasn't fought ever since passing final selection) but it would be less because in turning red they are at least family so it's a bit more normal

I myself have been subjected to narcissistic abuse before. Whenever I see crap like that happen in a movie, I not only do I start feeling emotional and grieving for the character that was just abused, but because I also have a lot of repressed anger, and has built up to the point where it has become completely feral and violent(and don't worry I'm working on a healthier way to manage it), I immediately start RAGING, feeling such resentment and hated towards the abuser. No joke, I have shouted at the abuser in several films where there was an abusive person to die, that I hope they die a slow, painful, and gruesome death, that they only deserve the worst of the worst punishments, and a tone of other nasty shit at the abuser in the film, just to release and express the tons and tons of bile that the selfish abusive pr*ck in the movie put in me. As if having panic attacks, mental breakdowns and paranoia from being abused by my father for 17 years, and constantly ruminating and depression and s*i ideation from having Cptsd wasn't enough, whenever I see shit like abuse get described, I start having flashbacks, and then I have a huge rage attack towards perpetrator. It's a bad trauma response I'm trying to learn to cope with. My point is: I'm glad they didn't make Ming a frikin' abusive piece of crap, let alone a full-blown entitled narcissist. I'm pretty sure if they put that scene in, a lot of people would definitely be pretty pissed and hate Ming. I also know people who have trauma from abuse would probably end up having some pretty nasty memories, like flashbacks, panic attacks, evoked from that scene if it was in there. In fact, I'm sure people with Cptsd or likewise, who are unfortunate enough to have the same issues with repressed anger and rage attacks like I do, would probably be exploding in a frenzy the same way I do. Not everyone who experiences rage attacks or repressed anger experiences it the same way, though. Everyone's experiences are different. (Ps, of they DID make Ming abusive, with that scene, I would have so much bile for her it would kill everything on the entire planet) I do apologize if this was over-the-top tho.

Nice... I can see Benny Blackwood serving as a villain in a possible sequel to this movie, albeit at a secondary rule. I have this crazy idea where the main baddie is a black sheep in the Lee family, who escapes from jail after decades of languishing, her criminal empire being by Benny in her absence. She wishes to regain the panda form that was taken from her by her kith and kin; then the world would be hers for the taking. This red panda would look eerily similar to Scar, given her dark, twisted soul. As Zazu once said, "There's one in every family." What do you think?

Considering I've seen this myself and with my kids probably close to 20 times by now and still find it one of the best movies (which I still can't not cry watching), no, I certainly don't wish for any of the other storylines would have been included. This has the most perfect focus, tempo and drive through-out.

I didn't mention it as there were so many rejected titles & other things to talk about in the video, but I absolutely think for that particular discarded title that the filmmakers were playing on Meilin's explosive personality/transformations (Red Panda Girl) and the fact that RPG is an acronym for Rocket-Propelled Grenade. :-)

I would of really liked Benny Blacktooth to be in the film, to be like a secondary villain. And to make him kind of like the villain from Abominable. And This person’s other idea of Ming using Mei’s red panda transformation for money which could make some conflict in the film.

I really would have loved to see Mei Mei become a Keiju sized Red Panda just like her mother and then having the two of them square off in an epic final battle that would have been a lot more exciting to watch compared to what we ultimately got!
