I think Viola made peace with the fact that her sister and husband ended up with each other, and moved away from feeling this was a betrayal. My heart breaks most for Ms. Jessel! Whose desire to love and be love is so strong, it betrays her. Peter betrays her. They have this most tragic love story, where you almost sympathize with his stealing because you know he’s trying to protect himself from the abusive father and mother he’s had. But then he does the heartbreaking, unforgivable act of deceiving Rebecca, and possessing her body to force her to commit suicide. Then he ABANDONS her midway through drowning to realize the horror while it’s all too late. She realizes all of her precious memories are no longer precious, yet nightmares, because it was during these moments (as shown in the polaroids where Peter is absent and only Rebecca is shown), he’s been “tucking her away” as he’s taken possession of her body. You can only see how tragic her end is, because one, she‘s murdered by the man she loves. Who is so afraid of his own loneliness, he rather condemn her to death, and unrealized dreams, with the hope of spending eternity with her. She has to realize the cruelty of his actions, as well as the cold reality that she’ll never achieve the goals she had before meeting Peter. Thus she’s truly lost herself.

And still after all of that, she still goes along with him and manipulates two children, literally stealing their bodies without permission until literally the very last second after Peter has taken over Miles. She literally could've stopped possessing Flora, could've stopped Miles and Flora from trusting Peter to that extent, and could've not possessed Flora in the first place. But she didn't. I can sympathize with their situations, but I don't have very much sympathy for the characters. Peter repeats the same abuse done onto him with no remorse or second thoughts, and Rebecca follows suit.

One thing that isn't explained is how the Wingrave parents (Charlotte and Dominic) slept in the room where the Lady of the lake goes every night. Yet it doesn't seem like anything ever happened to them, or that they saw her or even wondered why there was mud leading to their room every night.
@TheMrCoDS4 жыл бұрын
I have a theory that can explain that: I think that the lady in the lake doesn't wake every night, I think that when Charlotte and Dominic lived there she was in a dormient state and never woke up. After their death, it is Peter that wakes her up restarting her cycle of death when, as we see in episode 5, he tries to steal Charlotte's pearl necklace from her room: in fact when Hannah finds him she says that the necklace is 400 years old, so it may very well have belonged to Viola. As we see in episode 8 she's very possessive of her belongings, so the fact that someone tried to steal her necklace may have caused her spirit to wake up from her "dormient" state.
@missym8774 жыл бұрын
Paisk that makes sense except for one problem, the room, sits in the wing that’s “off limits” from the very start of the series. For that wing to be off limits, one has to ask, why? Why is it off limits? Someone had to make it off limits because they noticed the eerie situation. Another issue is how everyone sees Mrs. Grose, I mean to the point where she’s staying way after hours to watch the kids do a play, enjoy wine at a bonfire, late dinner. One thing we learn about the ghost is that they constantly find themselves slipping away and repeating the same scenario each day. So how is it that Mrs. Grose gets to carry out these very long moments with the living, rather than drifting away. Of course, we have that one moment Dani mentions she always disappears. But we have several where she’s staying around the living, acting engaging with them, longer than the traditional ghost would be thought to be able to do.
@HollywoodProperties4 жыл бұрын
Agreed with above. I think there was a line spoken about how it was 2 weeks between muddy footprints. In episode 8 it shows Violas walks and each time the house is changed drastically with the passage of time. So I feel shes more active some times, less active the next. So like above maybe she was less active while the wingraces were alive.

@@missym877 They did give us enough information to conclude why Mrs.Grose is so different compared to the other spirits (the differences you mentioned). It is Mrs.Grose denial over her own death that sets her apart from the other spirits, it is what allows her to spend so much time with the living and what prevents her from tucking away as often as the other spirits. Mrs.Grose is the only spirit at Bly Manor that refused to accept that she was actually dead, that is what sets her apart from the other spirits, and that is what allows her to spend so much time with the living. So she has a serious case of denial. Let me use the end of episode 7 to help explain why. I am talking about Peter's plan for Mrs.Grose, his plan to get her out of his way in episode 7. Peter/Miles plan for taking her to see her own corpse at the bottom of the well, you need to understand Peter's reasoning for making her look down at her own dead corpse at the bottom of the well. Why did Peter want to show Mrs.Grose her own dead body? We know it is to get her out of his way so that she doesn't meddle with his plans. But how did he know showing Mrs.Grose her own dead body would work? How did Peter know it would get her out the way? If we can figure out how he knew it would work, we will also figure out why she is so different and why she can spend so much time with the living etc. Peter understood that is was Mrs.Grose own denial that was allowing her to be different, that is why he knew showing Mrs.Grose her own corpse would work. And he even knew it would cause her to tuck away into memories once she accepted her death, let me explain. When Miles was possessed by Peter's spirit in the attic (once Miles had accepted Peter's spirit in permanently), Mrs.Grose came calling at the door for Dani and the children. So Peter/Miles took Mrs. Grose to the well (she was not aware Miles was possessed by Peter, so she went along with him), the same well with which Peter/Miles murdered her by pushing her into it in episode 5. After Mrs.Grose came calling for them at the attic, Peter/Miles said to Flora that "we've got to put that one away for good away for good". Peter, has figured out that it is Mrs.Grose denial over her own death, that is the reason she is not tucking into memories as often as the other spirits and the reason she is running around she as if she were living, he is quite aware that she is different. Peter even said to Mrs Grose while they were walking to the well together "I have been wondering what makes you so special", he has been wondering why she is not tucking away as often as the other spirits, and why she is able to run around from day to day as if she were still living, but I am jumping ahead. So Peter's plan is to take her to the well to show Mrs.Grose her own dead body, so that her denial will come to an end, and so that she would tuck into memories as the other spirits do, and get her out of his way so that he can continue with his plans. Remember, Peter knows she is dead because he murdered her, and he has been watching her this entire time going around as if she were still alive, and he has realized that it is her denial that is allowing her to resist tucking to a certain extent, and that it is he denial that allows her to spend so much time with the living. So his plan is to force her to see her dead body, so that it would force her to accept that she is dead. He knows once she does accept her death, it will get her out of his way and he can continue with his plans. And he was right, once she sees her body and does accept her death, she does immediately get tucked into memories, until she breaks out of one later on to help everybody. That is why he said "we've got to put that one away for good away for good", his plan for putting her away is to cause her to tuck away into memories as the other spirits do, so we just have to understand Peters reasoning and his plan. Let us continue from when Peter/Miles and Mrs.Grose are walking to her body that is in the well. What Peter (who was possessing Miles) explained to her on the way to showing her her own corpse at the well was, "that she really had to make it difficult for herself, walking around day to day, cleaning up and dreaming up new clothes to wear. Carrying on like nothing happened". And at first Peter thought she was just "stubborn", but he came to realize that it was "more than that". Peter even asked the other spirits, and they said "it takes a moment" meaning it takes a while for all new spirits to accept that they are dead. And the other spirits also said "we're all on our own time", and then Peter added "but you" meaning "except for you Mrs.Grose, you are not accepting your death like the rest of us spirits.", so Peter realized she was different according to Peter's dialogue. Peter then went on to say the he "finally worked it out", and that she reminded him of the "Wile E. Coyote" from the "Road Runner Looney Toons" cartoons. Peter said, just as the Wile E Coyote from the cartoons could run off the edge of a cliff and keep on running in the air, and not actually fall to the ground, until he looked down at the ground, she too was the same. In other words, her being over the edge of a cliff is her being dead, and her not looking down is her not accepting that she is dead. So making her look down at her body at the well, is basically forcing her to accept her death, and force her to stop denying it. It is her denial that is preventing her from being exactly like the other spirits. So she is not experiencing the same amount of tucking as the other spirits (or dreaming as Peter refers to it in their conversation) and she is being seen by the living and is spending so much time with the living, because she has refused to accept that she is actually dead yet. So Peter/Miles forced Mrs.Grose to look down at her own corpse (like the coyote has to look down before he falls) in the well again by Peter/Miles, to force her to accept that she was dead. And his plan worked, straight after she looks at her dead body again and accepts her death, she immediately tucks into her memory of her and Owen in the kitchen, until she managed to get out of said memory at the start of episode 9 to help everybody. So it is her tremendous force of denial, her denial that refused to accept that she was dead (and her will behind it) that allowed her to spend more time with the living and resist tucking into memories as often as the other spirits (but she did still tuck away on occasion as mentioned by Dani. But she was forced into being more like all the other spirits once Peter made her look at her corpse and accept her death, so because of her denial, she was tucking away much less often compared to the other spirits, and she was spending so much time with the living as well). So the explanations to her differences from other spirits, can be found in Peter's dialogue and his reasoning behind his plans. And we have hints in other scenes earlier in the series as well. Such as Mrs.Grose various memories sequences that also give us enough information to confirm this explanation. We can even see it at the end of episode 5, when we see her die at the well for the first time. Straight after Peter/Miles pushed her into the well and she dies, we see her spirit standing shocked at the top of the well, and she is looking down at her corpse, and then Dani arrives with Flora at the well to meet and greet them (Dani's first arrival at the manor). Mrs.Grose then stops looking at her corpse in the well when Dani greets her, and Mrs.Grose moves straight over to greet Dani, denying her death in the process (and Dani thought she was alive, and Mrs.Grose convinced herself that she was alive). We also saw her corpse staring at a crack on the wall at the bottom of the well, the same crack she saw in the kitchen in previous episodes. The same crack she asked Jamie to fix, but Jamie couldn't find the crack, because the crack was at the bottom of the well the entire time. So Mrs.Grose knew she was dead, but her tremendous denial is what made her different from other spirits. So she has been denying her death from the moment of her death, she never accepted it. Deep down Mrs.Grose knew she was dead, but she denied it and refused to accept. So we do have enough evidence to support that conclusion which is, Mrs.Grose denial over her own murder and death is what sets her apart from the other spirits. And there are many other things I picked up on that were related to Mrs.Grose and also other non related things in the series as well, but this post has already gotten quite long, and I am sure others will cover it. But I do recommend a re-watch to pick up on all the little details you missed for yourself, much more fun than reading my giant wall of text on KZbin.

Okay last post lol! A few small things to notice: 1. Mrs. Grose throughout the series touches her head A LOT, it’s a hint of her death later unveiled in the series. 2. The moment when Peter catches Mrs. Grose spying on he and Rebecca, he says “Honestly Hannah, vacuuming? Live a little.” This is before either one of them are dead, but it hints to her later regret of not living and expressing herself to Owen while she was alive. It’s a foreshadow to the audience that all she does is worry, clean and live by a code. And when she dies, she’s even so stuck because she’s had such a tunnel vision focus. She quite literally forgot to LIVE while alive. 3. When Mrs. Grose reprimands Miles for smoking, he sighs “Honestly, Hannah.” Initially, it looks like Miles is just imitating Peter whom he admires so much. But we later learn, no that’s Peter talking, saying his favorite exasperated phase “honestly, Hannah...” 4. Just as Miss Jessel is possessed, we know she’s possessed because her eyes turn blue, the scene flashes to Peter, whose eyes are blue. Tears run down his face, as the scene turns back to Miss. Jessel in the lake, with tears flowing down her face. Bonus: in the bedroom underwater scene, Rebecca sees her floating body in the ceiling as she remembers her last horrifying breath.

People are complaining that it is not aa scary as Hill house and that it is worse. Personally, i love how different they are. First season bringed fear in my bones, it was something constant cold and always present. I really connected with the characthers and i was fascinated how unique each of them was and by things that made them special. And i could feel how they all had one another but no one trusted the other person (except Nell and Luke). It was hauntingly beautiful and depression was portraided so well. There were so many scary things in the house and twists upon twists on them. The second season had those too, but not so much in your face, and it was not so much about evil, but secrets and tragic. What i could feel through this season though was a feeling of being completely alone in the unknown. In Hill house i felt like i was there with them, but there was this feeling of connection, you connected and got to know each characther persinally. So you were not alone. In Bly, getting to know characthers was more by revealing secrets but very very slowly, not in connection kind of way. And characthers in this one were not a family. There were just secrets, sadness, terror and alone.

Ep.4 and 5 were so f*cking brilliant. I really felt for them all caught in their loops because it is so true even now WE ARE ALL CAUGHT IN OUR LOOPS and will have brief moments of respite to breathe and say, why do I do these things I do? Am I conscious or still sleeping? and like a whale our moment of air is up and we sink back into the deep of our ''sub-''conscious routines, into the dark of our depths, filled with memories that can never fill the space of being alone. Truly that is the fear/horror I get from this season, we'd like to be with someone but deep down we always know the truth, that we will be alone once more, nothing is forever.

I binged the first 8 episodes but then was reluctant to watch the last. From watching the first series I knew someone I liked would die and I rightly thought it’d be Dani. I cried when Rebecca had Flora let her in so she wouldn’t have to experience her drowning. And I sobbed when Dani gave herself for Flora. In fact I’m sobbing now as I type this just thinking about it. Mike Flanagan knocked out of the park again! Unlike American Horror Story the Haunting series ARE actually scary.

My theory is that the ghost at the end of the show WAS Dani. She did accept Jamie's offer in the lake, but unlike the others who selfishly wanted control, she just wanted to be with Jamie. Therefore, she stayed with Jamie without Jamie knowing it.

Interesting theories! I hadn’t thought about the significance of Flora giving Dani the doll when they said goodbye, and I like your reading of this. I don’t quite agree with the theory that Jamie is “tucked into a happy memory” of herself with Dani in that final scene, though, because we (the audience) are not in her dream, but outside. Jamie is sleeping, and seemingly oblivious to the hand on her shoulder that is visible to the viewer. I read the final image as signifying that Dani’s spirit is always with Jamie, even though Jamie can’t see her (and watching over her rather than haunting her).

I’m going to have to disagree on one point in the video: Peter was not with Miles at his boarding school. We see in Flora’s letter that he’s with her. In her drawing we see Peter, Rebecca, and a crying Flora. Miles always looks like he regrets his actions while he’s making them. He’s trying to find his teacher’s “key.” What will get him sent home to help Flora? His teacher has incredible patience, so it takes a lot. But this was all Miles. Peter is trapped at Bly.
@Veryy_Victoriaa4 жыл бұрын
mossomness the key thing was a hint that Peter was possessing miles. Peter had a discussion about keys with Rebecca as well. They just weren’t on the nose about it. If you look at his face when he tells Rebecca he couldn’t leave the property through her body, it looks as if he’s lying
@MarkHogan9944 жыл бұрын
@@Veryy_Victoriaa No, you're mistaken. Miles explicitly says to his teacher that he needed to find his key. He needed to find out what would get him expelled and sent home. That's all Miles. If you watch Miles' scenes at school, they don't make sense if Peter was possessing him at that point. For example when he was talking to his teacher about his parents being dead and never coming back. He was genuinely sad. If Peter had left the property he'd need to be constantly possessing Miles, but Miles was not behaving in a manner consistent with that interpretation. Peter never left Bly.
@Veryy_Victoriaa4 жыл бұрын
Mark Hogan you believe what you want, but Peter was already possessing miles which was why he’d been sent there. That’s what I believe. I will say that if it wasn’t Peter, it just shows how deep Peter already had a hold of Miles. The best part of this series is it’s open to debate/interpretation and doesn’t feed us answers
@mossomness4 жыл бұрын
@@Veryy_Victoriaa if Peter has already had the ability to possess Miles well enough to always leave the property with him, what was his final plan when Dani was tied up? It looks like he wanted the kids to give Becca and him full control of their bodies so they could leave together. But why would he do that if they could already? And there’s also the problem with Flora’s drawing again. Why did she draw Peter with her if he was with Miles?
@Veryy_Victoriaa4 жыл бұрын
mossomness IMO he only had temporary possession of miles each time. He needed his consent to possess him entirely/permanently without Miles being able to kick him out/ come back. He also couldn’t really be with Rebecca by possessing her since she was tucked into her memories while he controlled her body which is why the narration as he walked to the lake as her mentioned she was elsewhere and he alone. His aim seems to be controlling and manipulation no matter who it is.

I have a theory that Flora actually gave that story to Viola, or the lady in the lake as she is called. At times it make sense. Like how Jamie happened to know the story, because Flora told her the story. Jamie admits to parts of what she said were just made up in the last episode after being asked if it was true. And finally how flora is told to give her ghosts (figments of her imagination) stories.

I think the scariest thing about the series is that the fate of Dani is so similar to the reality of what death is. It’s easy to get caught up in the story and see all the other characters who move on or live on after death and recognize Dani’s fate as the worst. Yet Dani simply fades away caught in some kind of limbo. Her fate is the most realistic. Just fading away.
@mcfrickenwatcher1953 жыл бұрын
i have a theory i need you all to hear, i think "the lady in the lake" is based off of an urban legend in washington state, theres this lake in washington state called lake crescent, and in the 1930s a woman worked at a lodge close to the lake. Her name was hallie, she met a man who she fell in love with and married. but hallie and the man started to fight. eventually hallie went missing, she was thought to have run away, and the man she married eventually married hallies sister(see the resemblance) Eventually hallies body was found in the lake, with her nose flattened, and "wax like skin." Her body was not recognized right away so locals called it "the lady in the lake" which is literally the exact same name as in the show. now in present day, there is a legend that if you see the lady of the lake, she will drag you into the lake, where you die. That sounds very similar to the story of Viola from the show, not the exact same but similar. tell me what you think

I think that Dani was Viola's descendant. That's why Viola accepted her. Arthur sold the house and moved somewhere. He didn't have a lot of money, so he could have tried to make a living in the US, mirroring Dani moving to UK after the loss of a loved one. That would explain why Dani was haunted by her feyonce: she had her own gravity

Omg that would sort of explain the parallel actions of Viola and Dani. For example, Viola would often sleep, wake and walk cause she felt this restlessness in her, similar to how Dani felt restless on her first night and went to walk around in the house. Also, it would explain why Dani “felt it in her bones” before saying the same exact phrase Viola said to her own daughter. That would make what Dani said about love and possession being 2 different things so much more meaningful. Because unlike Viola who might be her ancestor and was controlling of her loved ones, Dani didn’t even try to claim and possess Jaime’s life by refusing to drag her into the lake with her. Instead she let Jaime go on to live her life and “feel everything for the both of them”. Brb I’m gonna go cry again

I liked the theory of the ending that suggested that Bly never actually existed as older Jamie said in the last episode, if you were to search for that place in England you weren't going to find it, but instead, the big house where Flora is getting married is the actual Bly house where everything happened, and older Jamie filling up the tub and opening the door was just a way to try and catch Dani pacing at night and the hand in her shoulder represents exactly that. But that loop from the first episode to the last makes me believe Jamie just does that every night nonetheless, anyway there's a lot more great theories out there, this is just my favorite

I think he was lying to Rebecca when she says it didn’t work and he says no bc he realized if he leaves as “possessed Rebecca” they can’t actually be together, so he manipulates her into thinking she has to stay if she wants to be with him. On the other hand, dani and jamie relationship was a simple normal true love and dani never actually haunted jamie or anyone else thereafter. That was also real love that prevented viola from doing any harm to flora : flora remind her of her daugther and the love for her daughter was the only love that was real and not possessive like she usually was in her life.

In the scene where Henry’s alter ego is talking to him making him relive his past memories he says something like “are you going to be the own who’s going to tell them (the kids) that their parents death wasn’t an accident” was there more to the story of their deaths or did henry’s alter ego just mean that the reason for the parents trip was his fault?

I think that the alter ego meant that due to the affair the reasoning behind the trip was in his mind his fault. Another masterpiece in the Haunting franchise. Perfectly casted and perfectly splendid. I do however have some quesitons in regards to how drasitically both Jamie and Owen aged. When they met at Owen's cafe (5 years after their escape from mansion) they looked the same as when they left Bly (Miles and Flora were 19 and 17 at the time of that meeting). Now lets say if Flora is in her late 20's at her wedding which is like a decade from the meeting at the cafe I dont see how just 10 years would make such a difference in Jamie and Owen's appearence when 5 years made no difference whatsoever. Also Owen mentioned in that meeting that Miles and Flora remember Bly Manor as a house they spent their summers in not the hauntings and the ghosts but Flora and Miles were completely unaware of its existence when old Jamie told the story and said there is no such place as Bly Manor in England. Maybe I am leaning too much into this. There is something called "suspension of disbelief" afterall.

People are bashing this show because they are used to the typical jump scares,screams and horrible ghosts. They need to realise The haunting series puts much more effort into the storyline,cinematography and acting . Hill house,Bly Manor are surely setting a new benchmark in the genre of horror and gothic romance. Love it ❤️

Not only is Dani's story very cool because of the fiance thing, but also the mirror symbolism: her finally being able to accept herself (aka, look in the mirror) as a WLW

Viola end up loving her husband by the way. She starts loosing sleep at night when she began to feel like this, she start to "wake up, walk" before even being dead. That is why she mistreated her sister so much. Because of possessiveness, which is a returning theme in the serie.

I think the ending is a true reunion unaware you Jamie. She wouldn’t have had a memory of a place she never been, the hotel on the day of flora wedding. And for some reason I think the au pair visits her every night in her sleep because she literally can’t be with Jamie. And maybe that truth would be more painful then just the hope to be reunited one day

wait...Viola took six years before she "died".... isn't that the same amount of time she gave Dani?

for all those wondering why the kids lost their memories at the end and why jamie struggles to remember her own past and has memories of the lady of the lake: the show tells us that when you become one with a ghost you lose your memories eventually and become that ghost as seen with dani and lake lady but the kids merged with peter and rebecca who are no longer ghosts and just dead so when they lost their former memories they were able to make new ones In terms of jamie when she married dani she technically became one with a part ghost . Hence she was also slowly losing her memories and can also explain why she has the lady of the lakes memories as you can see in the beginning when she said the story belonged to someone she knew . You can also see this in her behaviour at the end also when she kept repeating the same actions everyday waiting for dani to come back and not knowing why she was doing it just like how the lake lady did while waiting for her daughter to come back to her

I think you missed the point of Jamie telling the story. She actually NEVER forgot the memories. Jaime, Owen and Dani agreed at Owen’s restaurant to never “bring it up” or tell the kids the truth of their time at Bly Manor. They considered their newfound amnesia as a blessing to save them from the images that haunt them (Owen, Dani, Henry and Jaime). So Jamie tells the story of their past as a “gift” and dresses it up as a “simple ghost” story, to not traumatize the now adult children with the realization that these things happened to them. She even goes as far to lie and say the manor “doesn’t exist” or couldn’t be found because it’s fiction. But she, Owen and Henry all know it’s real, they all remember the ghosts. Jamie is just sparing the children the horror and nightmares. But she never actually loses her memory. This is once again, proven further with the ending, in which she runs water and cracks her bedroom door to invite Dani to visit her. If she had forgotten her memories, she would of forgotten Dani and forgotten the way in which she could summon her. She is conscious and aware of her actions the entire time.

Does anyone notice that Dani's eyes became 2 different color on each side right after Viola possessing her?? And it carried out until the end of the last episode....
