1st flight of the day.
The goal for this flight was to get some practice doing transitions from basetube to downtubes while carrying a little speed, simulating the transition I need to make on coming in for a landing. Also, to focus on getting a good landing and to not worry about the spot landing (unless it happened--and it did not).
Launched shortly after another pilot who had a more buoyant glider, so I ended up almost catching up with him over the LZ. (He passes under me at about 4:30). I didn't want to come in directly behind him, so I went to land from the opposite direction--even though there was a mild tailwind. (Stupid decision on my part. Should have followed and used the AMPLE landing zone to land off to one side.)
Have to be honest here. There was another reason I didn't follow him in. There was a cloud over the LZ on the opposite side of the field, and I REALLY wanted to fly through it, and that was the excuse I needed to set myself up for landing in a mild tailwind. (Cloud is at about 5:00.)
The landing and flare were good, but I had to run the heck out of that landing because of that tailwind. Let's avoid doing that in the future--or just roll in.
Lots of room for improvement here, including impulse control.
