Everywhere you look, from restaurants to corporate, there are staffing shortages. And although aviation is not exempt from the current situation, the thing that seems to be different about the staffing shortages in aviation, especially in the flight attendant position, is the fact that the shortages are due to the limited capacity in the hiring departments. Not due to a lack of qualified, ready, and eager candidates.
The airlines literally cannot interview, hire, background check, and train new flight attendants fast enough to meet the rising travel demands. Southwest Airlines, for example, still has jets on the ground that could be flying except there are not enough crew members to work the flights.
This has resulted in very frequent, yet sporadic, open application windows from all the legacy carriers, and most of the majors.
United Airlines accepted applications for less than 24 hours a few months ago. Delta Air Lines reopened a previously closed job listing in an effort to collect new (not re-applying) candidates.
On the other hand, we’ve seen other carriers' applications remain open for over a year now. And some airlines have shifted to an exclusively online interview process, allowing them to pick up the pace on hiring.
The good news is this proves that there isn’t a lack of opportunity in 2022! If you want to become a flight attendant, this is the year to go all-in on your goal.
But you need to be ready! Airlines are moving QUICKLY once the interview process starts. Here’s what you need to begin working on so you’re ready when your opportunity comes knocking.
1. Get your resume airline ready. You need a resume that is geared toward the flight attendant job, ready to go at all times. The Southwest Airlines recruiting team frequently reminds us during their weekly Career Connections webinar that applying early is important, and they joke that if you get the notification for a job opening in the grocery store, you should leave your cart in the aisle and go apply immediately! If you happen to have time before applying, it’s nice to tweak your resume towards the airline you are applying with, but sometimes time is of the essence, and you need to apply ASAP. Having an airline-ready resume written especially for the flight attendant position (not necessarily a specific airline) is all you need in most cases to apply and get an interview invitation.
2. Apply for your passport. Some airlines require you to have your passport in your possession when you apply, but not all airlines! Read the job description carefully to learn whether or not you need a passport to apply or if you simply need one before training. That being said, the sooner you get your passport, the better. Once you have your passport, you’ll be able to apply to any airline without hesitation! A passport is an investment, but it will literally open the world for you.🌍🌎🌏
3. Begin to prepare for your upcoming interview before you even get an invitation. Recently, we have seen airlines expedite the interview process in several ways and you want to start preparing for your future interviews before you even get your invitation. I do my best to accommodate every request and work one-on-one with as many people as possible, but when time is of the essence, time is limited. Start working through the Interview Workbook and moving towards your goal ASAP.

Just FYI I just got my passport in 4 weeks! They are moving much quicker than before. It cost $130 for the book and $35 for the processing fee.ANY yes you still go the post office. If you go online in your city it will list the closest office to you. I had to make an appointment but check in your city for more information. I hope this helps.

How many hours do you have to work per week in order to make a living? Do you know what’s the average monthly pay for flight attendants? Sorry to ask so many questions. Just wanting to know. Hi Abby, since there is so much talk about a recession and inflation being so high is there a big chance airlines will lay people off if the country does go into the bad recession. This what is confusing me because airline are hiring a lot right now or are they are just cover for a curtain season and once we hit the recession that will starting laying people off.

I know regional airlines don’t require it, but the major ones do. Although, they are allowing un”jabbed” employees to return, but a lot of people (from all industries) are refusing to return to the employers who let them go so easily, so who knows what their next step is.
