Thanks for the video! My dad was a Marine Corps pilot, and few F6F, and F7F, along with several other planes between the end of WWII and the Korean war. It is nice to see them in action!

Great collection of Cats including my favorite the scrappy little Wildcat. Don't know how many airworthy examples of this iconic warbird are in existence but the one you included in your presentation must be one of very few. Gratitude and congrats to the group of dedicated preservationists who keep her flying. Our country owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to that tough little customer and all of the men who flew her and maintained her under very difficult circumstances during her service in WWII. Outstanding piece.

@gdude39572 жыл бұрын
is it planes of fame usa/?
@gregmctevia50872 жыл бұрын
@@gdude3957 Years ago I read a piece on the early model Wildcats that didn't have an automatic, electrical or hydraulic driven system to retract and extend the landing gear. The pilot had to raise and lower the gear by means of a manual cranking system in the cockpit. Thus some pilots transitioning from older designs with fixed landing gear would sometimes forget to crank the gear down before landing and accidentally belly land the airplane. I'm not sure if the story is true, or if the incidents were widespread but it seems plausible. It could be my memory is faulty and the subject of the article was the F3F which was the all metal biplane fighter design that the Wildcat was based on and also had a nose mounted landing gear. It may have had the manually operated landing gear system.
@twandepan2 жыл бұрын
@@gregmctevia5087 Nope it’s true the early wildcats had to be cranked to raise or lower the gear. Think it was something like 28 times before the gear was fully raised? Fair to say you wouldn’t get bored right after takeoff.

@@SteveSmith-eb6ze The Wildcat was an excellent fighter, why would all of them get shot down?
@Akaeru3 ай бұрын
@@SteveSmith-eb6ze by the end of the war the Wildcat achieved a 9:1 kill ratio over the Zero. Seems like it should be the opposite.
@SteveSmith-eb6ze3 ай бұрын
@@Akaeru Early in the war,the zero had a 12.1 kill ratio,by the end of the war it turned in Americas favor to around 6.9 to 1. The hellcat had a better kill ratio which I believe was 19.1. The hellcat had the best kill ratio of any plane in WW2 and was one of the most decisive weapons of the war. There are a few books out there written by the Japanese pilots who survived their first meetings with the Hellcat,they we’re shocked,at a distance they assumed they were the wildcat and figured easy pickings but once in combat they were horrified by the new American fighter.

@@Sticknub Excellent point. However the F 5 Tiger ll was built by Northrop Aircraft as an independently financed light twin engine fighter to be marketed primarily to export customers, although the USAF did buy a few. As the F 5 Tiger was not built by Gruman Aircraft for the USN as a carrier based fighter, she really can't be included in the iconic "Cat" series of Navy fighters built by Gruman. Great catch though. I forgot the Northrop built a fighter named Tiger as well.
