The flight starts near the village Kahlenbergerdorf approximately 7 km upstream from the historical city center of Vienna. We pass the bifurcation of the two main river arms, the ‘Wolfs arm’ and the ‘Tabor arm’ near Nußdorf, and follow the ‘Tabor arm’ and the ‘Wiener arm’ (today’s ‘Donaukanal’) towards the city. Passing by the city, our flight ends in the floodplain near contemporary ‘Prater Hauptallee’. The state of the river landscape reflects the all-embracing transformation of the channel network after the dramatic floods in 1565/66, the beginning of a severe phase of the Little Ice Age (so-called ‘Grindelwald fluctuation’). Until 1565, the ‘Tabor arm’ constituted the main Danube arm. As a consequence of the heavy floods, the former side arm, the ‘Wolfs arm’, evolved to the new main channel in 1570. In the following decades, the Viennese authorities tried to block the new main channel and to force the Danube in its old riverbed, the ‘Tabor arm’ - without any success. The respective hydraulic constructions can be seen in the Danube River at the beginning of our flight.
The reconstruction of the Viennese river landscape in 1570 is based on several historical maps, topographical views, survey data and written sources from the 16th to the 17th century.
Der Flug startet nahe der Ortschaft Kahlenbergerdorf ca. 7 km flussauf vom historischen Stadtzentrum von Wien. Wir passieren die Verzweigung der beiden Hauptstromarme „Wolfsarm“ und „Taborarm“ nahe Nußdorf und folgen zuerst dem „Taborarm“ und danach dem „Wiener Arm“ (heutiger Donaukanal) Richtung Stadt. Am Stadtzentrum vorbeifliegend endet unser Flug im Augebiet nahe der heutigen Prater Hauptallee. Der Zustand der Flusslandschaft spiegelt die umfassende Transformation des Gewässersystems nach den dramatischen Hochwässern von 1565/66 wider. Diese Hochwässer sind im Zusammenhang mit dem Beginn einer extremen Phase der Kleinen Eiszeit, der sogenannten „Grindelwald Fluktuation“ zu sehen. Bis 1565 war der „Taborarm“ der Hauptstrom der Donau. Als Folge der schweren Hochwässer entwickelte sich der vormalige Seitenarm namens „Wolfsarm“ zum neuen Hauptstrom im Jahr 1570. In den folgenden Jahrzehnten versuchten die Wiener Behörden den neuen Hauptarm abzudämmen und die Donau in das alte Flussbett, den „Taborarm“, zu zwingen - freilich ohne Erfolg. Die betreffenden Wasserbauten sind zu Beginn des Fluges inmitten der Donau zu sehen.
Die Rekonstruktion der Wiener Donau-Flusslandschaft um 1570 basiert auf zahlreichen historischen Karten, topografischen Ansichten, Vermessungen und schriftlichen Quellen aus dem 16. und 17. Jahrhundert.
