Haha - at some point, I think it was 2018, I had a patch where I was flying WGN-AKL return once every week or so, and kept being on flights with the same crew members. One day I had the same crew out and in. It resulted in a bit of ‘first name basis’.

The flight was in January, and Covid was starting to take off and I reckon they were trying to figure out how to keep crew infections as low as possible, and they thought if they reduced passenger / crew interactions they’d reduce crew infections. Within a couple of months they were back doing service so I guess it didn’t work?

I hope it was still an 8/10! My process has changed a lot over the last few years. I now like to capture enough footage to have options, and the flights that have reviews made generally have something interesting happen. Like in this one that random human's phone rang after take off, and there an interesting story about AKLs runways. Also the one's that get made generally take off and land in daylight. I've tried so many different cameras, I'm currently using a Go Pro 10 and a DJI Osmo Pocket for most footage - with some footage on my phone, and some from a Canon M6 (when I need / want a decent optical zoom). I have a voice recorder that I've used to try and get cabin audio, stuff like crew announcements, but it's really hard to get clear audio from it - the best cabin audio is actually off the Osmo Pocket. I've come to realise that the footage I have is the footage I have - and if stuff goes wrong I can still often put together a complete review. But I also have SO MUCH FOOTAGE of flights that will never become a review because it feels incomplete - I don't have enough footage to tell the full story. I also have a least 6 reviews in half completed states waiting for me to get it together and finish them off! I then dump all the media into Premiere and review the footage and audio to see if there's any gold in there - a snippet of audio that's entertaining or interesting or funny - or video that looks really great. I then put together a rough edit - I'm ruthless on tight editing, and use the minimum footage required to set the scene and tell the story, so it they keep moving and (hopefully!) aren't boring, but I want to have enough to link it all together so it's coherent. And I like to have in flight footage to use behind screenshots of flight information, or behind graphics. I rewatch what I have over and over, cutting that tightening it, redoing voice overs, shifting stuff around. Then I lay over the music and muck around a bit more. I reckon it's 2-3 hours per minute to make. Give it a go - it's fun. I've learnt heaps about Premiere, and a ton about airports and aircraft. I probably film 20% of my domestic flights, and maybe 30% of those turn into reviews. I film most of my Internationals when I'm travelling alone, and maybe 50% when I'm with my family - I think I've turned 30% of those into reviews. You'll probably film a few and find you're missing stuff, use that to learn what you need next time. Also, give yourself a second or so of lead in and lead out on your shots so you have a good steady shot in the middle, and to give you options for transitions in your edit.

Question for you. I have an upcoming SYD-WLG flight in Y and wonder if they will let me carry on both a large backpack (laptop) as well as a roller suitcase (carry on size)?
@SupersonicKiwi2 жыл бұрын
Probably. I’ve never been asked and frequently have a carry on and a small backpack. In Economy you can have one carry on and one other ‘small item’ like a handbag or laptop. If you’re Koru or Star Alliance Gold or above then definitely - you can have two items plus a ‘small item’. Details here: www.airnewzealand.co.nz/carry-on-baggage Also, you’ll likely be on an A320neo, which is a nice plane, if you’re into that sort of thing.
@jasontoi86282 жыл бұрын
Why do they always say we invite star alliance customers and then 30 seconds later everyone hurry up lol

Lovely. How did you manage to operate two cameras? How many windows do you have? 😁 Wellington takeoff view is second to none!
@SupersonicKiwi2 жыл бұрын
Thanks - yeah, it was a beautiful day. I had to look back at the raw footage to confirm, but yes, I had two windows. It's taken a while to settle on a process, but currently I'll film one view with a camera on a suction mount that's stuck to the window and get the other angles with a camera I hold in my hand. I didn't take my suction mount on this day, as I was giving my 360 camera a try out and I can only carry so many things at one time (when walking on and off I had 3 cameras going, I must have looked like a total nerd), so I held two cameras during the take off and landing, which I think I mostly covered for in the edit, but you can see some movement in the landing where I am focused on one and the other wanders a bit! Edit: sorry, I just realised I misread one of your questions - I have many cameras. I try to limit myself to taking a maximum of three on a flight, but sometimes I fall (I used four on this flight).

My 6ft 10 frame needs business class…lol. Why AirNZ got rid of the domestic biz is beyond me. Do you have to pay extra for fwd of the exit rows? Or just luck of the draw??
@SupersonicKiwi2 жыл бұрын
You were probably the only one paying for it! I’m pretty sure you need to either be Koru or Gold, or buy the most expensive Flexi to be able to pre-select sears forward of the exit rows (but the rules change from time to time and I honestly have trouble keeping up). Once check-in opens you might get lucky, if they aren’t all taken already.
