Great video. As a Brit living in the US I take the daytime BA flight from BOS to LHR every couple of months and love it as a way to beat jet lag. It was reinforced recently when I had to take an emergency overnight flight and I was toast for a couple of days as my body and sleep cycle tried to reset itself

From the comments it seems like a lot of Brit's visiting NYC would prefer longer in the city so prefer an overnight flight back even if that wipes them out for the first few days back (at work!!!!). I'm with you though - good sleep is too valuable to me at my age!!!

Always appreciated the daytime flights when I had the chance to take them. Once upon a time, AA had a 0915ish departure from ORD that would put you into LHR at approx 2215. It was superb, particularly if I was going to London specifically, as by the time I got to town, checked into the hotel, etc, it was really a natural time for bed. Awoke the following morning feeling refreshed and ready to go. Oddly enough, it is nice to see a video about travel in economy. We all would prefer to always 'turn left', but sometimes the journey distance and the pocketbook dictate sitting in the back.
@MattsPlanet Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Generally good feedback on the day flight option... Some feedback that its not really an option if you don't live in a city with one of those flights as you can't connect in same day so need another night in a hotel... Plus feedback that people would prefer to save the cost of a night's accommodation by spending it on a plane. I suspect the latter comes from the younger elements of my viewership! And thanks for the feedback on the Economy video... They tend to not do too well (although this one is performing well) as they're less interesting.... There's less to talk about in the video too... So I will do them, but I'm trying to add some value to the video by focussing on an extra dimension, such as with the day flight option...

OK as I'm on a roll ive got one more, entirely disconnected, question. I recently rediscovered the delights of travelling hand luggage only. For example i spent a month in the US hand luggage only just used laundry at my apartments. But then i recently did a 2 week holiday which included a cruise so i took checked baggage but in retrospect Id have done better to used laundry at the hotels and ship, rates were not too expensive. So my next trip, 2 weeks 3 hotels, i'll be taking just enough for 5 days which in a tropical setting is fine to go HL only. Is this something you regularly do on your frequent travels especially when there are multiple connections? Its so liberating to get off the plane and walk straight out after immigration ( or walk to next gate without wondering if your lugagge made that tight connection)
@MattsPlanet Жыл бұрын
I'm a big fan of HBO - it is liberating to be off and away! I tend not to be away for more than a week which makes it easier... Plus going to warmer places helps as you don't need bulkier warm stuff. And if you're in Asia, getting laundry washed and ironed is really cheap - about £2.50 for a kilo of laundry in Phuket recently. That tends to shorten the life of your clothing though... I actually find shoes to be the biggest issue... I'll check bags when I'm getting on a cruise as you usually need jackets and a variety of shoes... And checked luggage is useless to you if the airline loses the bag!

I flew in the night before I flew out.... Some mates said I was bonkers for not heading into Manhattan, even if it would have been expensive to do so for only a few hours... So I stayed close to JFK. Marvellous video Matt. These eastbound daytime transatlantic flights have been a niche for decades. Back in summer 1970 I took BOAC's standard VC-10 JFK-LHR which departed at 1000 (I flew YYZ-JFK with AC which departed around 0700). In the 1980s I did a Wardair YYZ-LGW daytime flight. Both these flights were not full hence I had lots of space but of course Y was more comfortable in those days. One thing you forgot to mention was that Concorde always crossed the Atlantic daytime eastbound. Note that Jet Blue will launch its first JFK-LHR daytime flight end March. The issue for most people is the extra cost of accommodation at either or both ends of the route. And tour operators prefer to book customers on overnight flights as they can offer one extra night's holiday at no extra cost !
@MattsPlanet Жыл бұрын
Thanks Alex - I didn't mention Concorde as I didn't know that - although I was thinking about how Concorde did it back in the day with such a short flight time - that would explain it! Not much chance of sleeping in a Concorde seat! I guess if you live in the UK and so are heading home you're not saving a night but you are cutting short your time in NYC - but I'd still prefer to not feel "dug up" the day after travelling back...
@alexmcwhirter6611 Жыл бұрын
@@MattsPlanet There were two daytime Concorde flights JFK-LHR. One left around 0900 or 1000 to arrive into LHR around 1800. The other departed around 1300 and landed back at LHR around 2200. BA had a link to Hertz chauffeur drive to take pax to and from the airports although it wasn't complimentary. Back in 1988 BA would offer a commuter jet connection BOS-JFK which linked to the lunchtime Concorde to LHR (the BOS-JFK flight arrived beside Concorde and pax and luggage were transferred without further checks). I also attended the Duluth air show (at which Concorde was a star performer) in 1986 (I think) and the Concorde charter returned Duluth-Gander-LHR. Those were the days !

Its annoying that West Coast to LHR rarely works with tier point runs... I did once backtrack a route to Charlotte prior to the overnight back to try and lengthen the flight as much as possible and it ended up giving me perhaps a 40 minute longer flight.... Interesting perspective on day flights. As a visitor to the US from the UK previously, my preference for night flights would be to maximise the time in the US since given its normal fares, it would be difficult to say when I would be back there again. @Joe-lb8qn Жыл бұрын
This question has probably been asked before, but I'll ask it anyway as I havent seen it. You show a lot of video from security queues and the like and those areas normally have signs all over about no photography etc. Do you ever get a wrist slap (orperhaps an intimate body search) as a result of your filming in these areas? ETA when i was a frequent transatlantic traveller but nearly always in economy i used to get the aisle emergency seat if i could (my status on American helped but same issue on their planes) because of that intruding door. Im nowhere near as tall as you so in retrospect do you think that would have been a better choice?
@MattsPlanet Жыл бұрын
I film through a small camera (a DJO Osmo Action) which I attach to the strap of my backpack. So its black on black, and I often have a dark jumper / coat so its black on black on black... So it is rarely noticed and I've only been challenged once - entering the Eurostar section of St Pancras. Ironically before I was anywhere sensitive! I tend to try to get an establishing shot showing the queues or the set up without getting anything sensitive... And if I notice a sign I tend to shut down, although warnings are not as prominent as you might think... Some window seats by doors can be cramped but the 777 was ok. And I like the window to film out of - its a duller video with no window footage!

Completely agree with you on those daytime "domestic" flights to the UK, WAY better than the red eye! I remember the first time I flew "domestically" to the UK on Air Canada from Toronto it was a 8 or 9 AM daytime flight arriving into Heathrow at around 9 PM. By the time I cleared immigration, picked up my bags and got to the hotel near Ealing Broadway, it was close to midnight and I was tired enough to head to bed! By the way I consider flights to Europe domestic in terms of the distance covered. After all, a flight from Montreal to Vancouver in Canada is close to 5 hours right there so not too far off from one to Heathrow or CDG.

Three weeks ago I took the same day flight JFK-LHR in F. I made the mistake of using the only premium check in entrance I could immediately find at JFK; probably not helped by my previous day's beverage related indulgences and it being my first time in T8. They weren't checking in yet so a queue had formed inside the premium check in area. I asked if there was a separate first class, and was given the all too common information-free New York grunt. As I had printed out my own boarding card anyway, I gave up and joined the hoi polloi security line with everyone else. If only I'd known there _IS_ an F check in with a short cut into the security line. Brekkie in the Chelsea lounge was good, together with a glass of LPGS at 6 in the morning. I took a look in the Soho lounge next door, it's a lot brighter in there thanks to it outside views. There's a bit of a problem with the meals on this flight IMHO. It can't make its mind up if it's a breakfast or lunch. I'd much rathe they did a good brunch. As it stands in F it's breakfast and a light meal second service, and as you land around 19:30, I felt a bit short changed. Having said that, if you don't mind losing a day, I did enjoy the daytime flight, it was the first day flight for me transatlantic. Being able to eat on demand in F was definitely a plus, as I'd had brekkie earlier in the lounge. Thanks for sharing your economy experience, it reminds me of why I avoid it ;-)
@MattsPlanet Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for taking the time - very interesting... A flight at that time of day does drift into breakfast territory which does feel like the booby prize in a premium cabin... Good data point about the 6am LGPS - I reported on Virgin not being able to serve alcohol prior to 8am because of an NYC law, a law I don't remember applying to the BA lounge at the same airport, so this was helpful confirmation that there is something odd there!
@nezbrun872 Жыл бұрын
@@MattsPlanet It was 05:35, I just checked the picture (that any self-respecting early drinker is obliged to take) on my phone. TBF, I am pretty sure lounge staff and crew maintain a range of automated BS responses that typically and skilfully divert any possible issues of contention into no mans land. Like 'elf 'n safety innit. There's another one where sometimes they don't serve alcohol on the ground for a pre-departure beverage in certain places, but is often crew dependent rather than law dependent IME. Sometimes crew in F will serve you any drink you want as a PDB, other times it's just water, OJ & Champagne. Anyway, the last two return trips I've had in F on BA in the last couple of months, the crew have given me a nice bottle of LPGS to take home with me, not for service recovery, it just seems to be luck TBH, maybe I smile in the right way.

There's no "ranking" between Chelsea, Soho, and Greenwich. Each one is distinguishable for its uniqueness. Chelsea is known for being the artsy neighborhood. Soho is the high end luxury part of the city. And Greenwich is more of a trendy place. If BA and AA had agreed on naming the lounges based off some "ranking", the lounges might be named as Upper, Midtown, and Lower. Upper Manhattan is straight up a hood area. There is your Upper Lounge. No tourists there. Midtown is a crowded tourist-filled area, where the main shopping is done. That's the Midtown Lounge. Lower Manhattan is mainly the financial district, the heart of soul of Wall Street. I wouldn't name it the Lower Lounge, rather the Financial District Lounge.

Informative as ever - I'm persuaded by your argument in favour of a day flight in this context. Is sleeping in World Traveller Plus possible if it has to be the night flight version of the trip?

I can see how you might have drawn that conclusion from the thumbnail... Plus if you watched non-stop Dan's latest! I think you certainly can sleep on WT+ on a day flight - it'll be light in the cabin but an eyemask and a whisky should do it!

MATT, I HAD VERY VERY BAD EXPERIENCE WITH BRITISH AIRWAYS ...NEVER AGAIN OVER THERE WITH BRITISH AIRWAYS.

Feel free to share what the bad experience was - and you don't need to shout... My videos are not sponsored by the airlines and neither are they paid for by the airlines. These are not adverts, they are my opinions of the experiences I pay for.

Super annoyed to see that your breakfast included bacon. This is the same breakfast I was served on business to IST , but without the bacon.
