Flight Review Pop Quizzes: What YOU need to know!

I did my flight review with a fellow droner. By doing so, we were able to get the flight reviewer to come to us so we were on our home turf and familiar with the area and all its hazards and topography. At the outset, WE set the tone for the flight review and the reviewer was quite accommodating. When it was over, the reviewer asked for OUR recommendation so he could post our testimonials on HIS website!

I passed my advanced flight review last wednesday thanks to your videos and material. Your prep videos were very helpful. Thanks a lot. I also bought the Drone Pilot Canada app and your Flight Log excel spreadsheet which I customized a little (the spreadsheet of course) and I love them both. One question arised when I told my reviewer that I ordered a Skydio 2 : He was under the impression that these semi-autonomous drones were not permitted in Canada since they kinda fly "by themselves". What's your take on this issue? The Skydio 2 is in the list of TC approved drones for advance ops. And if their autonomous flying abilities were illegal, well, what about the DJI's Mastershots which I use often with my Air 2S - And my Mini 2's quickshots ? Thanks for any hint, I can't find an answer anywhere on this one issue.

Congratulations on passing your Flight Review, Michel! The Skydio or DJI autonomous modes are totally OK by the regulations with two provisos: you need to keep it in visual line of sight, and you need to be able to immediately take over manual control.

"Well, you're in aviation now, so you'd better know..." Oh LOL!! A couple of the local drone guys around me have that same opinion and attitude. Gatekeepers is all they are. I just started my own ground school and this is the furthest thing from how I want to be associated. Thank you Don for the absolute wealth of information you have provided to the RPAS community over the years!

It sounds like flight reviewers can act like TSA bullies who get excited from a little bit of authority. I also wonder if they are trained to be that way because they want to dominate the industry and keep the public from obtaining too much market share away from government, military and law enforcement

Thanks. I don't think they are trained that way, but it is something that happens sometimes...which is why they warn about it in the TP15395 document. It turns out, the pass rate for Flight Review is very high (sorry don't have the stats at hand...).

Love the verbal review in regards to the reviewers! Not sure if I ever will go for the Canadian Advanced RPAS Pilot Certification. Basic is good enough for me now.

I felt the same way, until I started looking at the places I was interested in flying and exploring and realizing that most of them seemed to be in controlled airspace. That and now I am pushing work to start a drone program so we can bring in another revenue stream and supply our clients with alternative inspections to the standard ones currently in use for bridges, towers, etc.
