In the original Wright Flyer, the rudder is linked with the wings warping, not contralled separately.

Not sure that "climb" and "accelerate" were part of the design requirement. It was more about making something that would just stay in the air. Looks about as easy to fly as the original would have been, at least you didn't have to bind a lever to a "hip cradle" axis :)

The actual 1903 flight did use a rail, but not a slingshot. That was only introduced later when they bought a field somewhere to continue their testing.
