(This is a redo of the original lesson) This lesson covers the 6 basic instruments in any airplane: the airspeed indicator, attitude indicator, altimeter, turn coordinator, heading indicator, and vertical speed indicator. It also briefly covers the throttle and mixture controls, as well as engine indications

Thank you for this video. I've been watching youtubers such as steveo1kinevo, Premier 1 Driver, and Corporate Pilot Life. This video is very useful and helpful with the language used in their videos. I will need to watch this video about 10 more times (slow learner), but willing to do whatever it takes to understand the lingo. Subscribed!

This is a great video for any new student. It is the best video I have found on the "sic pack" flight instruments. It is easy to understand. Thank you so much.

Wow! Amazing attention to detail. You are a great tutor! I am going the whole course...I have flown before but now I am starting to understand the plane a bit better. Did my time on single engine Piper and Cessna (many years ago) I might mention I found it easier with the plane under my butt than a Joystick on my desk, but I'm loving it - thanks to you. ;

As far as basics go with the heading indicator, if you will be doing touch and goes at an airport look at the little, in this case orange triangles, they are 90 degrees apart. A standard pattern will require 90 degree turns to the left for each leg, so when you are at the proper altitude you will turn to a heading of 270 [two seven zero], then 180, then 90, then 360 for the final leg and approach to the runway. There are five names given for each leg. As you lift off the runway you are on the upwind leg, when you make your first turn left 90 degrees is the crosswind leg, turning left 90 degrees again and you will be on the base leg, turning again 90 degrees you will be on the final leg and you should be lined up with the runway for a landing. Some airports may not want you to use a standard traffic pattern and require right turns. If not doing touch and goes there are other requirements to enter a traffic pattern or direction of flight to eventually get you lined up with the runway. The standard entrance to a pattern is about halfway in the downwind leg and have turned to the proper heading, in this case 180 degrees. The rest of the pattern will be the same as above. There is more to making a proper approach such as height above ground, air speed, landing configuration and more, which I will not go into here. I stopped watching at that point. Thank you for presenting this video regarding the use of instruments in a common flight simulator.

''when you make your first turn left 90 degrees is the crosswind leg, turning left 90 degrees again and you will be on the base leg, turning again 90 degrees you will be on the final leg and you should be lined up with the runway for a landing'' No, after the 2nd turn, you're in the downwind leg (you forgot that one), then base leg, then lined up with landing runway.

I have built and flown many RC model planes and helicopters, and recently been interested in watching actual ATC and aircraft recordings ....this type of video is a great help in understanding what instruments the pilot is looking at inside the aircraft ...I may even pick up a computer flight sim program and some type of compatible yoke controller...any recommendations for a beginner ?....thanks much.......

Hi, I’m trying to find the best flight training video series here on KZbin and so far so good with yours. I’ve watched many videos from others including Steveo Kinevo who do a fine job of narrating their flights. I registered on fly8ma and I found it difficult to navigate their website. Their first lesson is to analyze a Houston plane crash. Where I live it costs $7000 to learn to fly. I’m somewhat poor and don’t have that sort of money yet smart enough to figure out a lot on my own. I’d prefer to learn everything online as much as possible in order to take the test.

That is a great strategy - learn as much online as possible. If motivated, you cab also study for and pass your written test prior to lessons. The way to go to save $$$

Great video, but I have a question. At about the 9:20 mark in your video, you see a message in X-Plane that says the directional gyro is not aligned with magnetic north. Does this refer to the alignment of the heading indicator to the magnetic compass or something else? I ask because by this point you had already made that adjustment, and I have not found anyone else online that explains what needs to be done when you see that message. Thanks!
@flighttrajectory
@flighttrajectory 6 жыл бұрын
Hey John, sorry for the late reply; The heading indicator works with a spinning gyroscope, which is NOT slaved to magnetic north. As such, you have to manually adjust the heading indicator to match with the magnetic compass. The gyroscopic heading indicator is more stable than the compass (the compass is prone to a number of errors when you're flying in any manner except straight and level flight), and thus easier to use for navigation. But since it isn't slaved to the compass, you have to periodically adjust it to keep it aligned with the compass. X-Plane defaults with the 2 lined up, but you see in my video that when I started moving the heading indicator, it became "misaligned" with the magnetic compass, triggering a warning from X-Plane. All I needed to do was turn it back the other way to match up with the compass.
