Please checkout out our android space simulator app called Curiosity. It's lets you send spacecraft to all of the inner planets of the solar system from earth.
It also lets you land the Curiosity rover on Mars going through the 7-Minutes of Terror.

I worked at a startup rocket company (many, many, many years ago), and recall discussions with Range Safety. They were freaked out because we had a solid booster. Up until then, the Range Safety would on occasion press the Command Destruct button on rockets with hydrazine and such as a propellant. This would cause the vehicle to explode into billions, and billions of very small bits. With our rocket, which was about 60 in diameter and 60 ft long or so, weighed about 40,000 lbs, we could only "cut it up" or Command Destruct explode it into 3 or four very large, heavy pieces. For reference, our rocket is now used in the Virgin Galactic spaceplane.

The fact that manned missions have had flight termination systems has always given me chills. I really feel for the officer who was on duty for the Challenger launch.

Yeah. I read somewhere that some of the astronauts would show the pictures of their kids to the Range Safety Officer before boarding the shuttle. I'm thinking it was a subtle way of letting them know to "think" before pressing that button.

Why do you "feel for the officer who was on duty for the Challenger launch"??? The range safety officer (RSO) played no role in the destruction of the orbiter. The space shuttle orbiter did not have destruct devices. Only the solid rocket boosters (SRBs) and external tank had such flight termination devices. The breakup of the vehicle began at T+73.162 seconds (at altitude: 48,000 ft). The Challenger orbiter broke apart due to excessive aerodynamic forces following the disintegration of the external fuel tank. Once separated from the spacecraft, the SRBs were unguided and their propulsion could not be stopped. At T+110.250, the RSO activated the flight termination system on board both solid rocket boosters.

@@guardrailbiter I feel bad for the fact that the officer was on duty during a mission where there was loss of life, which must have been an excruciating experience.

Cool video again, and fab animation. I never realised that blowing up a rocket was so intricate, but I suppose it stands to reason. As long as I don't have to be the guy that makes the decision.

I didn't realize that either that there was more to it until I started the research. I read somewhere that shuttle astronauts would sometime talk to the range safety officer before launch and show them pictures of their kids. I guess this is maybe to make then analyze the situation just a little bit more before pressing the button.

Yeah me too. I can't imagine the fallout(no pun intended) that NASA has to deal with if the launch vehicle along with the payload is lost.

How about going from New York to Tokyo for vacation in a vehicle with the chemical potential energy of a small nuke and requires a FTS?

Well the payload version of Starship might have FTS, cuz it's payload. But you can't put the FTS on a human rated starship.
