The opposite happened to my budgies .. I got a couple .. I trained them then the female died out of fatty liver .. I bought another female and she is very wild and loves to fly every where .. she taught the male to be wild and fly .. as soon as they wake up they fly all day untill 5 they enter the cage and sleep .. they even fly just over my head or around me while doing my work .. but never on my hand

I had a clipped budgie, he was the best out of all my birds in flight training. I could put my hand on the ground across the room, he would see my hand and run to it, he descended super well and going up. He also loved to go upside down so I taught him to flip. Sadly he passed away about 3 months ago😞

So once he flies over if we just keep putting him back on the perch for food he gets frustrated. He will start crushing up the millet and throwing it just so we can pick him up. He doesn't fully get it yet.

My parrotlet Teddy flew out of our bedroom the other day while I was cooking and my husband was standing in the bedroom doorway for a second too long. We have very high ceilings so he was just soaring through the air all over and we were senselessly trying to raise our hands up as if that would make a difference. We have two cats, they are quite used to our birds but, yeah... they're cats. Thankfully they did not seem to notice a tiny bird flitting around like the snitch in Harry Potter. Anyway, recall is great, we should get it sometime.

@@katmarrs7054 Lilly wasn't too hard to train. I withhold sunflower seeds from her food, and only give them as special treats (bulk, raw, shelled). She goes nuts for them so it is easy to get her to step wherever I want by holding a seed just out of her reach. If I'm holding the seed for her, it takes 3 bites to finish. I also tap my finger next to the seed if I need to get her attention. Now the tapping is a nonverbal come hither. You can PM if you have questions. I'm no expert, but I have experience. Best of luck with your little guy!

ok, so from the info in this, I'm thinking one of my rescues was definitely a wild bird in a former life. Has been stuck in a tiny cage for years, cage open all the time now, mostly stays inside it, but on occasion gets freaked out or otherwise flies & when he does he can hover & absolutely control height & braking. I was tending towards thinking born a wild bird already because of this, but hearing that if not trained in it they can't do it makes me absolutely convinced he must have had a wild life at some point. I wasn't sure how much was instinct & how much was learnt/practiced. Thanks :)

Love all your videos, so thank you. We have a gorgeous 8 year-old green-cheeked conure named Dali, toilet trained and speaks well. I've tried not wing clipping, but he hates it if we go outside without him, is joyful when we go out even to put the rubbish out! He's flown in a circle back to us when startled by a noise, once lifted by wind into a tree, but yelled, "here, here." when I called out hysterically, "Dali where are you?" I'd like to flight train him more, would like to know what is a healthier treat to give him other than sunflower seeds, apple and raw oats I'm presently using. Thanks, Toni.

As a horse trainer I like to think of training as exercise yes but I would rather they get a lot of it from their daily play and turn out. I call it sneaky exercise. So if one needs more muscle in the hind end for stops then I would turn them out in the hilly pasture. If I want them to get more stamina and acceleration then I put them out with the one who will instigate play the most or chase them around. I try to turn out with mixes of instigators and bums so that they instigators (who tend to be more reactive) learn some stability and the bums get more exercise. For birds this would apply in the way of if your bird wants to be in the same room with you, you could sneak exercise on them by stand placement so that they have to do certain things to be able to get to the stand to hang out with you. Or If reactive they have two stand one near the busiest window and one further away so that they fly between when startled and then put them back after awhile. (also desensitizes.) An example of sneaky exercise in cats was one who was super over weight but liked to be in the top of the tree so I would put them down on the ground a few time in the day so they would get exercise from climbing up.

Thank you for emphasizing the importance of flight. I believe that exercise plays a huge role in our pets' wellbeing. Yet, diet and toys are invariably put in the forefront while exercise takes a back seat. If one cannot participate in free flight with their birds, one needs to find another solution. I encourage my 5 budgies to fly a LOT: see "Are Your Birds Getting Enough Exercise?"

any tips on how to get a lazy bird to actually do the flying? One of mine can, but he just has no interest in it. I managed to get him flying back & forward between 2 perch stands for a little while, but then I think maybe he got sore the next day from the flying or something, cause he looked like he was enjoying it & wanting to do more, then he just suddenly turned & decided "nope, not doing that anymore, if you put them close enough for me to jump I'll do it, otherwise I'll just go & watch tv or sit in front of the tv & wait for you to turn it on for me to watch". He's a bit of a fatty & I'm trying to get some weight off him right now & diet's hard, cause my other one literally cries for hours when hungry & this one seems to be able to get fat even eating just lettuce, so I figured I'd do exercise to get the weight down that way, but dam little couch potato won't do it, so any tips appreciated!

@@mehere8038 For this lack of motivation, you need more treat power! You must find a treat that motivates (with my budgies it is spray millet) and you should thereafter EXCLUDE the treat from the regular diet completely and use it only for training.

@@CVersailles they're lorikeets, can be challenging to really find good options that don't take them ages to eat. I've actually switched now & about 80% of their nectar mix they only get if they train (with 2 seperate dishes to make sure they get even amounts). They seem just as interested in working for that as for anything else. Training food they get in a syringe & they really enjoy the syringe & the "good girl" & attention that goes with it & honestly I can put prettywell anything in the syringe & they'll enjoy it & see it as a treat BUT there's either massive fights between the pair of them over food/training/treats to the point that it's really problematic to work with either of them as they attack the other to get to it, or they've had enough food that they'll choose if they want to train or not & fatty goes lazy. I'm also btw giving them only 3/4 of a scoop of food a day right now total, along with about 1/6th of an apple between them (plus lettuce & other leafy greens to shred/play with/eat) everything says that in captivity they're supposed to have about 1.5 scoops a day plus half an apple each, so it's not like they're eating huge amounts. I've given up on the flight training again for now & am focusing on the accepting my finger over the head/working towards patting/scratching, I'm thinking maybe if wanting that more he might be more willing to fly to follow me around to get attention, dunno, I"m just trying lots of things, open to any ideas. I did have grape juice previously for training btw, they only ever get that with training, but I switched to their regular food in a syringe for training to try to help with weight control & honestly they're just as motivated with that as they were with the grape juice (grape being their favourite, I've done apple & others as well & they work for them almost as well, but like grape a little better)

@@mehere8038 I see... I have very little experience with lories, so I will pass on further advice. Perhaps the Bird Tricks experts can help you out. There is definitely one positive though: giving them medication with a syringe if they fall ill will not be a problem for you..

instead of my budgies being hand fobic there shoulder fobic so they just come to my hand naturally since there more comfortable on my hand or palm. my budgies are clipped at the moment because they where clipped when i got them but i found a tail feather and... a WING FEATHER today on the table where they had been preening so YAY they will hopefully be getting some non clipped flight feathers coming in sooner or later!!!

Great video! 😊 Do you have any tips to avoid birds flying into windows? We have quite a lot of big windows without the opportunity to close curtains or anything like that. We’ve put pieces of paper on the windows but he still flies into them.

That scares me... it is dangerous to freefly small birds for MANY reasons. One, they could get lost and you will never find them, also they have really quiet contact calls. Two, they could get eaten by a larger bird. If another bird outside decides to attack it, lets say a hawk, it will not survive. That is why it is not recommended to freefly them.

@@derind9191 a larger bird is a larger Target for a hawk to see and then catch. He is whistle trained so he can hear me from more than mile away. Also the Hawk that is territorial of my farm is primarily interested in the abundance of squirrels and if she runs out of those I have free-ranging chickens that are probably next on her list but she has never taken one. The budgerigar has 65,000,000 million years of experience to rely on when spotting and out maneuvering birds of prey and is also too small to make a meal out of...compared to rabbits squirrels pigeons doves Etc.

You may well have great recall, and “think”that the predator risk is minimal(birds of prey aren’t the only predators btw. Mynahs, magpies or crows will kill small birds. Dogs, cats, rats snakes and large lizards, and depending on where you live most small mammals will also take small birds), however you can’t control the weather. A sudden wind gust can blow a little bird like a budgie way, WAY off course. It can also slam it into a wall or window and severely injure if not outright kill it. It’s your bird but I’m a motorcyclist too, and I don’t think these things equate to the scare stories about bikes at all, but the risk is yours. Thing is it’s all good, till it’s not.

How do you train a bird to not land in a tree? I’m teaching my parrot to fly indoors and he’s doing great but one of the things that worries me is if he’ll look for a tree to rest in after a flight when we eventually take it outdoors

Love this! I was trying to figure out flight training for my own budgie and I was having a little trouble. Quick question, I saw there was a video about the geo cage that Blue uses, but I don’t see that video on the channel anymore. Do you no longer recommend it? Currently looking for a new cage for my budgie.

Hi I’ve got a question I’ve had my budgie for 3 months now and she only flies on top of the cupboards and curtain rail (high places), I’ve taught her to step up and down on my hand using millet but only when she is around her cage, but when she leaves it she won’t come near the lower surfaces or me. I try using millet to lure but she backs away from it when she is high up. Any tips on getting her to come to me while she is free flying or to even get her to come lower down on the surfaces? Thank you for your videos so helpful.
