I had a screaming conure that I "inherited" from a roommate. She was the loudest bird I've ever lived with and I got her to cool it the same way, ignoring her until she was quiet for a minute or two, then showing lots of affection and positive reinforcement. Stretched it out to 5 minutes before I acknowledged it, and after a month or two, she was the quietest bird I've ever lived with! She'd call to me softly when she woke up and only screamed when another conure in the same apartment building got going. She was getting on in age when I got her, had been passed from owner to owner until she came with me when I moved out. I had her for 5 years, really don't know how old she was. My little Peanut was such a joy, she gave me the bird bug, I've had at least one ever since. I've only had cockatiels for 30+ years (current ones are 12), seeing Widget makes me want another "big little" bird! I bet my two tiels would wonder how that weird looking tiel got so big! 😂
@richardadams49283 жыл бұрын
My 11 year old cockatiel Baby is very loving towards my conure Skittles, but Skittles is ALWAYS in his cage when Baby is out. Skittles is rambunctious and playful and LOVES to "wrassle", but he plays rough, including some vigorous play biting. He could easily hurt or even kill Baby unintentionally.

And my cockatiel is just as sweet.

Widget screaming reminds me of dogs I’ve worked with that have separation anxiety. Where they will bark and cry and carry on until you give them that attention they think they need. It’s difficult to teach any animal with reinforced separation anxiety to “break” the bad habit and it can be so exhausting. I know it’s not their fault and they don’t know any better but I can’t imagine trying to help them out of that habit with an animal as intelligent as a parrot! I wish you the best in helping her out of that anxious mindset! She is such a sweet bird from what I can see in this video! I love watching and learning different training techniques and how they can even help other animal trainers to understand and work with their animal! You are truly an amazing person and your videos are so helpful and informative! ❤️(edit: also your children are so sweet with the birds it makes me cry! It reminds me so much of myself when I was little and raising chickens😭)

If that's how you really feel, that might be a good instinct, but know that people online fear-monger A LOOOOT. I remember when I was on dog forums some years back, and I had nearly convinced myself to never get a dog again, because the people there have such impossibly high standards, if you're anything less than perfect, you're a "terrible owner" - at least that's how they make you feel. And with parrots it's even worse, because they have this huge "they are terrible pets and should really all be in the wild"-image. Well they're not terrible pets or millions of people wouldn't own them, but they ARE high-maintenance.

@@rosiehawtrey oh lol, I didn’t realize that this was a snake. I thought it was a species of bird.
