CORRECTION! The graphic for the Grace VanderWaal Signature ukulele was cut off. It has a glossy finish to look like walnut, but it is laminate sapele.

I love the side-by-side comparison, that was REALLY helpful!!! I always wished I'd have stuck with the ukulele (any stringed instrument, really) when we learned in gradeschool back in the seventies. Pianos are great, but not portable ;) So, at 55, I just began to learn ukulele again, and am watching you and Bernadette. I just received the Flight TUS35 I bought for my (now 20 months old) grandson. I'll be keeping it a few years yet, breaking it in and all. I'm a beginner player myself, but by the time he's ready to learn I'll be okay. Question: Of course I'm having to tune it every five minutes because it's brand-new (they ship them with the strings basically just ON there, apparently, no stretching done at all) and as I tighten the strings, I'm finding the E string is not going to have enough room to tighten much more (it's beginning to overlap the previous wrap, making a second 'layer' if you will). Please tell me I don't have to try to remove that string and trim it a bit shorter so it won't do that any more... What do you think? (and thank you for your help, here if you have time to answer, and for your videos that are so in-depth!)

I really do like it. I actually have it with me right now on a weekend trip.
@evanssm1

I actually bought two of these yesterday: I originally intended to buy only one as a gift for the son of a friend who will shortly be nine years old althoughI've no idea if he'll like it enough to want to learn how to play. I wanted to get him something affordable that wouldn't hold him back if he was interested in playing. I did notice how sharp the frets felt on some of the other budget instruments that I tried and I didn't realise until I saw your video that this was a common issue with ukes (presumably they are made in hot countries and the wood shrinks). There's definitely nothing protruding on the flight instrument. My main reason for buying the Flight Travel uke was the plastic construction. I thought that it might turn out to be more child resistant than the average uke, so it's more likely to still be around on a year or two. The top has a matt finish, which I think probably helps with the sound. One thing that I didn't notice you mention in the video was the mock grain texture on the neck which might not be to the liking of some people. I also thought that it was strange that, given that it is plastic, the manufacturers should have gone for a fake maple colour on the neck. The fingerboard doesn't feel like plastic at all. Having got one for my young friend, I realised that I'd probably end up getting saddled with teaching him the basics and, as I've never even held a uke before yesterday, I thought I'd better try and learn something about them myself so, about thirty minutes later I went back to the shop and got the same model for myself. In my case, the child resistance of the instrument was less of an issue so my choice was based purely on the feel (no "razor neck" was a big plus) and the tone of the instrument - although I didn't realise how good the sound was until I saw the comparisons in the video. I've had a fun day playing with my new uke (thanks also to the video, I now know that uke arm is something that is not unique to me!). I've already picked up a few chords and have enjoyed strumming away to classics such as "Tonight you belong to me" as well as a few modern 3 chord wonders and I'm getting my head around the standard high g tuning, which really messed with my head when I was trying out the instruments in the store, so hopefully, I should be able to set my young friend in the right direction when I give him his instrument tomorrow. Although I put quite a bit of thought into getting this as a gift, in the case of the instrument that I got for myself it was more of an impulse purchase. I have quite large hands and although I find I'm OK at the nut end, I think things would start to feel cramped once I go beyond the 3rd fret. So, if I end up getting interested in the uke, I'd probably end up going for a concert, or even larger scale, instrument but i would probably have to pay a lot more for a larger scale instrument with an equivalent sound. So, I'd recommend this for anyone who wants an instrument for traveling, or, an instrument that would stand up to a lot of abuse (ideal for a child taking the instrument to and from school). Because of the surprisingly good sound I'd also recommend this as an instrument for anyone who wants to dip their toes into the water and find out what ukuleles are all about.

@@OneMusicSchool : - I’m glad that my comments were appreciated. Both I and my friend’s son are still having a lot of fun with our ukuleles although I’ve moved on from the TUS35 and I’ve now got a whole family of ukuleles - hopefully, over the next few days I’ll be posting some comments on some of your other videos as some of the experiences, both good and not so good, that I’ve had in acquiring my new family relate to some of the of the other instruments that you’ve reviewed. Over the last few months I’ve spent a lot of time exploring my inner virtuosity (although, at this stage, I’m still keeping my virtuosity very much on the inside :-) ): I’ve been working on some of the early pieces in James Hill’s “Duets For One” and I’ve got one or two other tunes in an almost recognisable form as well :-). Now I’ve spent a lot more time playing other ukuleles (will I ever feel my fingers again?). I find that I can manage to do most of what I can on a larger instrument on the TUS35. I am able to play further up the neck than I originally thought I’d be able to although, although, more often than not, barred chords higher up the neck come across slightly muffled because I my finger is fatter than the space between the frets. (the result sounds OK but doesn’t stand up to scrutiny). If I get the same result on a larger instrument, at least I know it’s because I’m rubbish. :-) One thing I’ve noticed is that the silver paint on the frets on the TUS35 wears off quite quickly - My one looks almost fretless up as far as the 5th fret and the paint on the frets on the E and A strings has pretty much gone up to the 8th or 10th fret. This is only a cosmetic thing as it's only the paint that's worn away and, to my mind, a bit of honest wear and tear adds character to any instrument (whereas, if you take a chunk out of the gloss on your new… whatever on day one, that is just sad :-( ). Also for any parents thinking of getting one of these for a child who’s learning, the disappearing paint “feature” is a good way to tell whether your child has been practising :-). Although he’s always keen to play when I visit, and he is picking things up quite quickly, I’ve noticed that my young friend’s TUS35 remains in pristine condition - my only regret is that I gave him the best looking one :-).

I have had a Flight TU35 for 6 months (in black). It really is the perfect travel uke. Mine spent a month travelling in my campervan around Europe in 90+ degree heat . The action and intonation is great and it sounds fab. I even performed a little gig with it. Mine did come with a sturdier bag which was a massive bonus as I wasn't expecting it. My only, slightly less positive, observations are that strings did seem to take a little while to settle and the silver paint(?) on the plastic frets has worn off but neither of those are a problem. I've been practicing All You Need Is Love on it this week :-)

What??? It was just a joyous moment, which I know is funny, because I am just one more fan of yours, but there you have it. (Fyi, closer and closer to pulling the trigger on ordering an Enya Nova U for the waterproof element...I also teach paddleboard and need one that is even safer on the water for this waterbaby...but trying to hold myself back until the other arrives...because adulting & self-control? ;-)) Anyway, you are wonderful, thank you!

I absolutely love the design. The color and finish is just beautiful, the gold hardware is so unique, I have never seen another ukulele with those features, and I love the pickup and built in tuner. I think the sound is great, very smooth and sweet. I love Grace’s signature on the back. It was a cute personal touch. I know some people do not the like the telecaster head stock on the acoustic instruments, but I think it makes it look unique and iconic. I also noticed the ease of tuning the strings because of the design. I was also lucky enough to get to play it in store before purchasing and that made the experience even better. I think it is a great ukulele for the intermediate to expert player or a beginner who already plays a similar instrument (guitar). I think price is very reasonable considering the quality of the instrument, the quality of the gig bag, and the 3 month free subscription to Fender play.

I have a Ovation guitar, it has a plastic round shape back, top spruce wood, the neck is plastic with a metal fret board, frets and fret board from one single item, purchased it years ago because I didn’t want weather changes to it. So this has been used before. The interesting things about Ovations is they can mathematically predict the sound by slightly changing the round shape back. My model is more bass sounding. Glen Campbell used to play one, well a $$$ model over my circa 1980 $350 one, they lost a little favor because they are a little harder to play sitting down, the round back, given the size of it.

The one chord, with letting the sustain ring was great. I closed my eyes and let the sound influence me not the name brand or tone woods. It's bright and loud. It has a crispness that is close to my Kala EM tenor. Excellent details in your review of this Flight uku. Playing on a boat, enjoying a sunny lake, and smiley days. @@OneMusicSchool As I'm inquisitive, you can never put to much information in your reviews. You answered everything I could think of, and more! You have a natural talent and the God given skills of an amazing teacher Katie. Your excellent sound comparison is why I bought 2 of these Flight TUS 35's. One lovely blue just like yours and am elegant Black one. Looking around the internet one store had $55us shipping. Kremonausa had $20us shipping, so I could afford to buy two:) I'm experimenting by tuning one 432Hz and the other 440Hz. This video is the best of all the ones reviewing the Flight TUS35. My ears thank you Katie. Happy musical days🙌

Thanks for the review. I found the sound comparisons particularly useful as, apart from the first one (which looked toy-like), I think the others were all concerts, yet the Flight sounded good compared to them- not better but good enough.

I have a Sakura Flight Uke. It's nice; VERY bright-sounding. I did have to change the strings though ( I would like to note that). The original factory strings made this sound when your fingers would roll off of them; it was akin to running your fingers on glass or nails on a chalkboard (only not as egregious). The squeaking sound was too much to ignore during softer songs that I would fingerpick so I replaced them with some Martin Fluorocarbon Stings. I hope you'll get to review one of the electric ukuleles they just released. Also, also: I wish the Soprano sized ones came with strap buttons (amiright?!)

Great review thank you. I watched it because I thought it was a ukulele that could somehow fit in hand luggage for flights!! Taking on a musical instrument is expensive here in Europe, might be different over there ... I travel back and to from France to the UK occasionally .. like next week .. The replacement will be arriving in three days (hope it's not defective) along with a Kala KA-STGE-C. They'll bring my UAS up to 7, including two Kanile'as. Hi Katie :-) (I hope I got your name right) First, I would like to praise your channel, lot of great content, I espetially enjoy unboxing videos among tutorials :-) So, I actually got this ukulele this monday! :-) Well, not exactly this one, but the Flight TUS50. I am not really entirely sure what is different on it, except of the top which is not painted to one colour and has this cool lyzard ornaments around the soundhole, other than that, the same size, 15 frts, zero fret, the same materials and so on, maybe you're gonna be able to tell more of the difference but I doubt there is anything else different other than the top: instagram.com/p/BoroEJFnyAg/?taken-by=peter_tho8 So, I started learning ukulele about two months ago, I mean I got my first way back but kind of id not get to it until recently, and I can tell you, I am totally in love with it, with it's voice and how much revarding it is. I love to travel a lot and I would like to be taking my instrument with me. And I wouldn't dare to take my concert uke to the plane or to the cabin or camping trip.. so I got the Flight TUS50. After two days playing it a lot I can say that it is amazing how well the tuning holds after such short time for a new instrument. I love how low the action is and I find it's voice very warm. I can let you know after I'll take it with me to a trip for the first time :-)

It's hard to judge the sound from the travel clips or from an individual chord. We'd get a better sense of the sound if you had played a short song in studio where you have control of the audio.
@OneMusicSchool
@OneMusicSchool 6 жыл бұрын
Good suggestion. I think my studio is pretty comparable to others. I"m using a RODES shotgun mic that is only inches away from my face and the instrument and it's running through my soundboard (Zoom). I'm not using the camera audio at all. To keep it simple, consistent, and concise, I played just one open chord.
