Simply the best online ground school courses there are. I learn as much from these courses and videos as I do actually flying with my CFII.

amazing! I trained in a g1000 from pvt-commercial and now that I'm in multi all of the planes are 6 pack g430. This video nailed all of my questions I had. Thanks!

I'm returning to IFR after a 30-year break. All the GPS stuff is "new". This video specifically, but your videos generally, have been so helpful! I've watched this one 3 times over the last three months, and I finally understand it!

Actually Garmin needs many many tutorials on line starting from the simple to complex. Who wants to rent aircraft and sit on the ground for hours trying to figure these devices out. Garmin wake-up!

You are commenting on a 20 year old product, from a time when people learned to fly ifr without a computer.. Current garmin's with touchscreen are way more intuitive. That being said, IFR flying with such a device requires training anyhow, it is not the same as buying an iPhone in the store and navigate your car.

I enrolled in your IFR ground course based on videos like this. It is GOLD. Your real-world-scenario based videos are hands down the best thing I have found on the market. And, funny, I have always struggles with G430/530 buttonology, since my PPL training days. That's why I rent a plane with a 650. :)

This is what I've been looking for for months!!! So simple when you know it, but so alien until you do. Thanx! About the only thing I can think of that could make your vids better, would be to make your mouse cursor bigger.. Help draw our attention to where your eyes are at, especially on predominantly white screens, like when you're explaining plates. Love your work!! (Also, you seem very comfortable with MSFS, so maybe you could do a video on how to get the most out of it as a training device? I know there's a lot of sim specific guys on KZbin, but your explanations are on point, and you could target people like me who just want to learn enough about the sim to enhance their GA, without bogging down on the tech side of the sim itself)

Thanks for the 530. Now do it again for the 430 😝. Seriously though, that vectors to final thing takes some getting used to. I guess the whole thing takes a bit of getting used to. Enter vs knob press, inner vs outer. The sim is a great resource for getting familiar for cheap.

Very nice instructions, I didn't have a hope trying to do this via hunt and peck (believe me I tried). Since I live in Hagerstown, MD, I may try the exact flight in your video.

Would it not also have been easier to use the activate leg method in the 2nd example rather than deleting something? Or is this because you have to fly past the fix at the hold?
@1dullgeek2 жыл бұрын
I caught two differences that you pointed out between the 430/530 series and later gps models: On 430/530: 1) Don't do vectors transition. 2) Don't activate vectors to final. I see that there's another video that you covered why to do this. Does the issue mentioned in that video also apply to later model GPS's like the GPS175 (or that type of GPS)? There are other terms that might be helpful to understand. The one that trips me up is when the GPS says: "Remain Suspended" vs "Activate Missed Approach" I generally understand which one to choose. If I'm flying the published missed, then I choose "activate missed approach". But if I'm flying an amended missed approach - which is often the case in instrument training - then I choose "remain suspended". I eventually reprogram the flight plan for the next approach after that. But it'd be nice to understand what that specific wording means. As it is, it's very confusing.
@Jacob-qu8kj2 жыл бұрын
Logic wise the GPS175 operates the same as the GTN650/750 series. Even on the newer GPS units (GTN750) Garmin does not recommend loading vectors to final when told to expect - only when cleared - as loading without a transition means you'll need to reload the entire approach while at any time you can activate VTF. Instead you should choose the most appropriate transation then when cleared activate VTF. Remain Suspended means that the GPS will no longer take you to the next waypoint and instead will hold you on an extended line that's drawn from the FAF to the Missed Approach Point. (Effectly extending the approach path) You'll do this when you land so you can use other functions on the GTN, or when you go missed but for whatever reason want to continue on the flight path for a non standard missed approach procedure. Think of normal routing as A-B-C and suspending that means you'll go from A---- just stright line to nowhere

Speak a little incorporating the Vertical Navigation segment? I use it but not sure if is only a planning function or is integrated to function incorporated (once setup) automatically with decent and assent maneuvers during departures and arrivals? Or maybe it is only a static calculator for determining glide paths for vertical decents/climbs? Thanks!

Using the 430, I've had a controller tell me to stay in the published hold at the IAF for a couple laps before proceeding inbound. Sometimes it'll take me straight in without doing the hold. Sometimes it'll do a lap then take me in. Sometimes it'll keep in the hold forever and never take me in. It usually ends up with me frantically trying to reload the approach to get it to do what I want How do I control when to stay in the hold or continue?
@firepilot1092 жыл бұрын
Just press the SUSP button (OBS button actually). You will stay in the hold forever, until you press the button again. That's it! But not sure it is working correctly on the sim, but in the real plane that is how we do it in holding pattern.
@scottwillson55628 ай бұрын
it has been my experience of late that just activating vectors to final does not swap the required ILS frequency to active from standby. do you have to always select activate approach? i’ve heard of over the years that once you activate a leg on the approach it’s activated the approach, is that true? really appreciate the effort you put into these!

We're using an add-on for the simulator here, from Working Title. It makes it function much closer to how it does in real life, but I haven't tried the OBS function like this yet.

I have tried in both XP 11 and 12 to change the map orientation and when I press menu button on my sim, nothing happens, just clicks, no menu pops up. I really would like to practise with correct buttonology. I am a licensed pilot and fly 650/750’s no problem but not proficient in the older units and need to be.

I think it is xplane, in msfs c172 only for deluxe or premium deluxe users, I have it and I bought from justflight a "near study level" c172 with both Garmins, it's perfect, like for example steam gauge caravan very good too.

Anyone who does not put the airplane on the screen facing in the direction of flight is wrong. You want waypoints and other navigation fixes to be oriented left and right of the nose, just as you would see them by looking out of the cockpit windows.
