FLIGHTSCAN - FM radio bandscan on aeroplane!

Airborne FM DXing - on a plane! FM radio stations from 14 countries accross Europe received on my flight from Warsaw to Malta (20.04.2016). Received & recorded with a portable mp3-player Creative MuVo Zen with earphone cord as an "antenna".

On my flights from Germany to Indonesia I can always pick up stations from Pakistan, India, and others. It is a super fascinating and fun way of spending your time on a plane.This is the first video on the topic that I have found so far.

Pewnego sierpniowego wieczora podczas lotu z Gdańska do Luton też wpadłem na taki pomysł. Ostatnią słuchaną stacją było RMF FM na częstotliwości 98,4 z chwaszczyna. Odpaliłem radio gdzieś nad krajem związkowym Szlezwik-Holsztyn. Pierwsze co usłyszałem to właśnie jingiel rmf. W tym momencie radio bardzo dobrze odbierało ale z czasem coraz słabszy odbiór aż w pewnym momencie musiałem prawie cały kabel trzymać przy samej szybie.

Glad you enjoy it. I think there could be Romanian stations if I sat at the opposite window, in row on the eastern side. Almost all stations I picked here were from the west, received through the window I was sitting at.

Radios, personal audio, walkmans, mp3players were not forbidden - not by the time I recorded this two years ago. But recently I noticed they are more strict about the batteries...

At least in the United States, use of radios in flight is not allowed. The safety card found on commercial airplanes lists radios among the items that one is not permitted to use.

@@pizzaface4079 Traditionally, the local oscillator in FM receivers operated at 10.7 MHz above the received frequency. This meant that when used in the upper part of the band, the radio emitted a signal in the band that aircraft use for navigation or communication.

How were you able to determine the exact station?

It wasn't all that difficult. As you could hear, many stations give their ID on air. And if not, for somebody experienced like me, it poses not much problem. There are few factors - language, transmitter power (you mostly take into account high power transmitters), stations programme format and so on, and so on. Combining all - if you noted down the frequency, and you have transmitter maps, your search narrows down to the searched station. Hope you have a chance to try it out too! It's great fun. Good luck!
