You've done a good thing Brent, a lot of adventurers will be grateful for you taking the time to show how its done. There were a couple of nifty ideas I picked up from you. One was not having to spend an hour or two every night downloading to external drives while my friend was out in the bar mixing it up. That 3 tier folding sd card holder although expensive saves not only valuable time but bulk as well. When I built the AT the premise was I would be doing deserts and remote places etc. I wanted no power coming directly from the battery. Things like my Oxford heated grips turn off automatically if I pull up for more than 5 mins. Even that was triggered by the ignition. I snap my gps onto a permanently wired mount. I had another wire with a waterproof cap system stationed near the front of my Givi tank bag. A quick connection to that powers a 3 port usb outlet, which in turn powers a 3 battery gopro charger. Another charges a 30000ah battery bank which can charge my 13" laptop. There is a cigarette lighter up in the dash area reminding me what a good Idea of yours having the different power plug ins for your gear. I have a small battery bank which goes in my pocket to run my chin gopro. We have very similar systems and it takes time and thought to evolve. I was squirming a bit watching some of the footage your gopro was taking of the front wheel. I cracked two lens covers doing that, but hey sometimes its necessary. I know I have mentioned not fancying the 360 stuff, although using it as a not too wide conventional view has good potential. Viewing your material is a satisfying experience because your footage is natural as the eye sees it and not too wide, and coupled with well chosen music flows nicely. Safe riding friend and as always, I look forward to your next creation.

Hey Kiwi adventurer. You make some good points. I agree that there is no "right setup".... as everybody shoots a bit differently. For example, I use a Media Mod because I want an external mic to pick up the motorbike sounds, so I can't power the gopro externally while it is in the mod. Your point about the low-down camera angle... I hear you. I won't use that while doing normal riding, but I did see a great use of Insta360 by Dan (DK Adv) which I'm going to link to in my 3rd video. He has convinced me to try the Insta360 mounted down low above the gear. It actually does 3 really good shots from that angle. I'm glad you are finding my videos useful. Cheers. BP

Top quality, AGAIN. Got some good inspiration for camera angles. I’m also glad I’m not the only one who takes LOADS of spare mounts for every kinda situation.😂 I’m also not a fan of the insta 360 after investing in it myself. Some of the angles you can get are great, but even if filmed in 5k, the reframed images look so poor when next to the go pro.

Thanks Brent. You have answered so many of my questions. Love the extender arms as well as the Pro Shot mount. I am looking to put a 'proper' power outlet on the GSA to charge the drone etc. Any ideas on how to do this? I also like to charge the Go Pro while riding, just reduces the need for continually changing batteries. I do that with my Sena as I find the battery only lasts half a day when filming. Hi Mike, on the GS, the way I had it setup was I ran a cigarette lighter adapter from the SAE plug and put it into my tank bag. Something like this one. YOu need to splice the cable for SAE.. then it plugs into the bike near the seat and cable runs up into tank bag. In the tank bag you plug in the high wattage adapter to power the drone batteries. Brent, where did you find the pouch for holding your beacon? Also, do you use a GoPro 9 or 10? If so, where did you find the multi battery charger? Also maybe the link for the high voltage charger you plug in. I leave in three weeks from today from North Carolina to do the IDBDR. Then on to the Arctic Circle. 16,000 mile ride. Thanks

Thanks for the detailed explanation Brent, I learned a lot. It looks that this journey was special for you and not just in terms of production and mental preparation. it's amazing series, I didn't skip a second. A few questions as a rookie in the gopro world: I shoot with a gopro 8 and after an 1.5 hour at 2.7K resolution and high bitrate the battery runs out. so...-on a 6-10 hours riding day you use 4-6 different batteries? (edit: found the charger) BTW your recommendation for the 3:4 ratio is very useful for me.

Hey Dror, No, I don't leave my GoPro running. I have it set up for Quick Capture, so that I can just hit the button, it will power on and start recording in a couple of seconds... and then again it stops recording and powers down. So I'm only grabbing highlights when I ride. I would typically go through 2-3 GoPro batteries on a day's ride.

Brent, What a great video, you have really refined your set up and I think this really illustrates how you, as a Creator, can produce great content without a mirrorless rig. I think you mentioned that you were going to shoot more of this series with iPhone 13. Did you end up doing that? Any negative effects with vibration on the iPhone/Quad lock combo? Those shots with the extended arm really contributed to some dynamic footage and I think that while there is risk the content really adds to capturing the action one experiences while riding. We are all grateful for this amazing series. I suspect you are going to see great growth in subscribers even if this is not your intent. Beers!

Thanks James. Yes, pretty much all of my off-bike shooting was with the iPhone 13 Pro Max. I tried using the quadlock adapter onto a mini tripod, but that was unwieldy, so I was using gopro on the tripod, but hand-holding the iPhone. I've got a few other ideas on shots that I want to do mounted on the bike... and interestingly enough it involves the 360 camera. I'll talk about this more on video 3 in this series.

I find I don’t use my Dji drone on moto trips coz it takes too long/can spoil the teams flow, but your gear is so handy! You had any issues re the drone getting wet in your storage position?

Hi there No, I've had no issues with the drone getting wet. I usually carry a plastic bag, so if I get stuck in heavy rain I'd throw a bag over it. I'm going to be riding in Victorian High Country in a few weeks, so I might take a ziplock bag for the water crossings... just to be safe.

Glad you find these videos useful Scott. Yes, I have invested in good equipment over time... But it's like anything... I think the knowledge of how to use it is more important than the gear itself. I met plenty of photographers with the latest DSLR cameras that couldn't use them properly.

@@brentbat yes I couldn't agree more, like the old saying " all the gear and no idea" 🤣🤣 A good photographer can take amazing footage or shots using anything they can find. Also experimenting with shots, angles, filters, speeds etc and only using the shots that are what you were after. A friend of mine who has now left us, (rest his soul) had awards as the best in the world and he showed me a lot, a keen eye and natural ability but he said you have to be like a sniper and wait sometimes days, weeks or longer for that perfect shot. He loved taking live action shots of birds and animals etc. I'm sure over time I'll decide what's best for me,. and that may not work for others. Thanks for your reply Brent. 😁👍

@@ScottSillis Yes, you are right... when I was doing hardcore landscape photography, sometimes I would go back to one location 4 days in a row at sunrise just trying to get the right lighting. I've seen nature photographers sit in hides for days or weeks waiting for that "perfect shot".... a lot goes into it that most people never appreciate.

@@brentbat yes Brent I was going to say earlier, my mate Ken would get up very early to get on site before sun up to get that one shot where the light was perfect which doesn't last long at all. Photography is ALL about the lighting he'd say. Same for sunsets etc He didn't believe in Photoshop it all has to be "Real" photography he said too many use photo manipulation these days and that ruined it, good photography became good editing. His NIKKON trophy made of crystal for first prize and certificates for 1st and 2nd place for his work has me listening to everything he had to say. We had fun taking a NIKKON each to see who took the best photos. One day he said you won, you have a natural eye for shots. Quite a compliment from a guy like he was.

Looks like youve thought through the efficient access to your equipment bit well. Am curious to know how much time out on the trails is stopping, maybe backtracking a bit, mounting cameras or getting the drone setup etc, connecting, adjusting angles, then packing away, and all the rest of it. On an 8 hr riding day, how much time is spent with all that over the course of the day?

All depends on the distances you are doing each day and where you are riding in from. When riding around the Flinders, the distances aren't that great, so a stock seat is fine. But it's the run in and out of the Flinders that might be painful. I would have been in a lot of pain trying to do the 700km run on the stock seat. That is for sure.

Hi Brent. I’ve really enjoyed your videos and have found them very useful for learning about editing and videography. I live in souther California in the states, 90% of what I ride is desert and it often leaves my videos looking grainy and boring since there is no contrast between the trail, and the surrounding environment. Everything is brown and dusty! Yet in reality it is a beautiful landscape. Do you have any quick tips to make my videos look more detailed in that sort of environment. Currently using a go pro hero 5, with nd filter and many of the settings you have recommended. Thanks!

Hey TrianNError. I'm not sure if you do any grading of your videos, but that would be about the only thing you could try to increase the contrast.... oh and the other thing is just to be aware of where the sun is and what angles make your landscape look the best. Usually it's shooting either earlier in the day or later in the day when the sun is low and behind you... or off to one side. then you get more shadows on the rocks and stones and that will help.

Thanks Jack. No, I didn't. I was coming off a 1250GS and I knew I wanted something that was a LOT lighter. When I looked at bikes, the 701 was 100kg lighter, wheras the smaller twins were about 50kg lighter. So I just made my mind up to go with a more capable bike. But I have a mate who went from a GS to an 890, and now he's just bought a 701 as well, so if you want to talk to somebody who owns both bikes, let me know and I"ll introduce you.

I don't use the remote that much for my main camera on my chin mount, unless I'm changing modes (from wide angle POV to "cinematic" mode). then it is very useful for that.

This way I'm only recording the highlights and I tend to get 2 or 3 hours out of a battery, so I usually change batteries when we stop for a break.

Are those the Mosko 80? How do you find them? I love the 701 but my riding is trails in the spare time and highway mileage to get to and from work pretty frequently. Would you still recommend it for 50/50 trail/highway use?

I love the Mosko Reckless 80. I also have the Reckless 10 for day setups. I think these work well for dirt or road... the only question for you is do you need such large panniers or would the Reckless 50 setup be more suitable.

I see you're using the GoPro remote (or similar) on the tank bag. Was literally just looking at this last night for my trip to 3 week trip to Iceland next year to control multiple cameras. Have you had any issues with it?

Hi Tyler, the only issues I have had is that sometimes the remote forgets about the cameras. This doesn't seem to be an issue while I'm on a trip, but more "between trips". I always double-check the pairing of the cameras with the remote before I go out on a trip, and if I need to re-pair them it is very fast. But other than that, no I haven't had any issues. The remote works well, especially for multi-cam shooting or if you are operating a camera that is not on a chin mount and easily accessible.

The skydio case is not waterproof right? What do you do in the rain?

Correct, that case is not waterproof. What I do if it rains is I carry a couple of garbage bags, and I can take the drone from the top of the beavertail and wrap it in plastic bags and then secure it UNDER the beavertail.

I have GoPro 9, 10, 11 Black (any of those are good). The ND filter set is from Freewell I use grip mounts from RAM mounts and I use their long extension arm.

Brent, hi. I have the same set up as you, Husky 701 with the Reckless 80 system. I need a tank bag, I recently spoke with Mosko Moto intending to purchase the Hood and they said they wouldn’t recommend it for the 701, too bulky and would get in the way. Have you experienced any negatives in this respect? Thanks, Steve. 👍

Hi Steve, No, I love my Hood bag and it works well. I run it well forward which does make the ignition a bit cramped, but it doesn't get in the way of me riding at all (perhaps I'm not riding properly :-). But I think it's perfect for me.

@@brentbat Thats good enough for me, I shall order one and see how I get on with it. Mosko suggested the Pico which is the smallest tank bag in their range at 1ltr, but realistically I think it would be far too small for my needs. Keep the videos coming, they are excellent. 👍👍

@@701Adventures how did you go with ordering and using the Hood? I enjoy getting right upfront on the seat. Judging by the position Brent rides with his I think I’d be just ok with the Hood.

@@adv6504 Mosko Moto were insistent that the Hood would be unsuitable for the 701, even after I spoke to them in person where they had a stall at the Adventure Bike Riders Festival in the UK they still said it would be a mistake to get one. So I reluctantly bought the Pico and to be fair although it’s small, currently it has been adequate for my needs, wallet, house keys, Go Pro batteries etc. However I believe Mosko Moto have now introduced some new tank bags to their range which are larger than the Pico but smaller than the Hood, might be worth having a look if you haven’t already. 👍

I find my 701 has tons of power, so I don't need any more, it is more about sharpening up the low-end. so the fuel dongle does exactly that.
