crystal mineral has organized molecular structure, while glass does not. But any quartz can fracture in the typical conchoidal fashion. Other gem stones do not because of their structure - beryl (aquamarine, emerald) for example has a straight line growth pattern and probably cannot be knapped without breaking
@stephenballard3759 Жыл бұрын
It depends on the mineral and the crystal, completely, you are right.

Yeah, quartz has a grain, not a cleavage. When you tumble quartz it forms an ovoid. But you sure as he'll did better than I ever have with Crystal. Great work.

will you be testing transverse arrowheads as found in europe ? there are plenty of examples of transverse and chisel heads being found in hunting contexts and usually with big game like deer .chisel shaped points transverse heads were the dominant form for our mesolithic hunter gatherers for thousands of years and in most areas they outnumber pointed forms . they have been found most associated with carabou hunters i believe. chisel shaped points seem counter productive especially for someone who likes to get the sharpest point on a conventional arrowhead . i would really like to see a test done on a carcass side by side with triangular points.

For some reason the first thing I thought of were these Homo Erectus hand axes they keep finding, which are unusual. There are a couple of flint examples with fossil or other inclusions, thinks like pyrite. They have found one made of a giant piece of translucent stone, and a couple out of very white stones. Some are very iridescent, multi-colored, etc, and some are obviously too bug to be practical. My thoughts on the matter were that it seems obvious the concepts of "coolness", beauty, and personal expression MUST have evolved as early as the understanding of technical function.

Super cool. I enjoy the vids. ? For ya. I went to England this summer. There is flint EVERYWHERE. I brought back a bag of nodules. Should I try to heat treat them or is black English flint good to knap raw?????

You should try knap opal if it conchoidal fractures.

Are the types of rock that can be knapped found in specific places? How does one know if a rock can be knapped? I’m completely new to this but I’m fascinated.
@dwightehowell8179 Жыл бұрын
How does it fracture? Take a look at a hunk of broken granite and piece of broken glass. If it has cracks or crumbles it is hopeless. If it has clean smooth breaks and produces a sharp edge... Sounds right to me. Good rock is going to be found in some locations and not in others.

Quartz crystals are a crystalline solid. Flint and Glass are amorphous. Very different substances.

I’m near-sighted and started putting a contact in dominant eye only. Since I’m not far-sighted unless I have contacts in both eyes. I was using reading glasses until I did this. It “ may” miss up your aim with bow. I don’t know. Would have to try if interested. Can always just stick the other contact in if test doesn’t work.

Smokey quartz. Might be worth a trip to Mohawk Valley Mineral Mine to get yourself some really beautiful quartz points to knapp
@ndoghouse6853 Жыл бұрын
One thing you need to understand about quartz crystal is it acts differently depending on which direction you attack it from. It is not amorphous like glass or chert. The atomic structure is different in different directions so it may not matter if you use different tools or different approach if you dont understand that it is not amorphous like glass. If you dont believe that then try knapping pure silica ingot crystal. That stuff is nasty but it can be done. Sure makes a beautiful point tho.

You're just a tad bit misinformed, there are states that allow primitive points for all game animals and you can use whatever you want on hogs on private land. I could load a black powder cannon up with chunks of broken crystals and glass and blow a herd into shreds and be within the law
