Probably the best, clearest and most concise knapping videos I’ve seen since paleomanjim! I sincerely hope you follow through and wade in with at least one of these per week, or better yet more! Absolutely top shelf knapping and your instruction, or technique description is the best out there. Do us a favor and let us count on at least a consistent regular weekly video. Please!

Thank you earnest, just now seeing this comment. I’m certainly going to try and post as often as possible, and I appreciate the kind words!

Thank you so much for your explanations on spalling is much more difficult than it first appears

Your quarrying skills of costal plains raw and explanations are really good. That stuff is going to heat nice.

Thank you, appreciate that a lot!

@@GulfCoastKnapping keep making videos. There’s lots of guys using your tools that will benefit. You can actually read a rock which is in short supply because most folks only buy stuff and don’t quarry.

I tried this with some local chert from the Matanuska river. It was seriously challenging just to get a flake off.

Depending on the chert it can be either really easy or really difficult😂

Jacob, I'm new to flint knapping. Like your videos. Very educational. Question, what knapping instruction book would you recommend a newbie purchase?
@GulfCoastKnapping Жыл бұрын
There are some good flintknapping books out there, but I’d say 95% of new knappers learn best from attending knap-ins and watching instructional videos to further their skills. If you’d like a specific video on the basics of flintknapping I could do that for you

I kind of like that Alabama coastal.....what kind of heat temp do you use.....what part of the state is it in ?
@GulfCoastKnapping2 жыл бұрын
Southeast Alabama, but also found in Georgia and Florida in the surrounding regions. I usually heat these up to 600, but depends on the grade
@j.shorter47162 жыл бұрын
Are you collecting this in the southeastern region of AL? I’m in the lake eufaula area and have heard people say there is chert about an hour south of where I am. Curious if this is the same stuff.
@GulfCoastKnapping Жыл бұрын
Yes! There’s some chert all over south east Alabama. Many farmers will discard chunks beside their fields, and there are outcrops of chert everywhere but takes some research to find
@robertseals8422 Жыл бұрын
There’s a huge quarry about an hour south of you. More than you could imagine. And I know exactly where it’s at if you would like to contact me if you are still looking to collect some.
@GulfCoastKnapping Жыл бұрын
@@robertseals8422 unfortunately that quarry has been blocked off to the public and to flintknappers, it’s been that way for 5-10

@@robertseals8422 years now😕 there sure is a lot there though
@j.shorter4716 Жыл бұрын
@@robertseals8422 yes I was talking to someone who collects arrowheads and they mentioned some chert being in either Henry or Houston county. I’ve also found some about 20 minutes from here but it is very low quality unless it’s heat treated.

There is a setting on my phone so my selfie videos don't record reversed. It's on the camera app called " save as previewed" . Uncheck it.

It’s very difficult stone, but works well when heated. I’ll find you on FB and add you.

It's as easy as driving to Albany. Drive to the Georgia power dam. There's a boat ramp there. Walk into the ankle deep water and pick it up. You'll see spalls everywhere where people break it down before they leave. GP doesn't care. I go there 2 or 3 times a year.
