Flip-Disc Kinetic Art - World Skies

World Skies is an interactive kinetic artwork and real-time weather data visualization created by BREAKFAST using our Flip-Disc medium. This artwork allows a collector to select any city in the world to visualize cloud cover, rainfall, and wind in real-time. When someone is close and interacts with the piece, a depth sensor sees them and replaces the visualization with a reflection of themselves. The contrast of their image changes based on the current cloud cover - similar to how the sun and clouds affect your appearance when outside.

Flip-Discs (also known as Flip Dots), are an electromagnetic mechanical medium of physically moving discs that were originally developed in the 1960s for airport signage and displays. BREAKFAST modernized the technology by re-engineering both hardware and software to substantially increase the speed at which each disc can flip and began creating unique, connected, interactive installations using the kinetic medium.

Just curious, is this like a couple hundreds or more like a couple thousands worth? I honestly have no idea but it's beautiful to look at. I'm guessing it must be hella expensive if it there's not a price tag 🙈

The latter. Each piece is created by hand by a team of people and it takes about 4 months from order to completion.

I used to work for Luster doing flip disks and mosaics. Are you still renting flip discs out for events or just for permanent installations?

How does the display show multiple colors?

One side has silver mirror, the other has a variety of different blues. There is only one color on each side of each disc.
