The $5 flippers will eventually realize the waste of time it really is. Getting rid of 20 long boxes? It's a lot of work. If you're gonna flip, flip big. Get into the original art. Think big. Buy big, sell big.

Never sold a book, I have traded for books I wanted. Dollar bins for me are fun, its like a diamond in the rough find. I do laugh watching some flippers on WhatNot, when the light goes out of their eyes when they figure out they are most likely losing money.

I think there is a distinction that needs to be made. Flipper = Brings value to the market by offering an item (comic) to a larger audience than than the original sales point, while also maintaining a profit. Can also be used to "fund the hobby", like so many of us do. Scalper = Buys all available stock (typically locally, see your NES example), and sells for an inflated price due to artificial scarcity created by their greed.

I am definently the guy who has 1.00 comics for sale on eBay. I got a collection very cheap so it’s easy to make a little money on every sale. I find it a lot of fun and I think it’s cool to get comics into collectors hands for the appropriate price on eBay. Just my position. Thanks for your videos.

One of favorite eBay sellers has one dollar starting bids on all of her comics. Mostly it's a steady stream of mid to high grade 80's - 90's Marvel box filler that's good for filling holes in your collection cheap. Since most of the stuff isn't keys, it's pretty common for the majority of her inventory to sell for the opening $1 bid, but what she does to compensate is an extra 50 cents per book fee if you're doing combined shipping. I don't mind, cuz I'm still getting a deal since it'd cost $5 to buy the same book from an LCS, and she's getting 50 % extra that eBay doesn't take a cut of since it's counted as shipping rather than the purchase price. If she's buying at a bulk rate of 15-20 cents a book, that's still a profitable side hustle.

Any hobby that requires buying something will always have flippers or resellers. I do think comics are less susceptible to it than other hobbies that revolve around buying. Most comics are worth less than the price on the book. The Hot Wheels collecting hobby is a lot more susceptible to it. Mattel releases special edition Super Treasure Hunt (STH) cars that are released in regular retail cases of 72 cars. They all go for $1.18 each on the pegs, but the STH cars can go for over $100 on eBay. This attracts people who only want STH cars and if they cannot find them, the whine constantly about it. They even contact Walmart corporate and report that store employees "must be" scalping them because they can never find any. These people amuse me. I'm a member of a few Hot Wheels collecting groups on Facebook in a large part to read their constant lamentations. I sometimes encourage them to report it not just to Walmart, but to the police. 😆

Personally, I'm a new comic book day flipper. If I can sell a modern book for above $20+ above retail I'll do it lol. Modern books are just for reading to me. I flip them to afford my Golden, silver, and modern books. I'm more irritated with people who get Golden-Bronze age books for the low and flip them, but I guess that's the pot calling the kettle black. Those books are collection books to me.

Flippers have been around since the early 90s. It started with the Comic Book Trading cards, moved directly into comics, when comics weren't hot anymore they moved onto toys, the TCG Industry, beanie babies, Star Wars figures, Hot Wheels, particular video games etc. Eventually they moved back into comics regardless of whether it's floppies, graded books or even omnis. They are the bloodsuckers of hobbies.

Most people flipping collectables have no understanding of what their time is worth. I use Ebay to prune my collection from time to time. These guys are lucky to be making $15 an hour. You are better getting a real job or get a skill where you can make $30 to $40. I own a business not in collectables where I make way more than $15 an hour :)

While I have no issues with the HOBBY funding itself for those of us that actually collect books and have a genuine love of the medium, I can't stand the people that simply grab books for money and nothing else. I don't see buying a stack of books and selling the part you don't want or need as "flipping"....it's simply getting the books you need or want in one of several ways and getting some of your funds back as you're KEEPING a certain book/books,which is why you bought the lot. The ones that are simply in it to make 5-10 bucks a shot are literally only stepping in the way of actual collectors that have put in years and hundreds or thousands of dollars to amass a PC that was a goal for a very long time. If I spend a bunch of cash buying up ALL the new Jordans in my area day 1 or ahead of said day, only knowing the monetary value...does that make me a "sneaker head"? I think not. And I'd be chastised beyond belief. It's ridiculous to bump a segment of the population from being able to obtain what it is they work towards simply to turn a tiny profit.
@fdawg78

I tend to flip books but not on that level. I'll buy an extra copy to eventually make a few extra bucks or to trade. If I find a key/minor key at a good price, even though I have a copy, I might buy it to either upgrade the one I have or just to resell/trade. However, I will never buy anything that I am not willing to hold on to or that I will regret buying just so I can flip it. So, to some extend, I do understand it. What I don't understand are the ones who will rob an LCS of all their copies or even preorder 50+ of the same book so they can retire early. People who do that almost always get burned. I've seen this happen so many times where they end up liquidating for half the price they paid.

I am a collector mostly, not a seller, and when I sell something it doesn't hurt when I see it on a sales shelf or convention, because I made profit from it, and if the person who bought it, finds other who can buy for more, good for them. What I hate, tha i've seen, is tha when I put books on local public free pick up libraries, some people that knew i was doing it, take all those donated books (not one, almost every book) and resell them. Ive taken measures for that not happening, but thats a thing that gets me a little mad.

I am a collector, but I do also sell from time to time because I don't have a huge house, warehouse, or other means as to store much more than I have. I do try to find books that I think others will like and I do want to be compensated a little bit for my efforts, so if I buy a little low and sell for a little bit of profit, I'm not going to feel guilty about it. There is also the cost of setting up at a show and nobody wants to set up and be in the negative after a show is finished; we want to walk out with a good bit of extra cash in our pockets. :) I don't generally try to flip a book for a great deal of profit, though, because I want to 1) give someone a good deal and 2) enjoy getting books to people who really want them. Great video though!

Most common flip, buy for $5 and flip for $20-25. In addition, these book will likely get marked up by the store within 5 days. In addition, it doesn’t help with publisher increasing price more often than ever. So as an average Joe. What should you do? It’s really sad… more shops are closing because simply they don’t sell enough books and all the hot books get scalped. It’s a lose lose proposition for everyone.

I'm saying this in fun: Kind of hard to not say "Pot calling kettle..." when I'm looking at a wall of comic slabs in the back ground. That being said, flipping has always been around for everything. Back when I started in the 1990s, it was action figures, comics and cards. We called them scalpers because the big players would often have insiders they would pay to hold back the gold that they would then turn around and ask $$$'s for. Back then too, selling on eBay was new and also the fees were very little so buying something for $1 and flipping for $5 was doable. Anyone doing that today on eBay, as a flipper, would be losing money. Frankly it's a pointless flip. Those who make it a point to suck up everything, especially a free comic on comic day to flip later to make $$$, frankly is sad and does more to harm the hobby than anything.

I don't know about this one. People have been flipping comic books and everything else since forever and it's not going to go away. I don't personally have a problem with it as I always expect that anything that is in high demand will have individuals that are going to be moving quickly stockpile and then flip. But again this is only done when there is a high demand for a given book. The best way to defeat it is either get a pull list at your LCS, order copies ahead of time from the LCS or a distributor, or just wait until the hype dies down and then buy the book on the cheap. This is a non issue for me.

A few almost meltdowns have occurred when I'm 3 long boxes deep into pricing and grading books with 3.5 more to go where I wonder what the point of anything is.

Ive seen flipping since 1989 when we used to do comic shows. But Im sure its been around since comics were sold. Most of the flippers at the time where ages 15 to 23. People who are just starting out looking to add extra to the income. But dont fool yourself. Some of those guys would walk around and have a stack and sell maybe 20 to 30 books a day. They could make and extra $100 to $150 a day and for a 16 year old, thats not bad. Only drawback that I used to see is that the flipper always overgraded by at least a half grade. So the deal the buyer thought they were getting wasnt the big deal at all. AND after being screwed a few times, that buyer would avoid the flipper. But the flipper would move to another victim. I found the biggest problem are sport guys who dabble in comics. MOST dont know enough about the books and are better off staying in their sport expertise realm. Sometimes asking 10 times retail cause "Its Old" or cause "Its Mint". With the comic collector bring about reality in grading the book at a VG+4.5. Used to see that all the time.

The fact that he said "Buying up all the Ultimate Spiderman 1's" on NCBD shows how uniformed he is. Avg store would NEVER let 1 person buy up all the copies of the hottest book on release day. Even Midtown will set limits. Most people who order large preorder before Final cutoff and the books have nothing to do with the shelf books. People will listen to anybody nowadays.

I honestly don't understand why you would be upset about somebody flipping a comic book that you had flipped to them. With the exception of maybe subscription copies, every comic book we own was bought from someone else, and every comic book we've sold was bought from someone else. There's literally no way to collect or sell comics without buying someone else's comics first. It's the nature of the hobby. Should the store I bought a comic from be mad when I sell it, or should the guy who sold you the slab first be mad at you for selling it to the other flipper? Of course not. I also don't understand your "small potatoes" accusation, considering that you sold a slab you bought for $55 for $80 (55 slabs for $3K rounds up to a $55 average per book). You made a $25 profit selling that slab, which is only $5 more than the other flipper made selling the same book. How is a $20 profit considered "small potatoes" but a $25 profit isn't?

I got to admit, this video confuses me. It starts off talking about how you flipped book. Then goes on talking about how flipping low is inconsequential. Afterwards saying not to do it. I think flipping has always been done. you talk about FOMO on a few books lately, if you look in the image starting day, EVERYONE was buying cause they didn't want to miss a big payday. Is it sad, sure, but it is the way of the world. I never sold a comic till I made my own. My son has gotten into the flip game, he has made so many connections, both buyers and seller. Gotta remember, flipping helps Stores and vendors, which are cornerstones of this industry. Just my opinion, causal collectors can always buy reprints/trades... I don't flippers hurt the industry. Just an opinion

It's capitalism. Ya can't really be emotional about it I would think. It's not like selling a dog or cat, it's a slab or comic book. Most industries have aftermarkets for products. Comic book flipping has been around forever. Why do you think people watch channels like ComicTom101? I don't think it's a bad thing. If flippers use software bots to but up all the PS5's or similar bad human behavior, I definitely don't think that's cool. Too buy up supply and spike the prices on it after artificially creating a market shortage is actually illegal....price gouging. Tough case to prove though. Ask all the jackasses that were selling water and toilet paper during the Wuhan Flu goofiness.

Says the guy who gets things slabbed for no real reason. The Book is not a Key. It just gets slabbed and suddenly worth 20X the cover price.?

This a weak commentary on that part of the industry. Comics are very different than PS5 and other retail items. If a customer wants a comic, they can almost all add it to a pull with as many copies that they would like. Comic issues can be somewhat guaranteed if you check the previews and know what is coming. Don't got time, tough luck and that is what the secondary market is for. Seems hypocritcal that you buy collections and sell anything. People are allowed to change their mind on owning. I've bought many comics I later decided I didn't really want anymore, sometimes immediatly after. Expecting someone who buys from you, only to keep that comic as a cherished PC forever is lunacy.

False. Comic stores can hold those books, lie say they didn't get them and sell them on eBay under another account. This happens ALL the time.

Personally, I blamed the flipping of the PS5 and the SNES Classic Edition on Sony and Nintendo. They failed to release enough on the initial release to satisfy demand. With the research data they had, they knew what demand would be. If they could only release a limited amount due to a lack of chips, they should have increased the initial price. They should have set the price at the scalper price. Then when they could release more because the chips were more available, they could drop the price of the consoles.

I flip on eBay, go to garage sales, flea markets, etc, whatever I make, I buy more comics for me. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe your beef is not with flipping but more with the non-collectors that know jack squat about comics
