The backing, which you didn't recognise, is incredibly rare. It looks like hardened pressed leather and comes from a company called Lincrusta-Walton, but is a mixture of linseed oil and putty. It was used to decorate the walls on the Titanic in areas of 1st class. The company still exists and nowadays manufactures linoleum. If you still have a sample, you have a piece of history.

Ammonia fuming is what Stickley did with their furniture. Takes the yellow tones out.
@krisaaron5771Ай бұрын
THANK YOU!! Any idea how they did it? I'm facing a LARGE china cabinet/buffet made of "yaller" pine (not yellow but "YALLER!!") I think it may have been a shop class project or some company bought a boat-load of unfinished furniture from overseas and planned to finish it in the US. If I could fume the hell out of it with ammonia my life would (wood) be good again. Maybe seal the pieces in a large plastic bag with a pan holding high-test industrial ammonia for 48 hours? Put it out in the sun to get it warm? What's good enough for Stickley is good enough for me.

I don't know why you joke about being a professional. You ARE the consummate professional furniture restorer! I watched someone else's video the other day and was screaming at the TV b/c he didn't sand inside the drawers and remove stains, or sand the back of the piece. You do such outstanding work on all the pieces you touch! Kudos to you!! BTW, closed captioning says "Bob's your ankle" instead of uncle. LOL.

I'm amazed at the end result. Wow. 🙂 Repaired with the original wood, gaps fixed etc., might be ideal to some, but I don't find something more valuable just because it's old, especially when it was never a work of art in the first place. What you have done has not only strengthened the falling to pieces old wreck, but has also made it really good to look at, and both those things will give it another lifetime of use and pride of ownership. It's now sturdy, useful, and very attractive, and I'd be very happy to have it myself. Great job. 👍🤗👩🦳

You're a Great Furniture Detective! It's a Great Arts and Crafts Movement piece Now and I Think You've kept the Spirit of what the Original Maker had Attempted to do. Purists complain about changing the Work of Original pieces that may be Imperfect but those are often the Ones Nobody wants and will end up on the Scrap Heap. Incredible restoration! Breathtaking. For older furniture like this piece they were often 'multi purpose' items. In this case - perhaps a book case/silverware or china cabinet below, a drop down letter writing table, and maybe even more china/display cabinet above (where you found the 4 useless screws). Women would use such items in the dining room or kitchen. They'd write cheques/ manage the family budget, deliveries, store receipts, etc, in the 'hidden' little drop-leaf desk-table. Today, this would make an excellent laptop/home office table with a bookcase/storage below.
