This exact same question was in our text book in multiple choice questions section and everyone (including our teachers) were confused about this question. Now I am going to share this video and end all the confusion. Thanks Flipping Physics!

interesting question and counterintuitive answer

This is a great conceptual problem. I have a question though... why then would sea levels rise of the polar ice caps melted?
@FlippingPhysicsАй бұрын
The polar ice caps are on land, not in the oceans. When the polar ice caps melt, they add water to the oceans.

@@FlippingPhysics my hero!!! Ty so much. You are only reason I got a 5 in AP Physics C and an A in the class!

The physics works! Nice presentation of a classic problem. I particularly like the side-by-side time lapse. I think the pacing through the mathematics is probably good for where this falls in your sequence, but would need to be slowed down and intermediate implied steps made explicit if used earlier.

Thanks. I see your point about pacing. It's always difficult to figure out exactly what pace to go at. I think you are correct about it fitting in my sequence.

I have done same question 40 years ago in highshool, in China. There are two follow up questions. 1. if there is a piece of iron block inside the ice, what would happen? 2. If there is a piece of wood block inside the ice, what would happend? Have fun!

I love these questions!

If iron ball is inside ice , water level will fall right ???

so why are we concerned about sea levels going up as huge pieces of polar ice melt due to global warming?

because sea water density is more than water density so when ice bergs melts water level will rise . In normal water if ice is melt then there would be no change in level ... But at last sea water is saline
