It still blows my mind that Keith's singing voice is that, while his speaking voice is THAT. Thank you for the breakdown on Happy - I really didn't realize there was only two verses, how simple the bass and drums were, because the song always sounds like a monster. What? Let it Loose might be one of my favorite tracks on the whole album!

Hey Steve That was a quick turnaround from Part 3, especially during the summer when you should be doing other things. But we are all so grateful. Thank you again and again, my friend. Loved the opening sequence with the photo graphics and isolated vocals. You always do find new ways to start each of your productions. What creativity! You continue to astound me/us with your ability to source out unique, candid, and behind-the-scenes/backstage materials for your videos! It still amazes me about the workload that bands had back when they were younger. It’s shocking there wasn’t more burnout at the time. In the early and mid-60s, two albums a year could be released, with touring in between. Then one album a year, from the late 60s until the mid 80s, as the number of tours was reduced and were shorter until 1989 onward with the Stones’ renaissance. How they could withstand performing one show a night for weeks on end is baffling but then there were times they did two shows a night. For whatever reason, the band always seems to find off the beaten path locations to play in. Now it’s a likely more for their own enjoyment, but perhaps back in those days, university towns were the only places with venues having the capacity to hold fans, as well as having a resident population to fill those seats. Imagine being upset over an extra 50 cents a ticket, or having them go on sale at 10pm (if I heard that last bit correctly). I think many of us would have loved to visit Paradise Records on Hollywood Blvd for those bootlegs. This tour certainly had a Murderer’s Row of photographers, and stage attire by one of the greats Ozzie Clark who had quite a life himself. It was wonderful to see Tina Turner between shows in LA, and the band welcoming her there as the legend she was becoming, especially during those dark times in her life. They and Bowie always saw her as that as she inspired them. It was great to see a spotlight on Let It Loose, a truly underrated song by them. And now onto Part 5, as there is more than a month left on the tour. Can’t wait

Hi Kathy, I agree, I should be relaxing. I actually rushed at the end (please read my description apology I just added). I take a mistake like that seriously, and to your point, I wanted to relax and do nothing! arghh! Very cool to hear you enjoy the intro, one of my favorite parts to make these, and to think about. The thought is usually done, when I see or hear something as I edit. it may be soon or later...but I just say to myself, yea that works for the intro. Amazon all the dynamics for music, studio time, writing, touring and pleasing. Got to say, not a normal routine, and where and how their external body enhancing powders assist. Which is why Bill stopped, and said enough! Yea, total 1927 Yanks photographers! They knew how to promote this! LILoose is one of my gems and enjoyed breaking it down. LOL, I don't know if I may have PART 6. Got more scripting to do, so it will take longer. Throw in the Yanks and post season, and football season starting, then the Knicks. all my best to you and for your support!! Steve

@@FlipSideCT And 'feel' is why these are so worthwhile...AI is coming out with robodocs every couple of hours, without warmth or wonder. Yours is a labor of love, something supremely unhurriable. Also, re: Mr. Jones...Rock and Roll fandom can be a bit of a sport, if you let it, so there will be Brian (and Mick T and Ronnie and Wayne and Harvey and the what-ifs) tailgate beer-belligerence, broadsides and blowback, but rock and roll itself is an art, so don't be dissuaded by their well-meaning ignorances. I loved the Brian of I Wanna Be Your Man and Under My Thumb, but he died, and the world...and the band...went on. Two side thoughts: Brian's interest in Joujouka predated the world music and electronics smorgasbord we finally have in the 2020's; you likely mentioned this in Beggar's, but recent listens have shown it to be much better than I thought 40 years ago. And, following on, do you have any interest in Mdou Moctar, Tinarawen, etc? There's a Ry Cooder angle there, too. Rant ends, rock and research on, with thanks and further encouragement, etc!

Steve, yo, what’s up, what’s up!!!? I’ve been waiting for this one. What you do is so good that I think I’m going to just have to make up another moniker for you like Dr. Doc! well, what can I say? I really enjoy each and every one of these you know I’ve been with you for a long time now and let me tell you each, and everyone of these keeps growing and getting better and better, and better! So much spot on info and so much film footage that I’ve never seen before I always enjoy all of that. I particularly took notice of the moving film footage of Keith with his back, then girlfriend who I believe was Quincy Jones’s daughter. You showed her and part three as well as this one with the backstage footage. you are the perfect narrator for these Rolling Stones docs. also, as a player, I really loved the demonstration part with the two guitars top and bottom playing happy really great! Also some good footage of Bill and Charlie too and some great Mick Taylor stuff also. Many of your subscribers are right when they say oh it’s like Christmas morning opening a gift or it’s like a kid in a candy store. Yeah, you know, your docs are that great. I just love them more and more as time goes on. Well keep it rocking flipside. I’m really waiting on part five I think it’s going to be fantastic, cheers to you, my friend and I’ll talk to you next time for sure-DOMENIC Philly, DC🎉!!!!!

Thank you as always Domenic! It is warming to read this, and I showed my wife, who smiled plenty! It is a huge challenge to make these and create something of interest and not ho hum, and something fans can walkaway with. So kudos to you and fans like you who get it and can enjoy and identify these choices I make. I will say, I know Robert Frank had many 1-2 second shots of footage in CSB, that the normal eye can not pick up when watching, it is just too quick......this was eye candy for me to play it in slow mo and show it here. It is like Christmas for me, as I enjoy giving and seeing and feeling the smiles! Yes, PART 5 will be a hoot, I have only 2 shows scripted, and that is many pages already (KC/DALLAS), then there is much more after, so it will take a bit longer.....I do need down time, plus the NY Yankees are doing well, and Football starting, so that takes me away from other life chaos. thanks again for all my friend. hope one day we meet.

@ Steve FSCT I’ve been working on cooking a French Red Wine Beef Stew. This is a hard dish to pull off correctly. But your new STONES DOC has been by my side the whole time I’ve been attempting this dish again. OKAY so what I learnt is I maybe can’t cook after all. LOL I’m going to stick to my Italian food from now on I think. A dark red wine gravy sauce is not easy to make work perfectly. So easy for it to taste off! But I’m going to keep doctoring it until something works and it tastes better. I don’t know how much of a chance I’m going to have to cook in Toronto so I thought I had better try this before I leave. Definitely going to check out some good Italian restaurants this time when I’m in Toronto again, if there are any. All my food ends up tasting Italian. LOL I end up making pasta to go with my bacon and eggs. LOL

@ Steve Flip Side CT Happy came about in 1971 in the south of France when the others didn’t show up and Keith was by himself. He got it on the first take And you can even hear the first take of when he got it on the finished song because they put the very first take on to the beginning of the finished song. When you have a listen the first part sounds different from the rest of the song that it leads into. And when asked why the song is called HAPPY Keith replied that because nobody else was around and WHEN he nailed this very first demo take on the very first demo recording it made him HAPPY and that’s why that very first demo take is also on there, used for as the intro of the finished song. Because the very first take often seems the best somehow so why not put it in there! They did the very same thing or a very similar thing for Midnight Rambler and you hear the intro is off a simple recorder very similar to HAPPY. This procedure or recording practice is practically unheard of in the industry and is uniquely STONES and maybe only KEITH and the STONES and Company are the only ones to pull it off really well. Moreover, to me it is also like Keith skipping something through the back door and many people are not even aware of what they are actually listening to when the song starts because it naturally sounds so good just about nobody thinks to question it. It’s like a ONE OFF sort of thing. That’s what HAPPY IS ! It’s actually a form of realism and it’s very spontaneous. They can pull it off because it just works so well.....that first take is so special it just makes you feel happy and you weren’t actually thinking about it before it happened. Well Keith actually captures that and thatS HAPPY AND THATS What you actually start to hear right in the gosh darn finished track. And it’s a two sided coin and a flip sided coin too. After doing these songs live over and over they really evolve and there are things they wish they could have included on the studio cut. But the very first take is the front of that coin and they must have thought it was so good and cool if they could get that on there before the song evolved and they did! This was all explained to me from somewhere but I can’t remember where I read it. I think it was from an interview from Keith himself. The other thing about HAPPY is just read the interview from 1971 with Keith and Anita in the magazine THE ROLLING STONE that was done down there in the south of France. You can really tell where Keith’s head was when you listen back to the lyrics in HAPPY. This one off depth realism is maybe what I like best about THE STONES. It’s like they aren’t out to impress anyone but if they found something that made them happy then that’s what you will get and hear ! And if it makes you happy too then all the better. And if we don’t dig it or get it then that’s our problem. If it’s good stuff we will probably get it at some point. When you hit something dead on , on the very first take and it was totally unintentional ...you were just killing time until all the others showed up ....that makes you feel HAPPY! That’s what HAPPY is about more or less on one level among other things. The other thing is just that a ROCK N ROLL career can make you happy if you don’t need to be like papa working for the boss man all night and day. For once Keith showed up in 1971 and for once the others didn’t and it turned out to be VERY PRODUCTIVE just playing and waiting for them and to my knowledge as far as I know that’s where HAPPY came from and they even GOT THAT RIGHT ON THERE ( at the very beginning) so you can hear it and feel it! :) That’s why it sounds so monotone right at the beginning. BUT MONOTONE couldn’t actually be further from the truth! Slipping something great in through the back door. It makes you go YEAH!!!!!!! At the end of BROWN SUGAR you can hear Keith go YEAH !!!!! And I understand that in the end that first take of BROWN SUGAR from 69 is the one they decided to go with !!!! Happy sort of expresses and epitomizes that feeling and experience in a song and in the song. It’s actually a pretty deep thing that’s going on but it’s in another way, couldn’t be more simple!! :) Isn’t that H A P P Y ? What H A P P Y is ? After All ?
@FlipSideCT4 ай бұрын
thanks for the insight Greg, a lot here from your perspective. We may never know or get it all understood.
@gregdettling66934 ай бұрын
@ STEVE That’s the honest truth....we may never know the full and compete true story or as you say know everything or get it all understood - even the members themselves forget a lot of it or have a particular perspective - but you do very much to fill in many of the gaps and I think most of the gaps. Your docs are very well researched and factual And seem very well cross referenced. One could probably do a PhD on HAPPY alone but be good to start with you what you have made and compiled and go from there following all the lines and threads. Back in the day some fabricated rumours became what passed for knowledge and were widely believed but were totally untrue - such as Keith getting a complete blood transfusion in Switzerland. I think Keith himself has debunked that nasty little bugger for us that went on for a long time by saying that he ‘wouldn’t change this blood for anything.’ You do even more for us and put it all together! The research that goes into your docs must really be climbing Mt. Everest every time. You are the man on the mountain that says come on up!!! And we are the other fans in the valley with a face full of MUD:) but after your climb we get to come up with you! Really like this DOC!!!!! YOU ARE JUST GETTING BETTER AND BETTER! It’s such great work !!!! Really timeless stuff !!!! Without you so much would have been lost in the shadows of time. Like Humpty Dumpty they wouldn’t have been able to put it all back together again and a lot would be lost. YOU HAVE CAPTURED AND PRESERVED SOOO MUCH! :) we are definitely closer to knowing and understanding everything because of you!

@ Steve Flip Side CT Blushing...you deserve it. You deserve much more praise than you actually get for making these! Before a big new doc goes out maybe well before....a short KZbin trailers for just a taste and this can build the anticipation even more and also get people talking as the anticipation builds. A little prelude of what they will be in store for. It might make time for all that to build and for people to talk and for word to get around while you are working on it. Then watch if views don’t go up more quickly as soon as it comes out. Give everyone a little something to go on until it comes out. No exact deadlines or exact dates, that can be a surprise! :) Something this big like one of your new Docs - just like any big film - seems to deserve a little short preview tidbit just to grease the skids.
