It's definitely not a star, but a supermassive black hole. What you actually see is the accretion disk around the black hole, which emits a lot of radiation, including visible light. And apparently our Stationeer space suits are a lot better at handling x-rays than they are dealing with infrared radiation. :D

It doesn't seem like the suits have trouble with infrared radiation either; they're immune to radiation in general, other than letting _some_ visible light through. You do not get heated up by being near a hot object (or through the windows etc.), _only_ from hot air around you. No pressure, no heat transfer. Infrared radiation isn't synonymous with heat :P

2:57:47 Steel is an alloy (of sorts), and many of them melt at lower temperatures than it's constituent pure metals - especially those that have a eutectic point, which steel does. In fact, pure iron melts at at 1538°C (1811K), and steel with at least 0.1%-ish carbon melts at between 1493°C (1766K) and 1147°C (1420K). So yes, that part was kind of realistic before, but the temperatures being 1000K too low is probably more significant than it being _the same_ melting temperature for both. Although I've only taken 1 semester of metallurgy-type classes and don't know anything about refining metals from ores. (I can't imagine how it would take lower temperatures though.) And the above figures assume that the two substances are already mixed, so I don't know if you can get a mix of separate iron and carbon clumps to melt at the same temperatures. (Although having a "starter dough" of melt-able steel should "catalyze" the melting process and make it possible, with enough mixing action.)

If I was in the situation of these game characters, then I'd personally want my oxygen super chilled, instead of just at 20°C or so. Combine the consumption rate of oxygen and the heat bleed rate into a suit at night, and you can calculate the temperature for the oxygen at which the waste tank would fill with pure CO2 during the night. (You'd still fill it with plenty of wasted O2 during the day.) Yes, if you fill a room with that oxygen it would initially be at below freezing, but that's nothing that running a few machines (an arc furnace off-gassing gold for example) can't fix. And if you're in a room with room temperature gases (or a vacuum room), then the oxygen tank's contents would be too cold to air condition your suit, but you can avoid that problem by breathing the ambient oxygen in those situations, or by setting up an oxygen warming setup.

1:08:20 love how Splitsie adopted "Toot'n Scoot" so quickly 🤣 And, when doing so, make sure the airlock is closed. Last toot, it was clear that the explosion lit up the atmosphere inside, seeing that the airlock-to-be was a small flamethrower. (Personally, have yet to manage a Vulcan start. Know how to, in theory, just haven't managed to apply theory into practice (yet). Seeing a lot of my own mistakes in this run, so quite happy with that 😊 haha) 1:10:02 I'm guessing no explosion cause the nighttime temp is lower than cumbustion temp

For the record, you do not take lung damage _at all_ when you have the _yellow_ warning on your HUD. I've left my engineer for an hour at 20 kPA at 4x lung damage and 0 damage in the save file. The engineer requires _16 kPA_ partial pressure of oxygen. Since it won't quite exactly be that due to exhaling and refilling from the tank, I recommend not setting your suit under about 18-20 kPA, but you absolutely can keep your suit at that pressure indefinitely. You'll have the persistent low-pressure yellow HUD warning, and you may have to disable the low pressure vocal warning, but your engineer can definitely survive at that pressure, provided it's pure oxygen (that will NOT work if you swap your waste and oxygen tank, though, obviously). Incidentally, that 16 kPA partial pressure is absolute, the overall pressure of the atmosphere doesn't matter at all. Your engineer will survive just as well in a 100 kPA room that's 16% oxygen as they will in a 16 kPA room that's pure oxygen, or anything in between (you know, provided the rest of the atmosphere isn't actually _toxic,_ which only volatiles and pollutants actually cause lung damage that way). Also, I know the engineer can take _at least_ 560 kPA, since that's typically what I set my suit IC chip to keep it at.

with hot planets I alwasy make a 1x1x2 room. basically a 1x1x1 with an airlock. you would have a vent to vent outside and two vents inside one to hold your O2 and another to hold waist air. you could empty the tank of O2 into pipes that are setup so they are only on the inside. you do this with iron blocks not iron walls as you would need iron walls on the outside as your O2 pipes right now are on the outside your O2 will overheat. with the small room you have an O2 pipe system and a waist pipe system and a water pipe system all inside a 1x1x1. Then you eat and drink in that room. Then you can work on other rooms without the need to make large breathing rooms right away. When leaving the 1x1x1 room you vent all the O2 back into the O2 vent then when the room is empty you move to the air lock and then to the outside leaving the room empty.
@MelodicMetalNL
@MelodicMetalNL Ай бұрын
This is the way. 1x1x1 with an airlock all consisting out of iron frames. Have 2 pipe systems in the inner chamber. One for O2 and one for waist air. Drag your O2 tank inside and let out a tiny bit of breathable air. This is now your safespot for drinking/eating and after sunrise just get in this room and wait it out. Be sure to vacuum the inner room when leaving so your pipes don't get hotter. And don't place the pipes near the edges of the inner room, otherwise they will stick outside on the corners if you're only using the bare minimum of frames.

@2:34:00 that temperature is between 100 and 300 C. Ores offgas as long as the furnace is above 100 C, and volatiles and oxygen auto-ignite at ~300 C. Between those two, you can extract the O2 from gold safely.

4th worst critical knowledge failure is insulation. While walls leak heat more than frames, they pale in comparison of heat transfer due to using uninsulated pipes in a 2 way airlock. Those 4 pipes from your interior vent to the cowl in your base is causing your base air to increase 10C per game day. You eventually had to add more air just because you needed coolant for this problem. This is why you NEVER put breathable air in your base, until you have steel and can make adhesive insulation to covert your airlock pipes to insulated pipes. Until that point, eat and drink in a standalone 1x1 survival hut or even better, use your airlock as a survival hut, and store all gas INSIDE a frame of your airlock. Yes, walls are cheaper than frames, but walls don't protect pipes from heat transfer, and a pipe on a wall is exposed to both sides and makes an excellent heat exchanger.
@dansiegel995
@dansiegel995 Ай бұрын
I did see that you insulated the airlock pipes which is good. But realize you wouldn't have the cooling problems if you used the airlock to eat and drink, keeping the breathable air cool. That single AC is a waste of electricity. Use 2 ACs, it will use least amount of electricity and keep all efficiencies near 100%. The 24kPa you have in your AC waste line is too little. You should use an active vent to remove air when efficiency is bad, and suck in cool air at night. A few Mpa of pressure would be good enough, maybe more if you run out of 'cool' air during daytime use.

With so many mistakes, will be interesting to see when you guys can get over the survival hump. I suggest plants rather than gold O2 collection. You might be able to survive by breathing O2 from gold, but you will need so much gold you would need to mine during day which heats up huge amounts of air, and will cause you to run out of air faster. Also gold won't produce enough o2 to make water. Just conserve all air as cool as possible, and with cooling, you can start hydroponics and cool your waste air - although collecting waste air outside with uninsulates pipes was a BAD idea. You will need many many radiators to cool that air in one night. And then 2 ACs to cool from 126C to 26C (remember, AC efficiency is garbage if temp delta is over 50C).
@aetryn1485
@aetryn1485 14 күн бұрын
Eh, phase change-based cooling on Vulcan is very doable and not that hard to set up. But whatever cooling method you use it's silly to make your early waste air require that much cooling to recycle, so the main thing is to keep it inside. I think Splitsie has yet to understand/embrace manual ways of doing things, hence insisting on getting doors and a pipe bender up early instead of just sealing them inside the first day with frames and deconstructing one of the frames in the evening, and moving the active vent around to different systems as needed instead of printing more. Obviously you don't want to do that for long because the chance of making a mistake is high, but it's worth it to avoid losing early oxygen from the waste tank and to get the initial building/furnace up.
@AnonNopleb
@AnonNopleb Ай бұрын
Lucky for you guys, the active vent has a pressure limit that prevents it from blowing pipes when sucking in gas. So you won't burst the tanks with your precious waste gas. The powered vents do not have a limit if I recall correctly.

The best start is a 2x2x1 room with an Iron wall as a temp door and a burst pipe(autolathe) as a vent to evac room atmosphere. Get in wait in vacuum till night, then remove the wall and build up from there. Once in vacuum, swap the vent to another pipe snake to store your waste tank until you can filter and cool it.

The main issue I have with playing that way is standing around doing nothing for long stretches while livestreaming. I know it's going to make it a lot harder for us, but hopefully with 2 people we can speed up some sections so we can manage to make it work anyway (although it does effectively halve our O2 supply)

@Flipsie I feel you air greatly underutilizing blackshadow. She is sitting around, doing very little, waiting on small tasks from you. Standing outside just manually aligning the solar panel? Quite the proverbial 'waste of air'. One person should smelt and fabricate, and the other person should build. And only mine at night, both of you. That way, you only go outside during the day for outside building (which should be rare), or to use smelter or furnace (which is unnecessary with chutes, consoles and logic writer switches to remotely control vents. Split tasks evenly - to test this, reverse roles and see how much time you are wasting.

2nd worst critical knowledge fail is making a pipe burst - this gives you a free passive vent, which is usually the primary reason you make a pipe bender before an electronics printer. Just suck in night air for a few Mpa, then cut the pipes to force all air into one pipe, multiplying the pressure. Then when that air heats up in daytime, the pressure multiplies again, and the pipe will burst. It won't burst at 60Mpa if the pipe is on a frame, it has to be untouched, floating. Else, a passive vent is actually a luxury, you can vent air into a closed pipe - you just need to release that air from pipe on every use else the pressure could get too high to use, based on vent's default safety pressure setting (which can be logically overwritten).
@Pystro
@Pystro Ай бұрын
2:15:51 The "manual pumping" by deconstructing a series of pipes can probably also be used to get air into a furnace, using only a "cowl" (or burst pipe). It might get tedious if your starting pressure needs to be more than a single-digit multiple of the ambient pressure, though. And the pressure will only ever increase on its own (via off-gassing), so you really don't need to pump gases into the furnace that often (only if you smelt something that has such a low max pressure that you can't smelt anything useful with the gases afterwards).

This would be a fun stream ideas, brutal starts in stationeers with an attempt to keep the whole team alive as long as possible since death basically means that person is out. Did you not want to build pipes and burst a pipe to make a cowl early on? The autolathe can build pipes. You could theoretically have a vacuum chamber before the first sunrise doing that. The vulcan day time really saps your oxygen which can leave you in a bad position. 1:32:10 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🔥🔥🔥🔥 why did you tempt fate?!? This was a week after the canister explosion on Venus too! So if the goal is to grow potatoes and eat them as a win, trader is basically going to be pointless. You left off in a decent place to still accomplish that. I know you probably cant build a night time pollutant compressor to fill the ac’s waste pipe with evaporated pollutants, but if you can manage to do that, you will be well taken care of for the cooling. Edit: I dont mean to imply that you cant or arent capable, just that if I explain what it looks like that you would probably be like "What is he talking about" and due to the high stress nature of Vulcan you would rather put it off because Vulcan is hot.

The most critical knowledge fail you guys had, is that the autolathe can produce pipes. This means you can do an airlock, waste collection, breathable air, without pipe bender and you can do electronics printer before pipe bender. In fact you only need pipe bender for furnace, which gives steel, which gives stayion battery, which gives air-conditioning for cooling.

3rd worst critical knowledge fail was not collecting waste air and keeping it at its current temp (usually ~100C), early in game. In a frame beside your air lock, put 2 sets of pipes (from autolathe) snaking, which have only 1 pipe each exposed to side of frame, leaving remaining pipes all INSIDE frame. Connect active vent and power to one set of pipes, then move active vent to other set of pipes. One set of pipes will hold all waste air, another set can hold breathable air for airlock room. Airlock is your survival hut. Where you eat and drink. Workroom always stays a vaccum. When unused, remove active vent and the ONE exposed pipe. All gas in those pipes are perfectly insulated, and will barely move in temp, only when using them . Note this won't work with hundreds upon hundreds of moles of gas, due to your suicidal behavior of working outside, ALL the time. You may need a second set of snake wall pipes just for waste air.
