Nice to see the radio station. I love drones ,ham radio,and I have held a FCC 1st class license with radar endorsement for 35 years. Thanks for the video. Brought back memories of my youth climbing radio towers .

OMG! Timing is EVERYTHING! Thanks Ken! I was going to so the same thing after deciding I was NOT going to pay for a FLIR Vue Pro.... although I would be much better in range resolution ect.... I'm a long time Ham guy and also into many things including flying (Corporate Jets...LR-45 for now..;) and have been taking my various Heli's, gliders and quads on the road with me to pacify my RC flying needs! Stumbled onto your channel and have been wondering about the Phantom 4. I thought my home-builds where almost as good but just couldn't resist jumping full into the P4 with HDMI mod for my Fat Sharks ect.... I've got about 30 flights on the P4 and it's almost boring to fly without all the little tinkering that I used to do with all my other stuff lol... NOW I'm going to buy the FLIR for my Android and do egg-zactly what you have done. P.S. Do you have any Range/distance resolution flight data/thoughts on the FLIR as you mounted? Thanks for the entertaining videos... Chris

You can use miracast dongle to mirror the phone screen to your labtop. So that you can see thermal image while the drone is in the air.

Good job on checking for hot spots. Does the transmitter interfere with the controller for your drone?
@KenHeron8 жыл бұрын
No interference. The FM band is waaaaayyy far away from the frequencies the Phantom uses.

did you get any kind of interference on the communication with the drone flying around the radio antenna.?
@KenHeron8 жыл бұрын
None. The frequencies are too dissimilar.

How much did your phone reduce your battery life?
@KenHeron8 жыл бұрын
I'd say the weight reduced flight time by 10-percent or more. I was more concerned with the TAPE holding my phone on!

Ken, what phone do you have that has thermal imaging? That's awesome! Could you show the difference between one of the antennas that is working properly and the one with a hot spot?

Hey Ken! What a small world! Not sure if you remember, but my name is Brooks, and I met you when I was visiting family in TN about a month ago. Mark D. brought my Dad and I by the station for a quick tour. Had I known you were this big into drones, I would have geeked out! In fact, I had my mini quad in the car at the time. I'm going to try to get back to Huntingdon sometime in the next 6 months, I'll be sure to stop by again. Cool project! Are you on FPVLAB.com by chance? Great FPV resource. Happy flying!
@bookeaterintube8 жыл бұрын
Well Done. You might not know but you have just proven that it's possible to fly very close radio transmitting spots. There are many phantom crashes an fly aways which are being blamed on radio interference. OR was the transmitter off?
@KenHeron8 жыл бұрын
Hey, you're right! Although I don't know why anyone would think an FM antenna would affect a Phantom's signal, as they are two completely different kinds of RF.
@bookeaterintube8 жыл бұрын
There is lot of warnings on forums and websites that flying around closely to strong radiowave sources can interfere with signal. They go as far avoiding high or low voltage lines. It's nice to see your fly right next to must. It's like rubbing in the face to all scaremongers :)
@KenHeron8 жыл бұрын
Heh. Yeah, none of those things can affect the phantom. Too funny. Scaredy-cats.

+Ken Heron The "pocket flir" is one of the coolest tech advances. I have no practical use for them with my job, but I definitely want one... ...of course, my boss loves all things tech. Brb, gonna put together a cost-benefit analysis real quick...

Why did your p4p have to go back to DJI?
@danielwatts73758 жыл бұрын
I honestly would've worried about radio interference...I know the rf in FM and the phantom are really far apart, but it could still cause issues.

Awesome ingenuity and creativity using a Phantom to find a broken radio antenna! I've always been interested in antennas and this was a cool way to see one. Also, how do you fly so close to the antenna without wetting your pants? (Mine would be soaked) :)
