As far as sensitivity is concerned, it is *NOT* necessary to place the gyro near the CG as stated. The gyro will see the exact same amount of rotation and will have the same sensitivity whether it is at the CG or at any length away from it. In the latter case, it will also be displaced sideways, which is irrelevant because it only detects rotation. On a loosely related note, the further the gyro is from the CG, the more vibrations it may be subjected to, which might not be good for its internals. This is the one reason for placing the gyro near the CG, *not* maximum sensitivity.

DavidsLPs1000 Rc stuff is more expensive here.If you want a good quality rtf plane the price is about 160-369euros.If you want to scrathbuilt a plane the price can drop quite a bit...Americans are lucky,they have hobbyking.You can actually buy hobbyking stuff from greece but it gets pricy at the shipping when you order something heavy...The solution is to find if greek hobbystores that bring hk stuff here,they do but its double the price...They said couple of years ago that a hobbyking whearhouse will open in greece...what can you say about it...

I would say I would normally use a gyro on the roll only as this really helps to keep the plane steady during landings etc. Aircraft have more inherent stability in pitch anyway which makes any reaction to a gust less dramatic, so you'd only need one if your aircraft was very short and less naturally stable or had a very aft CG.

I use gyros on my helis and planes and I have to say that the gyro doesnt have to go on C of G but it MUST be close to the pivot point to have maximum effect. The further you place the gyro from the pivot point the more you have to have a higher gain setting. A good example is placing the gyro at the wing centre for aileron and at the pivot point for elevator. It makes things a lot easier and you will have lots more gain to play with without having to adjust control horns.

You have 3 possible choices, either get one y cable and one reversed servo and that will allow you to drive 2 aileron servos with one output from the gyro or you just hook up one servo and it will correct for up or down on just the one side but it will still compensate and keep the plane more level than not having any gyro at all, and last you could just buy one more gyro at 13 bucks and run one gyro on each servo, if it is a big plane the extra 30 grams will not be that big of a deal.

You don't ever have to keep gyro's "level" at initializing phase. They can only track relative motion (angular velocity), but nothing absolute. I think you were mixing it up with accelerometers that some multicopter systems use for self-leveling. They on the contrary can sense static level due to earth gravity. Good video as always!

I'm from Greece and I saw the video so I have a little information for you. The word gyro comes from the word gyroscope and in greek it is called giroscopio as you correct told it giro. I liked your video very much and it helped me to learn new maneuvers.

Great video, but Honkenstonken is right: gyros measure angular movement, and as such they can be placed anywhere that is convenient; they don't need to be on the Center of Gravity. They just need to be aligned with the axis they are correcting. He is also right about multicopters, most don't need to be level on initialization unless they use accelerometers. A pure gyro-based multicopter only needs to be still on powerup (not necessary level), just like a helicopter. Cheers!

2 degs is 2 degress no matter what, but you still need to put it at CG because this is where the aircraft will want to pivot on. If you put it on where the plane pivots, it only sees the forces of the degress worth of change.. You put it further out and it sees the degrees, plus the side to side, up and down, or forward and back forces that are now amplified by you putting it further out from the CG.. its just making the gyro work harder then it has to, and adds unknown variables into flying

You could put three on. It works on tricopters... You would just have to adjust your gyros carefully. I'd set up one at a time. If you're going to do just one, which axis are you having the hardest time with? If you find it rolls too much then put it on the ailerons, if you're having trouble with pitch, then elevator.

You would not really need to put the gyro at the 'pivot point' for yaw. The only thing gyros look at is rotation angles. Anywhere on the center line between the front and the rear would realize the same angle of rotation for the gyro's response.

Yes multiple gyros work fine. Just get them orientated correctly. HobbyKing even has a 3-axis unit for cheap.

I have an old yaw rate gyro from JR, big bulky spinning gyro, large gyro controller and separate gain controller. Weighs more than my motor and ESC combined. I forgot i had it, just tested it out minutes ago, seems to work well. I'm going to build a plane and test it out. Might make a vid of it and post it as well.

great job, but I would like you to look at what you said about the gyro being on the CG. I belive you are mistaken. It should not matter if its on the front or back, 2 degs at center or 2 degs on the tail its all the same thing. I know that seems like it should be wrong but trust me math will not change look at a protractor.

Normally you have a switch to activate channel 8 or not, try the switch in both positions and then adjust the knob.

A nice idea, for planes without landing gear, would be to put the gyro centered while the plane is pointing straight up and instead of landing just fly somewhat close and put the gyro on and adjust the throttle and grab the plane while hovering automatically and finally cut the engine :D

MrPipaSc With any plane capable of hovering this can be achieved without a gyro, assuming the pilot is competent enough to put it into hover. A plane that cant hover is out of this anyway, or make it glide towards you. Point is: You dont need a gyro for normal flying.

We have a pilot at my club who put an IKON flybarless unit on a 3D foamy. it flies insane.

Just google the Futaba 401 gyro manual, its basically the same gyro to setup but the Futaba 401 is way better quality. You will also need to pull apart your gyro and make sure the internal board is secure in the case by using a small amout of hot glue on the edges of the board and place it back in the case and screw back bottom plate, its a five min fix that stops vibration thats common on the HK gyro.

i use a gyro on my home built massive rc truck based on a mini quad frame, its very tail happy and almost un driveable without the gyro but spins are so much easier to avoid with a gyro. i use the same one thats featured in this video, cheap but works just as well as any other gyro out there and i have that model on all but one of my helis.

The one they used looks like the rebranded GY48V's that I buy from Nitroplanes, if you cannot find instructions online let me know and I will scan a set of mine for you. Pretty much most operate the same way so these would probably be sufficent.

@kirbybot Yeah, in that sense I'm wrong (shouldn't have used the word "never" :) ), but I didn't wanna bring up a discussion about angular rate integration and accompanying drift errors here... Didn't think about that many heli guys use only gyro's. But in most multicopters, accelerometers debias the gyro drift, and often if you don't use accelerometers in multirotors, you don't integrate the gyro's for absolute attitude which means initial position is irrelevant.

Is that an old Kraft series 73 three channel transmitter? My dad had one of those when I was a kid. Had a "Brick" servo unit that had 2 servos built into one case. We used it on a Carl Goldberg Ranger 42 and a midwest cardinal arf. And eventually in a Dumas lil swamp buggy.

Cool vid, like what you guys do. I have a question though, when using a gyro, does it still 'correct' whilst you are using the control surface i.e.does the gyro temporarily deactivate if it detects input from the pilot? so i have 2 radios one is a futaba 7chp and the other is a 7u from 1991. my 7c has gyro settings in the radio but my 7u came out before gyros but still has heli settings. does the gyro just require a knob to control it (besides channel 4)?

but if you look at a heli, the gyro is placed REALLY close to the pivot point. the reason for this is only the amount of gain that the gyro will need to respond to the outside force. it is true that you can place the gyro anywhere as long as the axis is lined up correctly but, you need to make sure that you have enough gain to get the desired effect without overthrowing your servos. this is especially important on a helicopters tail rotor.
