That is the benefit from Sunpower Maxeon cells. The copper backing keeps all the chards of a cracked cell connected so they still provide power. This makes them much more DIY friendly! The copper also helps with soldering as you can't "suck" all the tinning off the cell like you can on a normal cell. You can solder em pretty much as if they were a circuitboard.

I just wondered does the glider have dining similar to regenerative braking where the propeller spinning the motor generates power or would it be too bulky?
@ahaveland5 жыл бұрын
Propeller regen works on bigger electric planes, but there's not enough torque to make it worthwhile on models. In any case, the amount of energy recoverable is tiny, but may be enough to help in a life saving situation, such as running out of charge at altitude then charging during a dive to get some power for controls and landing.

Well, the way you described it I wouldn't use supercaps alone either. What I would do is, this and yes, I would use supercaps but with a battery to support it. Connect the wiring was you normally would in any RC minus battery, solar and the added supercaps. Then place the battery in the plane charged. Place the supercaps in also charged but don't come in contact if you have exposed leads. Connect it to a Y-cable on the super caps. The other end of the Y-cable add another Y-cable. This is where you would connect the solar and the load. What will happen is the solar will charge the supercaps. If the voltage of the supercap is higher than the battery then it will charge it as well. If the demand is higher than the supercap can deliver then it gets that power from the battery. This makes it easier on the battery as well because it doesn't have to have changing loads applied because the supercap is buffering what's needed. This will work. You may want to look at using thin film solar cells. It's going to be a bit more pricey and I think it has far less performance than the standard solar cells. But it will be lighter and should conform to the wing more so. I have considered this before. The problem I had was, how to do cover the wing? You could use monokote but I have wondered if it would discolour after a time. If it does this will decrease the solar cells ability. And don't forget the diode mate. I don't know about this charge controller as it should have it internally. But you don't want the power to reverse back to the cell. I generally add one myself to make sure it doesn't. Let me know how your design goes. This is the general area am interested in. Just don't have time to build anymore. Nor can I find the time to build the ultralight I designed decades ago.

If you where to get better solar cells, the ones you have are probably pretty good, but i mean like space grade. and extend the wings for an additional 2 cells on each wing, im pretty sure you could easily maintain, flight as long as the sun is out. Imagine cells that are airfoil shaped so you dont have the issue with the shadow. I hope you continue to work on this. iv been watching you since you went out into the desert. Love the project.

You are 100% correct about the supercapacitors- they have far less energy storage capacity than the batteries, not viable. Maybe you can wire schottky diodes across each solar cell, to bypass any failures in your series connected arrays.
