My memory claims I've seen a a clip where they replace the skin on an airplanes wing with duct tape, and that it actually flew. But it also tries to tell me it was done by the MythBusters. However no search I've tried has turned up anything like that. The closest I got was an episode where they skin a portion of the fuselage of an ultralight using duct tape. It flew, but it was looking pretty scary. The duct tape "skin" was somewhat elastic and was flopping wildly in the airflow. So either my memory is totally unreliable or I've just failed to find the correct clip. Unfortunately I'm pretty the correct answer is option A...

Watching this video reminded me of the increasing relevance of CAD in model R.C, I watch you and Peter Sriprol use many forms of CAD (3d printing, laser cutter 2d, foam board flat cutting, mixes, and even ms paint drawings you can print on paper and cut out). I think it would be helpful to the community, and interesting if you made a video or series documenting the specific methods of CAD Modeling used by flight test when developing new designs. Also I've been watching flitetest for almost 4 years, and its amazing that you've almost reached 2 million subs, keep up the great work!

i made a glider out of cheap styrofoam plates that is shaped like a Romulan Warbird. Id love to see what it does with a motor on it. Maybe you guys could take that idea and run with it. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it glides. If the wind hits it, the craft flips around a bit but then it automatically rights itself as soon as the gust is over, so far it has always landed perfectly. Even when i tossed off the roof of our apartment complex.

What about building a plane using fiberglass window screen and spraying it with just enough Flex Seal® to get the amount of lift you need?

It would be pretty heavy, considering it's liquid rubber.
@sportswolf1
@sportswolf1 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrJJandJim I never used the stuff. I would guess it would almost fly with a light coat of the seal. I know when I put a fan in the window I have to open the screen to get the max CFM flow since the screen is a little restrictive. I wonder if it would fly (I doubt it though) without the flex seal and a big motor.
@MrJJandJim
@MrJJandJim 3 жыл бұрын
@@sportswolf1 I haven't used it either, but I know that the stuff is a thick, goopy liquid. A "thin" coat would be messy and uneven. But with a big motor, it might fly. Probably needs to be fast, like a rubber missile, lol. But there is Flex Tape, too. Possibly similar to the duct tape but certainly heavier. A flying screen by itself, however, I'm not sure. Something like a multiplex easy star, bixler or similar is the best to start with imho. Motor in the back so it will take a hit, and they almost fly themselves. Also good glide slope and non agressive stalls. Plus you can start with rudder + elevator only and then add the ailerons when you advance.
@linecraftman3907
@linecraftman3907 3 жыл бұрын
just buy or build one of the simpler flight test kits, super simple to build and most importantly repair. I'd say go with two channel (rudder and elevator) dihedral top wing aircraft(they have really stable flight charastiritics) They're really easy to fly and won't overwhelm you at first. However if you have absolutely no experience flying or don't even have a buddy who could help you start flying, start off flying in the simulator, like real flight or something. Make sure you either connect your transmitter or a cheap simulator transmitter so that you know what flying with sticks feels like

I really like the safe features of the Horizon Sport Cub S 2. I highly recommend it for a first purchase. Comes with everything you need. I bought the Horizon Champ first (about $80 on sale). I figured it was inexpensive enough that if I crash I wouldn't be too broken hearted. I have learned a lot and repaired and modified it a lot. (made the engine cowling removable, added an aluminum brace inside the wing foam, tape for the battery). No ailerons though. Was a little bit of a learning curve going from the rudder on the right stick for the Champ to the rudder on the left (and aileron on right) with the Sport Cub S 2. One of the reasons I kinda wish I just got the Sport Cub S 2 first. But I do love the Champ for it's simplicity (it can't handle the wind very well). My wife bought me the Horizon Sport Cub S 2 during black Friday for like $75. Super deal, normally $139.99. I almost wish I started with this one. The safe mode saves me from so much, and really helps in the wind. It does drain the battery faster (the Champ battery never ran out on me, I got bored or crashed before it ever ran out). Spare battery. Was like $6-8. Works on both the planes. Both planes come with all you need to fly.
