I fell in love with the Berlin Hauptbahnhof instantly when I walked in for the first time. Many, many train stations (especially here in North America) are dark and depressing. This one is glorious - full of glass and light. It's almost a cathedral dedicated to travel that welcomes you in saying "It's a wonderful day, let's go somewhere!"

Look up Los Angeles Union Station - last of the true train stations built in the USA, opening in 1939. Still has that art nouveau look to it. You can also see it in the video Machine Gun Blues by Social Distortion, as well as the extended version of Cream by Prince (the first 1:30 or so. A;so, Santa Fe Station in San Diego dates back to 1914 - it is not big but done in a Spanish Colonial Revival style with a distinct blue tiled dome on top.

Berlin Hbf can be annoying though because of the massive echo the glass cupola produces on the upper tracks which intensifies the squeezing noise of train brakes. You literally have to cover your ears when a train slows down inside it. And originally they had planned to make the glass cupola covering the upper decks even longer, which gladly they didn't.

Interregio wasn't a carrier but a product by DB Fernverkehr, just as Inter City and ICE, both of them still offered. Also, Interregio was a long-distance-train. It was an offer for people who didn't want to travel bewtween the biggest cities but between smaller cities and regions (hence Interregio) in fast and (then) modern trains. The Interior design was custom-made by BPR-Design in Stuttgart and was a whole new concept of travelling back then. I personally think it still holds up to today.

It looks nice but changing between the top and bottom level isn't well thought through; it's several escalators to take and the lifts are too few, too slow and stop for too long - this can miss you a connection. Apparently Deutsche Bahn thought it was more important to wedge a multi-floor shopping mall in between...

In my opinion, low-cost operators, which only serve some few lines with high numbers of passengers and only run few trains per day, are dangerous for the railway system. Publicly owned state railways usually serve the hole country, even lines and services that are in deficit, while Flixtrain & co. only pick out lucrative services.

The German railway is separated into to two divisions. Regional and Long distance Service. The Long Distance division operates under economic pressure and only serves profitable routes. The regional division is ordered and paid by the regional authority, where already many privat companies operate. So there is no Financial support from the profitable routes to the regional rotes.

Lukas I don’t know what you have been smoking, but I don’t want none of that! That scheme works pretty good in the UK , there is Virgin trains, southwest railway services, national railway etc. and guess what? It works flawlessly compared to deutsche Bahn which is known to be not on time and super expensive with bad service. This competition is actually good, because deutsche Bahn is going to have to improve their service as a whole and cut prices. Privatization is needed, so these big government corporations-have to increase their management skills and not just blow tax payers money out of the window, which is very common in Germany. Have you seen the construction of the Berlin airport or the elbphilharmonie in Hamburg? That’s what happens with tax payers money if everyone don’t care (cause as they say: it’s just “taxpayers” money).

Interregio was not a regional train. Most Interregios had very long routes so from Aachen to Dresden or Aachen to Berlin. In my Eyes the main Reason why Interregio in the 90s were not successfull is, that at that time you paid for the distance of the route. And then it depended which trains you took, you had to pay a surcharge. So when only using Regional Train there was not surcharge. When using Interregio i think it as about 3,50 german Mark ad for Inter City it was 6 or 7 Mark. So an Intercity travel was only a few German Mark more expensive than an Interregio but way faster, that made no sense. Today with a modern pricing it could be attractive again.

Those ex-Interregio coaches long time ago when said Interregio trains existed were regularly visiting Poland as a part of IR Mare Balticum. The Interregio surprisingly was no regional Train. But it wasn't a typical long way train. It was kind of a combination. Interregio trains crossed the whole country of Germany but they were quite cheaper than the intercity and some Regional Tickets like the Weekend-Ticket allowed you to use the Interregio. In some areas Interregio trains replaced local trains because there was no room in the timetable for another train. Really interesting train I think

Insider tip for when not using a seat reservation, check at which station the train starts. And if possible use that station for departure. Then you have a good chance to find a nice seat. For this trip, if you traveled to Lichtenberg or Ostkreuz (not that long or hard travel off Hbf) you would have avoided the crowds at Hbf and Ostbahnhof. When traveling off a stop down the route (like Hannover or Kassel), always pay the small amount for a seat reservation; otherwise it is very well possible you have to stand for a long time...

It's relatively cheap private-owned company that provides maximum comfort with new Scania IC buses and nowadays also provide rail services from Prague all the way to Vienna and Kosice with both old and new coaches and with 4 different classes in each trainset. As opposed to Flixtrain in Germany, Regiojet is by majority the favorable option here in Czechia.

Yes, Berlin Centralstation is an impressive building, but for traveling its far away from a costumer friendly station: narrow plattforms, only a couple of elevators (driving through the whole station which make them very slow) and not enough signs and depature boards for orientation. Interesting that you stand in front of the stairs in 2:16 and in the next shot you are on the complete opposite side of the station using the escalator :D Thanks for the video and greets from Berlin!

I don't like Flixtrain really much. Yes they are cheap but they are treating their stuff not that well. They are not that well paid and the shifts are very stressful I heard. Yes it sounds a bit conservative but I like DB more because of their treatment of their stuff. They are much better paid. In addition I think railways should be operated by the "public hand" (I don't know, if it's the correct word. It's just translated directly from German). In transportation of goods I'm totally pro Competition, but in public transport I don't think it's really the future. For regional trains it's maybe an option but long distance trains should be operated by the states railways (again my English is bad :D) in my opinion.

I hope that type of train travel does not get support in Europe. The airline industry has already been bastardized by private low-cost charter companies, which made traveling by plane in Europe as uncomfortable as possible, when choosing a charter flight, while not making any great improvements in major national airlines in terms of price lowering, precisely because of disloyal competition caused by private low-cost companies. Governments all across Europe should step up and put an end to that by starting to invest again in their public railway services. Take a look at Austria, China, Japan, etc.

The Interregio was a medium-distance product. They replaced the D-trains. The idea was that they would stop more frequently than the ICs, but not as frequently as regional trains. DB's idea was that the average journey on an Interregio would be around 150km. However, many people used them for long distance travel. They were only marginably slower than the IC, but cheaper. The rolling stock were from the late 60s/early 70s that were refurbished. It had its great time during the 90s, and basically was the train of my childhood and early youth.

I'm aware that I'm blessed living in Switzerland and I'm not saying there shouldn't be any competition ever. But I have yet to see an example from anywhere around the world where privatization and cheap carriers have brought nothing but good to a rail system in the long run. I'm not and never have been a fan of buisness models that puts profit at all costs without any regards. It's all fun and games until the negatives start to pile up. You seem to have been lucky with your Flixtrain experience, as it's a far cry from what I and others have witnessed. They deliberately overbook trains like cheap planes, hoping that some people wont show up. The coaches aren't refurbished, they can be loud, dirty, uncomfortable and will start to show their age soon. They neglect maintenance and underpay their stuff to a point where it can become a real danger to your safety. Look no further than the UK to see the absolute Mess that Thatchers glorified privatization left behind. The rail systems is a mess and rotten, the state had to buy it back and is still suffering the consequences. Private carriers come and go on a regular basis, there are many different types of trains, tickets, services, overall you pay more for less reliable and worse service, it's just one giant mess. There just isn't all that much room for competition on a railway system. There are good examples like Leo Express or Regio Jet in the Czech Republic, but there need to be strict rules and surveillance for the customer to really see any positives in the long run. Or it will all go downhill from there. Many people praise ÖBB and SBB as the best train companies in Europe, state owned yet somewhat competitive companies who work in tandem with their private counterparts to provide a tight, comfortable and reasonable prized service instead of trying ti compete and gain maximum profit at all costs. At the end of the day traveling isn't cheap and I'm willing to pay a certain prize for a good product. And as someone already has mentioned, train systems just work different here in central Europe with people not only traveling between big cities, but from pretty much anywhere to anywhere regionally. And if you really want the railway to be a worthy competition to cars and planes, there is no way around that. Cheap competition has already ruined traveling by bus and airplane to a point where you either pay nothing to get absolutely nothing in return or a huge premium fee for a product that used to be standard for a reasonable prize, I really don't need the same shit happening in the rail business too. In the end, cheap carriers mainly leads to 2 trains a day on the 3 most profitable routes between big cities in 90s coaches with a complete lack of any safety and absolutely no guarantee in terms of service and delays. As a competition for the people who want and need it, whatever. But as the future of European train travel? Hell no.

Although ÖBB is indeed very good (didn't make any personal experience with SBB yet), I in fact made even better experiences with trains across Norway. Although expensive, the Oslo airport train was by far well ahead of all of them with the nordic-simple and yet stylish interior and an amazing timetable of them going on a 10 minute schedule which is very rare for high-speed rail. Another provider to mention in a positive way is the ALEX going from Munich to Prague, with on-board ticket service, old coaches with extremly comfortable seats and with one modern double-deck coach being part of the train as well

I remember using a coach like that a few years ago, when going from german/swiss border to frankfurt.

@martinlacour4880 4 жыл бұрын

Deutsche Bahn is equally expensive if you don't buy your ticket far in advance or need to be flexible. The Flexpreis is almost 140 euros travelling via ICE, but the ride is also an hour faster than by Flixtrain.

@timothy1_200 4 жыл бұрын
olli2591 The Flexpreis doesn't cost always exactly 140€. Maybe if you book for the train that comes in 10 minutes. The difference is that it is flexible ( not like in the uk ) and with an BC50 ( for 20€ per month or 5€ per month if you're under 27) you get 50% of. So for a Flexpreis from Frankfurt to Köln it'll cost 40€ (via Sfs 280-300km/h)

Windows dirty, seats with decades of built up dirt. I was in a compartment, The AirCon didn't work and opening the window meant it was insanely loud. Take earplugs! I went from Berlin to Hannover but at that point you didn't get dropped at Hannover HBF, rather a station outside Hannover, you make the last km's on the S-Bahn for an extra 3 or 4 Euro. From their website, this has improved too I notice. I thought I would never use them again, but after seeing your video maybe I will give them another go. Thanks.
