Leather crafting typically with straps use - screw type rivet. “ Chicago screw rivet”. You can also buy Aluminum or copper rivets that are used with a ball peen hammer… if you are desiring to trim that extra steel rivet - cut down to about 1/4 inch then get after it with a hammer. Those straps will wear out before the rivets ever do! My only suggestion shorten the straps so you don’t end up always walking on them… if you decide to cut them recommend hot knife or burnish the cut nylon My caddis float fins came with straps and buckles… going to add a ankle safety strap - don’t want to risk loosing

Using a nail heated over a flame works great for making holes in nylon webbing. Holding the nail with a pair of pliers, heat it red hot. easy peasy :)

I really enjoyed your video and learned a lot. Very nice innovation regarding the straps. I was wondering why you opted for a rivet rather than configuring the existing holes with a buckle that would fit the 1 inch strap. While I haven’t tried it yet, it struck me that using a a buckle similar to the factory straps would act as a stopper to hold hold the strap in place. Kind of a hybrid of the factory straps but with the upgrade of spring loaded tensioning it seems that it would be both easier to use, as well as provide satisfactory tensioning for the entire outing on the lake. What do you think?

@@edg4462 yes, we tried buckles with slides but there was so little room above the boot with the slide that we couldn't get buckles to latch. Maybe we needed a smaller slide? But yes, that would feel a lot more secure and keep them in place better, less chance of losing them, also it spreads out the load better instead of concentrating it like the rivet does
