FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

Never flown a float, never even been next to one, but to me there is something absolutely sexy about the look of one. May have to rethink my retirement goal of a home with its own strip, and consider a home on a lake instead. Love the older guys teaching method. Calm, cool and collected, and very positive feedback. Hope someday to get a float rating by someone just like him.

There is something so elegant, so magical, about the way the floats come off the water. I suspect it is the way that we typically see things move through the water which creates the preconception of those objects remaining in the water: At speed, a boat hits every rising crest in the water with a resounding thud and splash. But floats on a plane, with each rising crest, the splash is diminished until there is none. Instead, an increasing gap exists between the floats and the surface. How did this happen? What has made this large, square float become so weightless that it rises above the water? I understand the science of flight, but will never fully comprehend its majesty or its magic. Thanks Steve for sharing your adventures with those of us who are for now, only flying a cubicle. "Best view in the world..." I concur whole-heartedly.

Hi Steve, I also took two hours of sea plane lessons with a Cub on floats. It was very enjoyable and I learned a lot. Some years later, a few of us bought a Republic Sea-Bee, where I accumulated about 250 hours, flying the lakes of Tamagami, Ontario. My friend had an island on the Southeast arm of Tamagami. We had permission to keep the airplane at Sudbury airport during the Summer. I had every situation any sea plane pilot would have. The thing is, I never got a seaplane rating!

Great video, my son was an instructor at Jack Browns, then he flew Falcon 10's for a while . Now he flies Caravan Amphibs out of Ft. Lauderdale all over the Bahamas. I flew a J3 float plane out of Jack Brown's that belonged to someone else. It was my first, and was a blast. I almost bought it but couldn't at the time. I just bought a 46 J3 land plane in February. Got about 14 hours on it now, and love it.

Excellent video, it gave the feel of actually doing the flying, I have .6 at Jack Browns, it's a Sun-N-Fun thing to do. What I really like about flying floats is that if you ever have a really bad landing all you have to do is look for the floats, the plane is right under them.

What a smashing old bloke to learn from! He's about the coolest chap I've ever seen, lol. I can't imagine that anything would ever ruffle his feathers. If I'm ever in the position to learn to fly, I'll gladly move across from the UK to learn with this man I feel that I could take off and land on water already now.. He seems to put you at your ease.. yet still talks clearly and with obvious knowledge and authority in his field. Just perfect. Thanks for posting. .

I went to church camp in Winter Haven Florida and every day a Piper Cub with floats would fly over head. I asked one of the camp counselors who that was and she said he's a world-famous water skier in his 80s. She said that every Easter he would drop eggs into the field next to the church and let the kids have them. I Also saw a Beech Starship fly over-head there once.

Steve, this is without a doubt your best video to date. I know you say you are not an instructor and are careful not to give advise but by letting the third party give the instruction you have nailed it. I felt like I was sitting in the plane with you soaking up the advise and feeling the wind with the door off. I have a set of floats in my hangar for my Challenger II advanced ultralight just waiting for me to complete my training. This video has just pushed me to get it done asap. Thanks and keep up the great work!

Very nice, Steve! This actually made me feel a little emotional. My very first job as a teen was to help an Air Canada pilot friend of mine give float endorsements. I used to see a J-3 Cub on floats just like this as a Student Pilot in Central Florida back in the late 90s. I wouldn't be surprised if this were the same cub. I thought I remember seeing it flying in and out of a small pond by DED but I don't see any evidence of Sea Plane activity there now, but hey a lot can happen in 20 yrs! A few years after I got my Private I was able to get some stick time and Dual instruction in a PA-18-150 on floats in South Carolina and to this day it's the coolest flying I've ever done! I've pretty much lost any interest in becoming a commercial pilot but I'd love to get into some Back Country flying one of these days!
