May 24, 2020 we floated Ponca to Steel Creek to Kyle’s Landing on the Buffalo National River. It was a 10.7 mile float. Steel Creek is just down the river from The Ponca access and is a 8 mile float to Kyle’s landing. Also on the trip is a half mile hike in to Hemmed-In-Hollow to see the tallest single fall waterfall between the Rockies and the Appalachians. It is a 209 foot fall accord to the National Park.
The water was about 2.9’ which made for wonderful floating conditions. It was the middle of the Memorial Day weekend so the river was packed. We usually don’t go when it’s crowded but after 8 years of wanting to do this float we were determined to not miss the opportunity. The float is water dependent and only floatable for a few months out of the year.
With being a busy weekend, there were lots of people and lots of boats. Some people were rude and unknowing but it goes with the territory on busy weekends. We did our best to stay away from the crowds but sometimes you just have to endure. Lol
Ponca to Steel Creek was really nice with no one on the river in that section. At Steel Creek we met an onslaught of floaters and though changed the dynamic of the float, we were able to see some interesting things and of coarse do some fun people watching.
Overall we really enjoyed the float and we will be back! Enjoy the video! It’s never enough justice for the beauty of the Buffalo National River to cram a whole days float into 20 plus minutes of film.
