I have a 1542 with a 25HP 4 stroke, added floatation pods to the transom, made a huge difference in performance and no water coming over the top of the transom. Well worth the money.

I have a 03’ Yamaha 25 four stroke on a Lund 14 SSV tiller.It’s a deep V, very light boat. Just me and gear about 28 mph. I don’t have electric tilt & trim. I had to install a fin on the cavitation plate to get up on plane easily. It also made it ride much “flatter”. No dolphining. On a flat bottom boat I don’t know if it’s necessary. Nice boat you got there. Congratulations on captains license. Cheers from Chicago

I think that your boat doing 30 mph is really great , that's very fast on water and having the well full didn't affect your speed at all , still 30 mph which is awesome I'm sure even with another person you can still get 30mph

I was doing 37 mph with an f15 in a 12w and a 12 pitch prop. The trick is engine height and trim. I made a jack plate for mine and ran my cavitation plate 1.5 inches above the bottom of the boat.

1minibean thanks. I just tested a newly bought 1440 jon boat. Top speed was under 10 mph with mercury 2005 15 hp engine. Trying to find the issue that cause the slow speed. I watched a couple of your vids. That boat moves pretty well with that motor. Some rough water. I don't think you'd want much more than a 9.9 hp because you wouldn't get to use it unless it was calm. This is impressive results. And the F25 is a compelling option if you're stuck deciding between a 20 and a 25 tiller, the Yamaha F25 is basically a strong 20 as it is a 2 cylinder design, it has less displacement (432cc) as the 3 cylinder brands (500cc) but more than the 20hp 2 cylinder options (>350cc). It is a true in between and offers the best combo of power and weight savings. I'd like to know what the fuel burn difference is compared to a Tohatsu 25 and see if having less displacement makes a difference (even though the Tohatsu is working less hard).

i am going to start off with saying good luck with your captain license. i am a 100 ton QMED. generally speaking, you should hit rev limiter unloaded, but never loaded. adjust prop pitch accordingly (+/- 1 pitch) in your case. it seems like your boat could only accommodate 2 or 3 persons max. factor in the weight of the people and gear +(cooler of beer). all of the weight will mostly make its way toward the front which will make planing more difficult. if you did your speed test in fresh water you may want to go to salt on a calm day. you will gain some speed for bragging rights. saltwater is more dense and the boat floats higher. same way when we swim in it (easy to tread water). pitch the prop for how you will use it commercially and keep the prop now for recreational use. stainless props are nearly indestructible and have incredible wear resistance to bumping in to sand bars and such. however, they are heavy and send a shock wave to the gears in the lower unit when shifting gears.

I have a 12ft Jon boat (tracker toadpole) with a 15hp 2stroke Yamaha, with me alone I’m getting 25-26mph. I’ve tested some different props available on Amazon and the stock 10 pitch gave me the best speed. I have lined the floor with wood and carpet but I think at most added 50lbs and I weight 220. Is that a good speed or is there anything I can do to give me more speed. I saw a guy with the same engine on a 14ft run 28mph. Engine has stabilizer tabs and I don’t know if it helps or hurts my speed. I’m wondering why my 12 won’t do 30mph. I’m thinking about up jetting my carb to get more fuel. Any thoughts? Any help is greatly appreciated!

@@MountainManKm the Horse power is required to push against the water. If a hull is efficient and does not produce much drag force then you could have enough speed even from less strong motor if it has same propeller pitch and RPM. Because of that yamaha 2.5hp is twice faster vs competitors.

@@RUS_US I have a 15hp yamaha 2 stroke, I want to cut and weld my own exhuast, widen it, and make it bigger, mill the head just a tad, drill biggers jets and build a cold air intake for the carb, I know also depending on the height that you have the engine on the transom makes a difference and like you said your pitch and rake, I guess I just never thought about it like that. I mean I knew the hull shape mattered and I knew the prop did too, but ur right if the rpm is matched with a good hull and prop it can go just as fast. I still wouldnt believe it would be faster in acceleration.

I wonder how does the trim angle affect the top speed on this boat? Neutral setting vs moving the column away from the transom to compensate bow going up when in max speed. I plan to do some tests and a vid when checking different angles on my small Honda F15 engine and a crescent boat :)
@FloBass
@FloBass 3 жыл бұрын
On this boat the trim angle made no difference in top speed. It rides on a very small pad. Even with a 9.9 it would ride on a small pad. It really needs a jack plate to raise the motor to go faster. Then you’d most likely need a prop with more pitch.

I just ran the testing with the 12 pitch prop vs. the stock 11 pitch on the DF25A. 3 mph faster top speed, the engine loves the prop. BUT - I noticed it takes more to get up on plane. The truth is I put the 11 back on because I prefer to have that perfect blend of hole shot and mid range beastly power and ease of on plane times and be satisfied with 27 mph top speed. I used a solas amita prop and I have a chirping or kind of squealing going on which drove me nuts, not sure why. I never had that happen with stock prop. I also noticed my motor mount bolts were loose, this may have been the cause of the noise. (22 hrs. total time on the boat and Motor). I will retest on the next nice day. I posted a video last night of the chirping noise. - Thanks, Jeff

Rated for 15hp... but I will be running my free 5hp 2-stroke for a while until I am done adding all the goodies like trolling motor and fish finder.... and am done building out the boat to the way I want it. Luckily, we have a billion boat ramps in my area... so I don't have to travel super far by main motor. It would be nice though... to be able to put in at the fresh water canal/river at both ends of my street... and cruise the 5 to 10 miles to salt from the end of my road. It would both keep the salt off of my trailer and rinse the boat and motor out on the way home.

I finished my boat build recently and fish the same area, and I agree about those jetskiers. you know you can get to lake Osborn to from lake ida through the canals and in between theres an awesome local boat ramp that hardly anyone uses. hit me up if you want to know, its even empty on Sundays.

They already do. They launch and race on that same stretch I started the vid in. On my way back to the ramp some dude on a ski wasn’t watching behind him when he started it up and I got blasted by his jet when the ski started up. Nothing can be done about them. No courtesy what so ever.

went out last night and when I got there I saw some kids with a few jet skis all trailered up and out of the water and they started them up and started to rev the engines. I started laughing and yelled keep reving, do it louder, knowing that they where frying the impellers.

Here's a little trick I did back in the day when I lived in marathon, to get the most out of my 18 hp Johnson we would wax the bottom of the fiberglass boats we had plus weight distribution was critical to plane out fast. My boat was a 16 footer v hull and my friend Chuck's was a 14 foot homemade Boston whaler the we built. Buddy would they hual tail and air borne in 2 to 3 foot swells.

I had a $3,800 lb Sea Ray and the motor would push that boat at 36 same motor on an 1800 lb boat top speed the same 36 it depends on how the gearing is and the prop that you're using. If it's just you and the livewell you could go with a speed problem and get a lot more speed. If you're going to put two more people on the boat keep the torque prop

It's definitely a good speed for what I need it to do with passengers and the well. I wont take the boat faster than 25 when I have passengers. There are a lot of long runs I'll be making when I fish alone, so I will eventually get a prop with more pitch to bring the rpm down to a better operating range at wot. It will get better fuel efficiency dropping down 500 or so rpm too.

Stock prop that came on it. 9-7/8 x 11-1/4. The tracker is super light with just me in the boat, and no other gear it bangs the rev limiter, so it could go faster with a higher pitch, but it would decrease torque to get up on plane. The motor is now on a 15 foot mod V duck boat & the factory prop is perfect to get the boat on plane with me and two passengers. It pushes the boat about 24mph with that kind of load.

Just saw it on your description, was going to say sure sounds like it's hitting the Rev limiter. You need a spare prop anyways might as well go up a couple pitches. It will probably go just as good on a longer boat. Happy guiding.

I’m talking with a few prop shops to get a better understanding of the science behind it. I’m sure it would push a 16” just as fast. I’ll upgrade the boat when I run a dozen or so guide trips out of this one.

I’ve been saving for a new outboard all winter. I think you sold me on this one. It’s very close in price to the 20 Merc efi I was looking at, but way faster. How’s the back of your boat sit with the 25? I have a 9.9 Honda that weighs like ~117lbs so I reckon this would be about the same at ~126lbs. I have a 14’ v with a 52” transom, so slightly wider than your 1436. Concerned about weight cause I’m kinda fat lol

I've been looking at 1650's with the seat livewell, but only issue is I bait up with threadfin shad for clients, and they don't last in square wells. You need round edges and a circular flow of water. I'm hoping I can modify a 1650LW model with my well.

If you put hydro foils on your cavitation plate it should get on plain I got a 9.9on a 14 ft v hull and I get 22 mph and also tried trimming up the motor then hydrofoils will allow you to do that which will save on gas and more weight in the bow also love your content man
@FloBass
@FloBass 4 жыл бұрын
Boat gets up on plane in 2 seconds so I don’t think a hydrofoil is needed. By myself I got 22mph with the 9.9. About 18 with me and the well full. But once you add another person or another 140lbs the 9.9 would only push 9mph. That’s just not sustainable for what I’m trying to do.
