I have a 03’ Yamaha 25 four stroke on a Lund 14 SSV tiller.It’s a deep V, very light boat. Just me and gear about 28 mph. I don’t have electric tilt & trim. I had to install a fin on the cavitation plate to get up on plane easily. It also made it ride much “flatter”. No dolphining. On a flat bottom boat I don’t know if it’s necessary. Nice boat you got there. Congratulations on captains license. Cheers from Chicago

i am going to start off with saying good luck with your captain license. i am a 100 ton QMED. generally speaking, you should hit rev limiter unloaded, but never loaded. adjust prop pitch accordingly (+/- 1 pitch) in your case. it seems like your boat could only accommodate 2 or 3 persons max. factor in the weight of the people and gear +(cooler of beer). all of the weight will mostly make its way toward the front which will make planing more difficult. if you did your speed test in fresh water you may want to go to salt on a calm day. you will gain some speed for bragging rights. saltwater is more dense and the boat floats higher. same way when we swim in it (easy to tread water). pitch the prop for how you will use it commercially and keep the prop now for recreational use. stainless props are nearly indestructible and have incredible wear resistance to bumping in to sand bars and such. however, they are heavy and send a shock wave to the gears in the lower unit when shifting gears.

I just ran the testing with the 12 pitch prop vs. the stock 11 pitch on the DF25A. 3 mph faster top speed, the engine loves the prop. BUT - I noticed it takes more to get up on plane. The truth is I put the 11 back on because I prefer to have that perfect blend of hole shot and mid range beastly power and ease of on plane times and be satisfied with 27 mph top speed. I used a solas amita prop and I have a chirping or kind of squealing going on which drove me nuts, not sure why. I never had that happen with stock prop. I also noticed my motor mount bolts were loose, this may have been the cause of the noise. (22 hrs. total time on the boat and Motor). I will retest on the next nice day. I posted a video last night of the chirping noise. - Thanks, Jeff

I love it.... I have a new 2019 Suzuki DF25A on my new 2019 smokercraft V14 and I am getting the same numbers. With my wife and 75 lbs.daughter and a full cooler for the day I am getting 27-28 every time. I have a stock 10 1/4 - 11 pitch prop. The thing is, I have the same speeds at 3/4 throttle as I do wide open, but there is always a big hit of thrust that snaps my head backwards when I hit the throttle no matter where it's at, but no more speed. I can't seem to figure it out....makes me think it can handle a 12 pitch. There is no limiter hitting, but I have that extra thrust all the way through the range even when the numbers stop. That 3rd cylinder really helps with torque, but our numbers seem to match with your Yamaha. My boat is a bit heavier, I believe it's at 185 lbs dry. I'm afraid to run stainless because there is no give when hitting shit in the water. I live in upstate NY Saratoga Springs and we only have the fresh water up here and it's got lots of tree and rock to look out for. Let me know if you think of it when you get a different prop, I'd love to know what you discover with it. Love the Yamaha, its sweet. I'm at 147 lbs dry with my electric start engine, and manual tilt doesn't bother me either, I just find the sweet spot and leave it there all day. I also have a 15 inch shaft motor and boat transom, it's a menace for many reasons.... Thanks man - Jeff

That smokecraft is a nice boat! The 3 cylinders will give you a great holeshot. Always was curious about those Suzuki's. The best thing to do is get a tachometer and note your rpm at full throttle and top speed and talk with a prop shop. You'll also need to know the weight of your boat as well. They'll be able to tell you if a prop with a different pitch will help or not.

Trim that motor up, when you gave the drone footage you could see the front of the boat had layed down on plane. Keep the bow up and you’ll add 3-5 mph. Not to mention it won’t prop wash as bad in reverse. I’m running 20 mph, 2 people, gear, 14-36 war eagle with a 9.9 Yamaha 4stroke. Running a 15hp carb & stainless prop
@FloBass4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I wanted to put a 15hp carb on my 9.9, but I knew it wouldn't be enough especially with my baitwell. It already bangs the rev limiter even with another person in the boat along with a full well so I'm not sure if I'll get any more speed out of it, but I'll give it a shot.

*Trim it out as far as possible. All these imbeciles saying put weight up front have zero idea. This is impressive results. And the F25 is a compelling option if you're stuck deciding between a 20 and a 25 tiller, the Yamaha F25 is basically a strong 20 as it is a 2 cylinder design, it has less displacement (432cc) as the 3 cylinder brands (500cc) but more than the 20hp 2 cylinder options (>350cc). It is a true in between and offers the best combo of power and weight savings. I'd like to know what the fuel burn difference is compared to a Tohatsu 25 and see if having less displacement makes a difference (even though the Tohatsu is working less hard).
@SkypowerwithKarl4 жыл бұрын
I’d go with the same pitch but a quality stainless one, this will load it just a tad so you don’t tag the limiter when it’s just you and still have enough holes shot when you have two bodies and gear. Keep the old prop and tools onboard, if you’re prepared you’ll never need it luck.

After watching both this video of the Yamaha 25HP(nice power plant) and the Yamaha 9.9HP, got me throwing a few numbers about; basically cracking 30MPH easily using the 25HP (26Kts/25HP) but staying with MPH, the 9.9HP achieving 22MPH. So 60% less power available represents 27% loss in speed, not bad going, calculating one way , but conversely, a 36% speed gain requires 2.5x power increase - better displays the power required to overcome mostly a combination form& parasitic drag. Not withstanding that a different pitch may achieve more speed. In terms of power / weight and all things that "drag" away performance - How much does your boat weight empty sans engine, your own weight, fuel tank. You mentioned the live-well volume of 26gallons (98L/98Kg) knowing that with the aforementioned performance was still 30MPH, Using the 25HP, be interesting to observe performance degradation with incremental weight gain, adding weight until only 22MPH can be achieved. Curious to see just how much weight 60% less power translates into, knowing the 9.9HP can, with yourself onboard achieve 22MPH Regards, Stay safe

Hey Graeme. The 9.9hp motor was just fine when it was only me fishing. Even with the livewell full and me in the boat, I could still get 18mph from the 9.9. As soon as I added another adult passenger the boat would only do 9mph. It could not get on plane. It could only push the water out of the way adding a lot of drag. So far with the 25hp I can get it to do 27 mph with me, the livewell, and another adult passenger.

@@FloBass Hey Eric, thank-you for Your reply. That is interesting - How just adding another adult, and that's the end of it, insofar as getting on the plane. Both handy little engines, but the 25HP is a surprise.Take care

@@graemedicks3139 I have a Mercury 9.9HP (carb) on my Gheenoe Highsider. Solo (200LBS) with gear I can get 21-22MPH. Two riders (400LBS) plus gear I can get 16-17MPH. Requires a prop change, but that is super easy on these small outboards. I've known several people get comparable results on small jons with similar loading and prop change. I am not saying you should get a 10HP outboard. Just saying if set up properly you can plane a boat like this easy and get a decent speed. If I had a boat like the one in this video, its Tohatsu/Mercury/Suzuki 20HP EFI no power trim all the way and three times on Sunday. The weight difference to get that extra 5HP is A LOT. If you simply must get a 25HP, make sure to get with power trim. Tohatsu/Mercury/Suzuki 20HP and below very manageable without PT. Above that, its a back breaker.
@graemedicks31394 жыл бұрын
@@KungPowEnterFist Thank-you for Your reply. Good information and further backed up below, by "Takin' it Outdoors" comment' - the correct propeller is vital here, considering the lesser amount of power available. Diameter as much as pitch. To much pitch, and beyond a certain weight and she will bog down,unable to plane. It boils down to what you want to do with it. Appreciate your thoughts on power trim.

I've seen where ppl will attach a piece of rubber mat onto their transom to help keep the backwash out. Make it about 3 or 4 inches taller. Not rocket science. I'd love to see my 1640 hit 30 mph. We race to the duck holes on a river.

Pitch can go up 1 or 2 more inches for more speed if u want
@FloBass4 жыл бұрын
Definitely going to experiment. In reality I don’t need all out speed. Especially with clients in the boat. Even at 30 if I hit a gator people are going flying. Safety is #1. But I still want top performance when it’s just me.

FloBass the more pitch the less low end torque. You’ll windup with the hole shot of a 10 hp and unable to put much if any weight in the boat
@wmkess4 жыл бұрын
What pitch? Factory aluminum? I”d imagine you can go up in pitch and prob go to a stainless prop. Also that motor would be best paired with a slightly larger boat imo. Something like a 1648.

I put 2 , 12”x12”x12” float pods on the back of my 14ft. Flat. I have the same motor but with elec. start. It really made a big difference in the handling & performance of the boat. It also cut way down on back splash ( water coming over the transom) .

It's really not bad. I exaggerated the back splash, but it can still happen. I don't plan on sinking any more money into this 1436. Plans on replacing it have been in the works before I bought the 25.

I have a 12ft Jon boat (tracker toadpole) with a 15hp 2stroke Yamaha, with me alone I’m getting 25-26mph. I’ve tested some different props available on Amazon and the stock 10 pitch gave me the best speed. I have lined the floor with wood and carpet but I think at most added 50lbs and I weight 220. Is that a good speed or is there anything I can do to give me more speed. I saw a guy with the same engine on a 14ft run 28mph. Engine has stabilizer tabs and I don’t know if it helps or hurts my speed. I’m wondering why my 12 won’t do 30mph. I’m thinking about up jetting my carb to get more fuel. Any thoughts? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I see so many guys doing speed test with their boats and motors that are not properly set up. You need a tachometer ("Tiny Tach") to see if you're operating within the proper RPM for maximum performance. This will help you decide if you need a different prop with more or less pitch. You need to raise the motor up on the transom so that the cavitation plate is level with the bottom of the boat or slightly above. If it blows out drop the motor a half an inch at a time till no blow outs. This applies to all sizes of outboards. Every boat that I have ever put together usually needs a different prop than the one that came with it. I own boats 10'-10hp to 34' pair of 300hp Verado's.

@@FloBass I forgot to mention a while back you need to add one or two inches of pitch. That light of a boat and that much horsepower you should be able to hit right at 34 to 35 mph. Drag on the lower unit of a small motor at those speeds becomes critical so raising the cavitation plate up to the bottom of the boat or slightly above would really would help. Got an update?

Am I mistaken or does that engine sound like it has an occasional miss? or is that caused by hitting the rev limiter?
@FloBass4 жыл бұрын
If there's no wind, or I'm moving with the current it hits the rev limiter if I keep it at wot. I'm assuming what you're hearing is the audio clipping due to the excessive wind noise at 30mph.
