One of the first stops in the fall that we wanted to make was to pay a visit to Sean and Sasha from Edible Acres. Together, they have created a vibrant, bursting-at-the-garden seams plant community on their 1/2 acre plot-equipped with chicken compost run, (which will be subject for a follow-up video).

To get rid of an underground wasp nest when I was a kid, my father hung a piece of fish over a 5 gallon bucket of water filled about half way. The wasps ate so much fish they couldn't fly and fell in the bucket and drowned. No pesticides and it was cleared out in a day.

Yeah, we humans should learn to share food with other animals instead of just viewing them as pests or threats, to co-exist with the animal kingdom, even insects, bec they too have their natural uses in this biodiversity. Actually, it is man who take too much land, space and territory away from animals. Kudos to this man for respecting and acknowledging the uses and roles of other creatures around him.

I co-exist with the wild boar in my forest. They eat some of my grass, bulbs etc on my land. I’m happy for them to do it even though locally the farmers hate them. I then allow the hunters in my forest, they kill them and I get 40kg of meat every year. It works well for everyone.

They are the reason I started keeping chickens last year, the reason I became interested in fermented foods, and the encouragement to fearlessly just try something. I have so much respect for edible acres and the way that Sean supports Sasha, the plants, and animals. Even in the beginning when asked who does most of the gardening Sean turned it into an opportunity to support Sasha, as even though she is on camera less her impact on the garden is still very valuable and Sean does not hesitate to share about her great skills in the garden. He speaks with a genuine, calm, deep compassion for all beings he speaks about. And that is rare and truly admirable especially in the times we live in today. I hope their channel continues to grow.

I found them because I was looking for more New York-based KZbin channels doing nature-based work that I wanted to learn about. I stayed for the content, the knowledge, and for being one of the most chill channels I've ever encountered. I swear every video seems to be both a journey as much as an education. Seeing their land featured on another channel in a way I never get to experience their land is wildly entertaining-- and equally as soothing!

My plants acted exactly as he said - tomatoes sitting there for months and just barely growing. 30:34 Another nice trick with nettles is that if you look really closely the needles tend to point upwards slightly. So when handling the plant if you start low and kind of grab in an upwards motion, you will actually flatten the needles/hairs up against the stem and they won't sting you. I'm not sure if I'd ever eat them raw like Sean did though! LOL he's more adventurous than I am. I'd rather cook them to kill the needles first.

23:55 The birds up here (Between Toronto/Ottawa) also don't really eat the seabuckthorn. It's a truly wonderful plant, just make sure to get a named variety with small thorns. The wild versions can have 3 inch long thorns, which themselves have thorns. It's like the worst parts of thorny honey-locust. However there are so many wonderful varieties like Chuksaya, Hergo, etc which have very small thorns. This way if they run by rhizome you can dig them up and not impale yourself on accident. The berries will often last right into February, completely untouched by wildlife. The ideal picking time is sometime between Aug-Nov, afterwhich point they start getting quite bitter. They are still good (medicinally) but will be very much an "aquired taste". They taste like medicine because they are. However if taken in peak ripeness, and also if mixed with other fruit, they are a FANTASTIC flavour. These in a nice tea, just sitting in it are amazing. The leaves can also be made into tea. But the berries can almost be like Chinese Dried-Goji tea. Think of it almost like a bubble tea where you drink the berry-infused tea and then eat the tea-infused berries at the end. Such a fantastic fruit.

It's amazing to see the huge variety on only 1/2 acre. I have rented here in Georgia 17 years. All of a sudden my landlord wants to sell. Eke! But maybe if if I plant enough, nobody will want to.buy. Mischievous but it might work to keep me living here. At age 78 I am terrified at the idea of being put in an old folks home. So I guess I will get busy this winter. Your perennial plantings are a good idea. I will adopt that idea.

@aidanminnick9306 2 жыл бұрын
@@dh.151 yess exactly! it will help to hasten the composting process because of the extra moisture and nutrients. Bacteria break down carbon with sufficient access to nitrogen. Which is why meat spoils fast and smells bad, the bacteria work so fast breaking up the nitrogen based proteins that oxygen is taken up too quickly and anaerobes take over and produce methanous/sulfurous compounds along with other byproducts. On the other hand wood chips are mostly carbon and water so they break down slowly

Such clever & hardworking people. Land is always used best to feed then to earn it's keep, then to profit. Your time & commitment has to have results which ensure your financial security in old age otherwise it is just a hobbie & reduces the benefits that you will need later in life when no longer employed or mobile. So many elderly people live in poverty & much of that is not making everyday count to build life security. Investing in yourself like this not only promotes good health thru eating well but by being physically active all the time. No gym membership or burning dirty fuel to go anywhere required.

Plantain WORKS for stings! I've also seen it eliminate a rapidly-rising welt on a 2yo boy's eyelid from a bee sting. He'd been stung a year before and swelled up to grapefruit size, and was taken to the ER right as anaphylaxis was beginning. This time we were at a pond, and while he was in the water he got stung. By the time his mom picked him up, I had found some plantain growing, and started chewing it. I plastered the spit poultice on the site, which was already bigger than my thumb. The boy, felt it working and took some to leaf to chew, to replace my poultice with his. The swelling never got any bigger, and was almost gone within minutes. I've used it for myself as well, countless times. Most recently, last week, I also found a nest of ground wasps and luckily got away with only two stings. I don't have an allergy, but nonetheless I immediately found plantain and plastered the two sting sites. The pain almost immediately goes away, or at least down to just an itch.

Very enjoyable to watch and learn! Love how you're loving and living off the land. You could make handmade soap and sell. With all the botanicals, you're halfway there. Subscribing now.!

I thought it was masterful how the good gent sent his tethered companion away to tend the loaves. Never to return. Whilst he entertained the succulent. For a moment I thought I was watching an episode of Downton Abbey! Brilliant! Cheers mates!!

Lucerne is also a great nitrogen source. It also has many health benefits. I would eat it just like you did with the parsley! Perfect for green smoothies.

Great tour. Really captured the vibe of Edible Acres. It would be cool to film Sean walking the Flock property and see how he evaluates the land. Also, any plans to tour Akiva's place?

Sasha likes to hide from the camera. Sean spends his life trying to get her in front of the camera for us. Sasha, we love you! We’d love to see more of you!!

I think Sean realized she was uncomfortable and perhaps the bread was an answer to that problem?

You can see her in the background at 23:50 :) I think the bread was just a good excuse to get off camera.

I think she agreed to be off camera. He sounds like he is botanist but if you guys watch his older video he has been doing this stuff for years. Who knows he maybe did went to school and study scientific plants.

Definitely get yourself an epi-pen if you’re going to let those wasps stay. You can develop an anaphylactic allergy with enough stings over time. Plantain will not stop anaphylaxis unfortunately.

I just found this! Very well spoken about the gardens to where we can understand. I enjoyed how you explained where you both started and what you are working on now. I will be binge watching your channel now. High diversity and density with interpersonal relationships! exactly. Thank you for explaining this so well and thoroughly. #goals
