Good clips Lauren!. The guy in the van was angry he got stuck so tried to hinder others from getting through. He could have got squashed in between the lorry and his van.

Driver of the van could have at least moved out the way when the HGV is trying to get past and not just stood there next to it! Selfish man

water up the exhaust doesnt matter, the pressure of exhause gases is enough to carry on by with no issues. Water going in the air intake for the engine IS a problem, but most sendible people should know how high up their's is and calculate accordingly... or fit a snorkel!

They did, the red Land Rover came back and helped him out, and about 5 or 6 people tried to help him start it and then gave him a lift back to where is lived.

How to cross a flooded road 1st check your air intake hight on your car if it faces forwards or is low down do not drive in floods 2nd well done your car has a high up intake near the top of the wing Now stick to 1st gear keep them revs high and speed low try to keep a bow wave like the landrover did 3rd donot stop!! Or back up reversing can shove water into the exhaust or ram water into the intake wich will hydrulic the engine 4th if you do not make it becuse the water was very deep do not try to start it back up exit the car and get to dry land asap 5th if you make it congrats make sure to drive the car hard for 20 mins to get it hot as water could have gotten into the eletronic connectors on the engine 6th DO NOT TRY TO CROSS WATER WITH A CURRANT BECUSE CARS FLOAT AND WILL GET SWEPT AWAY All learnt via experience

If I were directing. Also, its not smoke. When cold water touches a very hot surface it turns to steam. Thats what you could see

I really feel for everyone over there especially too near Xmas. when you talk about climate change to people they dont take it seriously only because they dont truly understand the consequnces. The ice sheets in greenland are constantly melting. Melt the ice the less heat is reflected out and the warmer the oceans are , this is what feeds storms and hurricanes.

Water can go up the exhaust, ever heard of back pressure? Sucks gasses up the exhaust when you lift of the throttle, e.g gear changes. So, you need to keep in gear and high revs :)

Haaaa!! Water gettin up the exhaust! what a comment. Maybe water could travel the 6 ft distance up the exhaust, then up the downpipe and into the engine if the car was switched off in 5th gear and being pushed backwards. When you lift off the throttle. the engine is still sucking in air, and combusting it. The only reason it stopped is because water got sucked up his intake. Best thing you can do, is keep in a low gear and keep a slow constant speed and hope to create a wave with your bumper to push the water out of the way.

Your ok with the exhaust, normally the idle rev is enough to keep water at bay (bit of a struggle though and better chance if a diesel), its the air filter being submerged that kills the car. Thats why some land rover Owners (including my DF) have snorkels, this is connected to the air filter. I can go as deep as I like as long as the water does not go over the top of the snorkel, but that's above the roof so I wouldn't be driving through anything like that!!

If you keep the revs up you can keep the water out of the exhaust pipe, if you stop for a second the water will get sucked inside and flood the engine, its game over

They tried to jump start it, but didn't work. He left it on the road for a few days and a van come and collected it a few days back im not sure more than likely he is! But don't know him sorry!

Actually hurricanes are getting less frequent and the last five years in the hurricane record reveals the lowest period of landfalling hurricane intensity of any five-year period dating all the way back to 1900. Superstorm Sandy wasn't the first big storm to hit New York, 1954 I believe was considered worse. It was only a few months ago that the country was in drought and even now the official government stance is that climate change will see us with less water not more.

I've had engine problems occur a day or 2 after driving through floods so I'll take an alternate route if possible instead of risking it.

Definitely need to drive through floodwater slowly, else you create a surge of water in front of you which goes over your bonnet, gets sucked in the air box and ruins your engine

If that van had sucked water into the engine, it will be a very expensive repair bill...! Water doesn't compress. If I was driving that truck, I would had offered to push the van out. Wouldn't have damaged it in any way.
