I was taught by my father that you never come to a stop if you're driving through water (assuming it's no deeper than 10-12 inches deep). If you stop, it allows water to go up and flood your intake. By keeping steady gas pressure and forward movement, you can make it through. I did this in Bethany, OK, in a Nissan Sentra in the 1990's with no problem.

Authorities tell us to 'turn around, don't drown' here as there are many treacherous swampy spots, and some drivers have tackled murky water- not knowing its true depth. They drowned when they ran off into a ditch- this even happened in the City Limits! I was terrified one time when I found myself on a brick street after a storm. It was totally submerged! I kept going forward at an even, slow pace as you describe, and my little Saturn made it through because the wake created stayed away from the exhaust. Scary, though!
