Floods in Italy claim lives and leave thousands homeless | DW News

Heavy floods have followed days of severe rainfall in northern Italy. Fire service officials say the provinces of Ravenna, Forli-Cesena, Rimini and Bologna - particularly the cities of Faenza, Cesena and Forli - are the worst affected. Emergency teams have rescued drivers who were stranded in their vehicles and people who were trapped in their homes by the water.

I live in Cesena just 100 meters from the Savio river, and when my wife and I saw the flood starting, we decided to go to my mother's house 20 kilometers from the city. The main problem was that nobody, and I repeat nobody, told us what to do when all that mess started. We asked the Police, Civil Protection and Carabinieri for help and nobody knew exactly what to do...

Yeah, the same happened here on Balkan (Croatia, Bosnia). People were telling me it is ordinary May weather. I don't remember ever seeing it like this. But hey, they were comforting selfs with "it is ok". Now I am comforting them the same way, from a safe distance. I guess our Governments get used to ignoring science and generally problems. Only low intelligence can it be.

I happen to live in Bologna and yes, we have had a number of problems, but only a few streets have been flooded, and nobody was seriously harmed or killed in the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region. It should be mentioned that these rainfalls were exceptional, but that geologists, climatologists and reasonable people in general had been warning the authorities for a long time, without receiving any response. We were aware that the network of rivers and canals in the region is not sufficient to manage emergencies: there are very few lateral basins or escapes when the water level rises, river banks are weak (and the authorities did nothing to reinforce them, for years) and maintenance is occasional and unsatisfactory. For instance, a canal connects Bologna with the river Reno, it is no longer used for navigation, but it is still there, 30 km, and the only ones who try to keep it clean and remove the debris and rubbish are some elderly volunteers. This tragedy was not totally unexpected.

@@LathropLdST my jibe was more general towards propable climate change causing corporate culprits. Fiat was just the first italian company that sprung to mind. It was maybe not fair of me to call Fiat out especially, as i am actually not aware of their current implementations of policies that would lead to a Co2 reduction and such like. It should have become evidently clear though to any corporation that their responsibilities are manyfold here and i do not envy them.

Some companies changed their policy into a more green-friendly approach, but only in the last few years and generally citizens themself have been unresponsible about the topic. Don't touch the right to eat a ragu bolognese (tomato sauce with meat), some would say. Till the last moment. Then this happened. And some still won't take responsibility about climate change (I'm italian, i am a shy vegetarian and got jokes and all)

The F1 Italian GP cancelled because of flooding exacerbated by human carbon emissions - I wonder if the sad irony was lost on the sport? not really. if they designed and build reservoirs and basins and wetlands to retain that water, then that'd be the case. but if such infrastructure to retain the water doesn't exist, the water will all go straight to sea.
