Floor paint update... How my Rust-Oleum Home painted floors are holding up 6 months later

I am attempting to paint my kitchen ceramic tile floor. I am going to paint it navy, then I have a stencil in white. I think I have to use 2 coats of the navy, one with the stencil and then 2 coats of the sealer. Wish me luck!

One of these days I would like to paint the bathroom we have black tiles on the floor and in the shower too we didn’t pick those tiles eventually I would like to paint them white since we can’t remodel it and the other room is a bedroom that has terra cotta floors the color is fading I would other restore it or use another paint color

I've just signed to purchase my first home. (As in earlier today!) It has all tile floors. And I hate the color. So I'm planning to paint the floor in the whole house. (French Grey is one of the colors I'm considering as well!) I've been debating doing different colors in different rooms just so it's not all the same, but that seems like it might not be worth the effort/extra paint. Thanks for sharing all of this!

It's held up great for multiple years and I had no issue with the smell! No where close to smelling like oil based paint does.

Great update on this! I've decided on using the Home product based on your first video and this makes me feel even better. Only question I have is, any issues with the matte finish? Second thoughts on using a different sheen? Seems like it still allows for easy cleaning. Thanks for this update!

I like the matte! Haven't regretted that decision haha plus, I think the Rust-Oleum Home line only offers 2 top coat options anyways (matte or semi-gloss).

@@KatherineForbes I think matte will be the way to go compared to semi-gloss. I plan on doing this on all the tile floors in the house. Kitchen, bathrooms, and our entryway. Typical late 90's beige tiles with cracking grout. Thanks again for the reviews.

Just a heads up that the ultra white might be REALLY white! The white you see in my pattern is actually "Steam Gray" and it looks just like the white of my cabinets, doors, trim, etc. Other than that - have fun and just take your time :-)

Can you paint over it you want to change the color or do you have to strip the color off first and then paint? Hey Robin! You can paint however many layers you want (to change color) BEFORE you put on the top coat. After that I honestly don't know because I haven't had to do any touch ups.

Did you use a stencil in the bathroom or just tape off the stripe pattern on each tile? It looks great!

I used 2 strips of cardboard I cut from the sides of a cereal box haha I used one to tape to the floor (just lightly with a small piece of tape on each end) and then the other as a spacer. I did a test tile to make sure I got the exact right widths before I went ahead and did the whole floor though... highly recommend :-) Only I know which tile is the test tile, but I did trim the cardboard a tiny bit after seeing it dry the next day to make it perfect for the rest.

I had a cracked tile or 2 in my kitchen and just left it... painted right over it! They're obviously still cracked, but not noticeable unless you get super close to the tile. If your cracks are bad though, this won't fix/cover it up.

Been researching the best paint to use on my bathroom tile floors. The tile is very smooth. Not your typical tiles that have a bit of texture. Do you know if this product you used will stick to a very smooth surface? Also, when I was researching the best paint the recommendations were an epoxy or oil based paint. I noticed that Rust-Oleum is water based. Any thoughts about this?

All I know is that I did NOT sand my floors beforehand like a lot of people suggest... and I've had the floors painted for 2+ years now... and they still look great. This product was made specifically for floors, so whatever the Rustoleum paint can says, I recommend following it (that's what I did)!

Haha well I got them done for the Super Bowl and then we went to someone else's house! Minus going in to get lunch from the fridge (with socks on) the next day, we did stay off of them for 24+ hours though.

I really want to do a similar job on our summer house. The tiles are at least 40 years old and not shiny like yours. They are simply just shaved rocks I don't know what are they called but I'm just at the considering stage having seen your work here

@@castiel7330 good question! The Rustoleum site says the paint works for "Ceramic & porcelain tile, concrete, hardwood, laminate, vinyl & more" ... I'd suggest trying a test spot if you can before going all out on the whole floor. Is there a spot under an appliance or in a closet you can try? Maybe do one spot with resin and one without?

How does the seal topcoat hold up? Mainly the grout lines? I have two boys and the tile in their bathroom is what I want to paint. I am constantly scrubbing the grout, when they miss it tends to travel down the grout and as you imagine leaves a lasting odor. I really don't like the tile that is in their bathroom which is also our guest bathroom. I am looking for a rather inexpensive DIY fix but really trying to solve a better seal on the grout. Also how strong is the paint odor?

I've done 2 coats of the topcoat each time I've done it and it's been just fine. And actually, the grout lines seem to hold up even better than the tile. The grout lines do show dirt more so than regular grout because it's a solid color, but they clean beautifully if you give them a scrub. And as far as the paint, it doesn't smell strong at all!

Did you use a base coat? I don't remember you saying that you did but wanted to double check. I've already painted the bathroom tile once and the paint peeled right off. I didn't use rustoleum. Any other advice I would so appreciate it. Thanks!

The gray/white is technically considered their "base coat" layer. HIGHLY recommend you check out this product if you want to try again, it's held up really well for me!

@@lovliesusie1 I just take a wet swiffer and reach under it - I don't ever move it out haha The only scratches on my floor are from when my husband kindly (ha) put his ladder directly on the tile to get into the attic access that's in the bathroom ceiling. The ladder needs to be tossed so maybe it was the ladder's fault, but if you do try to move anything heavy on the painted floors, I'd definitely recommend pulling it out onto a towel! PS. I'm going to touch up that spot on the floor and create a video of the process very soon!

Nicole Lalonde Bourgeois, I used to have vinyl in my kitchen with a very “puffy” design, and the vinyl seemed soft to me. I didn’t do this for my stove, but I had my washer and dryer in the kitchen, and I often had to slide them out by myself. They had rubber grippers on the feet They made indentations where the appliances had been sitting. I was worried about making more indentations or otherwise damaging the floor, out where it could be seen. So what I did was fold up small smooth cotton knit cloths, about the size of a washcloth, and put one under each foot on the W&D. It worked like a charm. You couldn’t see the cloths, as they were underneath, and they slid in and out slick as a whistle! No damage to the floor. And when they got dirty, I just replaced with some clean ones, and tossed the dirty ones into the wash. I have since discovered that they also make felt disks, with adhesive on one side, for putting under furniture, etc. they might work for a non-puffy floor.

I've never used a steam mop so I'm not much help with this Q. I will say, this paint makes the tile/grout easier to clean than before I painted!

It's not meant for the shower - but check the Rustoleum site for all the specifics for sure! I think they have other products that CAN though, just not this one.

Im going to attempt to paint my daughter's condo kitchen floor. Its 18x18 floor tile standard grout - we have chalk painted the lower cabinets graphite grey and uppers in cream. The granite counter top is patterned some grey/greens, plums etc. The backsplash is a cream diamond shape pattern. I originally wanted to do a checkered pattern but i think its too much pattern in one room. However, I wanted to do some sort of pattern or stencil perhaps smaller. Any Suggestions? and if you do the base color first, does the stencil come after that?

For the final coat you're supposed to wait 24 hours... but I won't lie, I tip-toped to the fridge in socks a couple times during that time. I did the final coat later in the afternoon and then we went out and when we came home we went to bed. So maybe if you time it just right you can get away with it?

Oh gosh - I'm sure it would be durable enough since it's tough enough to last as a floor BUT you should know that the gray does discolor a little bit when wet. It is FINE when it dries but as a bathroom counter it might get wet a lot, so idk. See if you can find any info about it on Rustoleum's site (also, they might even have another product for that!)

Katherine Forbes I was wondering the same thing. So is the grout showing in the bathroom your original grout color or did you paint it with the floor paint? Either way how did you mask off the grout/tile so straight?

I'd recommend checking Rustoleum's site for more info - but I personally don't think I'd do it. I notice the paint changes color when wet (it dries fine) so that might leave you with an odd splotches a lot if you use the paint on your counters.

@@KatherineForbes thanks!! We actually have the rough floor tiles as our wall tiles. Therefore, they are not slick like regular wall tile.

Your dog might prefer toilet water because the porcelain keeps the water cool. Try some ice in his dog water bowl and see how he responds.
