You should do a video showing how to cut out sections and actually replacing of the sub floor. It would be helpful to those of us who have gone through over 5 layers of old floors to finally get to the subfloor and it's in such bad shape it's literally flaking off in layers like an onion or like one of the multi-layer biscuits. I feel like just covering it up would be the going the route the previous owners did when they first got the water damage, and like the drywall, they just covered it up with wallpaper and called it fixed.

@@sw204me Thanks for the comment. when deciding on a proper course of action it is important to consider the clients needs as well. If i was to cut the subfloor at the hardwood then I would have created a weak spot in the floor that would have been impossible to manage as the joist was not under the hardwood. This would have caused me to remove and reinstall the entire floor in the hallway. Definitely not in the budget at this point. Just because the mind was offended by restoring the wood does not mean it is not structurally sound and capable of performing long term. Having solutions that don't cause new problems is very important in my business. it is much harder to repair without sutting things out and in most cases more advantageous. Cheers!

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I think you misunderstood me, I wasn't at all saying that you were wrong for covering it up, I was saying for people like me who have to cut out the subfloor because the damage is severe, it would be great if you had a video that demonstrated how to do that properly.

The screws in the video are Paulin #8 x 2-1/2" flat head square drive phosphate coated screws. I can't find them in the US, however, Paulin is owned by Hillman who makes a similar screw under P/N 48248. Also, Simpson StronTie and Senco make similar flooring screws (Senco P/N 08200Y).

I bet my bathroom issue is one you haven't see before lol. Appaently when the old farmhouse I live in, switched from an outhouse to indoor plumbing, their idea of a bathroom was putting 3 walls and a roof up, right against the house at the side door.. so the bathroom door, is actually still the original side door, including the window! When trying to change the bathtub, not only did I find a rotted floor, but also the reason it rotted to begin with... Apparently, the tub was still on the old grey water system... the overflow and waste water assembly, didn't go anywhere or attach to anything... there is a 4 foot hole under the floor boards, and that tis where the tub drained! No wonder the floor is so rotted! I wish you could see it, you would not believe it! lol

I’m all for throwing down 3/4 inch on top of a 1/2 subfloor, but, how do you deal with clearances when, for example, you tiling a mud room, and the new height (1.25inch subfloor, ~5/8’s Tile & Thinset), prevents you from opening doors, the transition from laminate to tile is a tripping hazard, baseboards don’t line up, etc. Etc. Im still learning and appreciate your videos, but there are considerations to be made when making a 1 1/4 Sunfloor in an existing house. Please shed light on this. . Thanks.

Great video as usual. I have a rotten floor around the tub and toilet and am going to replace the plywood add ditra so I can tile with natural stone. Is it better to use two sheets of 5/8 or one sheet of 3/4 and one sheet of half inch? I read somewhere that the second sheet should be rotated 90 degrees so the strength is in the other direction? Thoughts?

If I’m renting out an apartment is this my concern or will it take more than a couple years to manifest? I just moved in and noticed some small peeling on walls under the dishwasher and near the fridge. Both in areas not visible during normal daily activities. But curious if I should do something about it or not.

If you know there is mold, ain’t Ing over it with Kimzey doesn’t negate any mold growing on the bottom side in the floor/wall cavity. Leaks in your HVAC can suck and blow those spores into other parts of the house. Fix it right and replace the moldy wood.

You're videos are wonderful! Okay I have a bathroom that was put in where a room was once. I can see no water damage under the tub, but the floors from the tub to the wall where the toilet and sink are, is bowing. What I can see is they did not put plywood sub floor down they just kept the floor boards from the room and then added backer board, followed by tile. I believe that the sub floor is not supporting in all locations and needs to be pulled up re supported and then put plywood, backer board, and then tiled again. Do you think this is the right direction to go?

I ripped up tile and the mortar.... but there are areas that the wood was definitely water damaged to the point its chipped away and gone. Is it ok to cover it up with a new piece like you did here or should it be ripped out and replaced? No mold. Not weak in my opinion but the integrity of the board is comprised for sure. Area is near a tub / shower

Hubby and I bought our home a little over a year & a half ago and right away noticed that our kids bathroom was leaking around the shower into the garage. We caulked the area until we were ready financially to renovate. I knew we had a bigger issue when the bathroom tiles would move around as we walk. We also noticed that the toilet was not being held down to anything! Low and below, I ripped out the shower, and starting removing the tiles, and there this black ashy soot like thing on the subfloor. Plus there’s mold. Plus the subfloor is so rotted that it’s literally flaking off. What should we do??

I’m not doing a bathroom renovation, but instead a swing set project involving cutting the supports on my old playhouse, which I outgrew, to save the playhouse from complete destruction. The swing set itself, as well as the sand play area, will be removed. The wood from the swing set and the frame of the sand play area will be used as firewood. The swings themselves, as well as the ropes holding them in place, will be burned on the burn pile at my dad’s business. However, the burn pile is on residential property. Not commercial property. And I have the best vehicle for the job. The John Deere XUV855D Gator 4x4.

I had a contractor install a single sheet of rolled vinyl for the bathroom floor that was originally clean, free of mold and water intrusion a few years ago. You would think the floor glue and solid vinyl on top would sealed it but when I remove the flooring there were heavy black mold throughout underneath. Which leads me thinking that spray paint aint going to kill any mold long term. And then when I thought my 1-1/8" sub floor was rock solid with no external sign of water damage other than in a tiny corner area by visual inspection and by jumping on it, termites were feasting on the internal layers. It's like cancer you just remove more and more subfloor till no sign of damage and hope it doesn't run underneath the walls into the next rooms.

Looking to purchase a home with good foundation, good floor joists but the floor bounces when we walk on it. Looking for advice from you because I trust you. I searched through your videos but didn't find this topic.

I'm a bit confused. Wasn't the old subfloor flushed with the threshold or the camera angle makes it look like it's flushed? How come the new plywood still flushed with the threshold?

Summer is a good time to do renovations as there is almost no chance of your building products getting wet from the elements.

I have one old board where the back of my toilet sits (1950?). Should I pull toilet and do thisprocedure everywhere except for where new tub will be? Gonna lay nice Pergo floating floor. Thank you!

as long as the board is strong it can be sealed and worked on top of. Cheers!

If you haven't purchased the Pergo yet, I'd consider using "luxury" vinyl plank instead. I have Pergo in part of my house (including the kitchen) and think it looks pretty good, but I think that the vinyl planks are better suited for areas that are likely to get wet. Just my $.02

What about the wood floor in the hallway? You left it black, soft, and growing mold. Will that correction be another video?

Hi, DIY'er Here in 2021. Could you please advise what fastens, specifically, you used to renovate this flooring? The label was just out of focus. Also, observing different floor levels. What might do to address this, provided the flooring/underlayment itself is in good condition? Any insight or reference to your other videos will be most welcome. Tnx. And keep on advising. You do it well.

What’s a good sealent/primer to remove pet urine from the subfloor before installing hardwoods ?
@DM-uj1rb
@DM-uj1rb 4 жыл бұрын
You cant just apply a primer to cover an odor. If you do, the odor WILL come back. Depending on how saturated the plywood got, you may have to remove it completely.

Hey Jeff! Love your channel! Was wanting to find out if I could send you an email of a picture of my subfloor that I found between my shower and our closet between the wall. Would like to describe what I thought about doing and get some pointers. This crap can be scary looking so I just want to touch base with someone who knows and who has seen this before (hopefully lol).

Hi, I have a oversized washroom trying to make it into two washrooms. For toilet drainage, sink, n shower should I call a plumber or just go with the renovation contractor who does it himself.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 5 жыл бұрын
Make the contractor break down the job so you have a quote for the plumbing work. Then make sure he is getting a permit and inspected. see nif he still wants to be responsible then.

After watching this video i want to tackle my bathroom. My second floor bathroom leaked into my dining room. I went to home Depot and they suggested using a cement board. Should i just use that or use plywood then cement board overtop?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 5 жыл бұрын
Personally I find that cement board as a backer for floors is more difficult to work with than plywood. However in both cases the install technique is the same for tile over top. Cheers!

Jeff I love your channel I am currently remodeling an entire house gutted it down to structural walls it is a crawl space floor and cant convince my wife to run water lines in the attic what type of pipe do you recommend for running in the crawl space for water lines I live in Arkansas so I get 4 months of freeze and thaw or how about a video of your thoughts on each type pros and cons of water line I'm about to start that process from the water meter through the whole house thanks once again I love your videos given me all sorts of ideas and sent me back to fix things I had wrong before it was to late lol

pex is the best performer in freeze thaw scenarios, however make sure to keep the plumbing on the interior of the air and vapor barrier so it does not freeze. also insulate the crawl space walls and add a heat source to avoid freezing. cheers!

an acrylic repair can be done but only if the crack is not associated with the drain. Then you need to have access from underneath to do the repair as well. Cheers!

Ran afoul of the problem due to sneaky toilet supply leak, got that fixed. Then Ipeeled back the sheet vinyl to find OMG gone subfloor. As I am older and slower (and my cars too small to haul the stuff). am in process of finding outer limits of rot and getting mold abated for safer work for the person who will do the install of the patch. Just hope I'm not looking at any joist issues as this up stairs bath.
