I think in times of depression the only thing you listen to is music. You don't really want to have people around you. You don't really want anything anymore. I know that. I then hear more music than usual. Either you hear music that makes you feel confirmed, that pulls me down further, or I hear music that brings me back up over time. There is room for every kind at such a time, except for absolutely happy music. What lifts me up again is calm music that has a positive effect. With corresponding lyrics. Nightwish (Floors short videos on her channel too) and Aurora (her funny interviews too) are the examples for me in particular. People who have never experienced this will never understand this disease, no matter how hard you try to explain it. Only someone who suffers and has suffered from it can empathize with it. This affects those who think creatively most of all. That is why so many artists die so early. Every creative person is particularly susceptible to this. It happens when the thoughts can no longer be brought into harmony with the world in which we live. Everything seems pointless. Then for me music is the most important thing in the world. They mustn't annoy me, they have to gently push me back in the direction in which I want more for myself. It is generally difficult to explain. But I wanted to try.

It's strange how powerful and melancholic music can make us feel much better. For me it came with aging. When young i preferred lighter and happier songs than now. Thank you Tom for speaking up about this topic and help lift the taboo that unfortunately still rests on it. If more artists dare to speak up and, maybe, share their own experiences openly, more people could be saved from some possible irreversible fate through recognition and acknowledgment. People with fragile mental health need to know and see that their feelings are being taken seriously. Lots of people are vulnerable for influences on social media. Not only by celebrities, but also by influencers. They can get sucked into images that are often unreal. Those images paint pretty pictures that aren't necessarily true. Not everyone is capable of making that distinction. Sadly, we've lost too many people, including great artists, to depression and other mental issues. Please, keep up the good work!

I was brought up in a household where being a man meant it was Ok to hit women. I saw my mum get heat-butt by my dad many times, as well as regular drunken fights. Long story short - by dad killed himself via hanging one Sunday lunch time. Myself and my 2 sisters found him and ultimately cut him down from the attic, called emergency services etc. I've never been an emotional person. I can't cry. I remember not even crying at my dads funeral - I even stood up and spoke a poem. Recently I discovered some KZbin reaction videos that showcased Floor and Nightwish... and this has been the one thing that has made me actually feel something in a long long time. I listen to Nightwish and Floor's voice along with the melodies literally make me bawl my eyes out. It's so beautiful. For me, it's a release - and I thank you for that. I don't even cry infront of my wife.. she doesn't know about Nightwish... but for me, it's my escape. I feel more human, more emtional hearing Floor's voice and Nightwish's music. Thank You. JC

Great video. Made me think about that old story: "Man goes to a doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor...I am Pagliacci.” Artists help people to go through hard times and bring much happiness to fans, but too often we forget they are humans too. We are selfish, we want more, more, more, we want them to release a record every year and be on tour every year and every day, and we get angry because they don't "come to our town" or the last record is not 100% like the idea we have about how "it should be"... We put too much pressure on creative people and we expect them to be always at our disposal.
@thomasberg57174 жыл бұрын
Kurt Cobain, Chester Bennington, Chris Cornell. Three tragic examples that haunt me as a fan to this day. Artists need to be allowed to step back, and if they want to bust out a K-Pop side project to get their head straight, buy a t-shirt.

I'm suffering from depression for a couple of years now. When ever I get to a "low point" (when everything feels so empty and hollow that suicidal thought arise), I lock myself in my room with my guitar and a laptop and try to "write the negativity out of me into a song". By trying to catch the feelings that bring me down and transform them into music, I am able to get like an excentric view on them. It is hard to explain. I can see them like a third person, not as the one attacked by them. And than I write a song. It's like taking that negativity out of me and transform it into art. Creating something with it instead of letting it tear me down. I can't do this until I am really down in the hole. But afterwards it always gets better.

Floor that is very important question. Music is big part of my mental health. Great support. When I was teenager, I found metal music and it gave me a safe way to release my frustration and stress, all the pressure. I came home from school and blasted Sepultura, Pantera, Kreator and all those great metal bands with full force and instantly felt better. This powerful music cleared my mind and relaxed me just like that. Often I just listened and grinned, it was so good! I was at the beginning of my musical journey and on path to greater self awareness. Twenty years have gone by and metal is embedded in my heart and soul. Music has led me to think much more and has given me perspective in my life. Yes, there are so many songs I can relate to. I feel music has greatly strengthened my mental stamina. I have seen metal music addressing all sorts of topics in life and I think that is so important and wonderful. Nowadays my musical taste has broadened and I am more interested in song meanings. Good songs make me think and set things into right perspective when everything seems dark. It is like therapy. Yeah, music is very important for my mental health. Without it I would certainly not be the person I am today and my mental health would be in ruins. Music is so incredibly powerful thing.

Music is an important thing in my whole life. I listen to different styles during each day. I listen to Opera, Classical, Classic Rock, Metal, alternative , Rap and Country Music. They all have affects from motivation and relaxation, to social gatherings and meditation. One reason Nightwish is extra important to me is I can get multiple genres and emotions in every song or album. Helps wash the pain and depression away as well as making me motivated and strong at the same time. Thank you for this series.

Music plays an important role in my mental health. I have had a couple bouts of situational depression, currently deal with PTSD, chronic pain, and have to cope with being a paraplegic due to a freak accident. Before my accident I was very active. Some days are very hard. Music has always been a source of inspiration for me, but now I really don't know what I'd do without it. It helps me through the days when just giving up is tempting and reminds why I fought that fight for over a decade. I wish I could make music, but that isn't where my talent lies. I have great respect and appreciation for those that can and do make the music that is the soundtrack of life. Music inspires me when I write (personal hobby, not done for any reason other than to get the stories out of my head). It used to inspire me to greater effort during exercise, helped me get into a good headspace for work, helped me wind down when coming home from work, made housework more fun, and made waking up easier. Now, well, there are some days when I don't know how I'd deal with the pain without music. It helps keep me in the here and now and adjusts my mood. I don't know what I'd do without music and my cat.

What a great time to engage with a person who have had experienced such a volatile condition before and now is a counsellor for people with such issues. Floor, IMO, just a layman opinion, you and Tom are the right people to stay in touch with Marko right now. Awareness of mental health issues is still very low in this modern world. I've had a colleague whom had joined our company as a fresh graduate, got married, gave birth to a child and leapt off a building. Only after the incident that we found out that she had been seeing a psychiatrist and were on anti-depressants for a number of years. We felt so angry with ourselves for not recognizing that and at the same time so helpless because she never spoke about it. There is also a friend who was a successful manager but is now behind bars because of the darkness he has inside. Kudos to you for speaking up about this condition. I would like to think that you're doing this in support for Marko. I also hope Tuomas and the rest of the band members are coping with the departure. I remember Tuomas saying that he won't be able to handle another vocalist change. This change is on another level altogether, given the long history Tuomas, Emppu & Marko have had all these years. I hope everything turns out well for everyone. Peace, lots of Love and stay safe. IGHTWISH Forever!!!

I didn't know that you and me have the same connection with the melancholic (or let's say true and honest) music. We Finns are melancholic, and it's true and genuine. Of course we like happy songs (never so much as Swedes 😅) also, but our true nature is melancholic. In some strange ways the melancholic songs give us the strenght to cope with issues. Happy songs are only for superficial fun. But the most important thing comes now. As we all know you are the Valkyrie, so please use all of your powers to lure Marko back! The old saying that "Musick has Charms to sooth a savage Breast, To soften Rocks, or bend a knotted Oak" is so true, even today. Depending on one's mood there is a genre of music to complement it. For a person like myself that appreciates many different types of music (but likes metal more than the rest) this rings true. Sometimes I need music with dark lyrics and a deep, heavy beat to match my mood, and sometimes it's classical, or pop, or country. But the point is, that music keeps most of us sane. Thank you, Floor, for talking about this.

I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder and I've been living with it for years, but seeing it discussed is always good because it's not talked about enough. My father was neglectful and (emotionally) abusive and treated my mother terribly. She's with another man now who is much more of a father to me and she's so happy. I'm also a high-functioning autistic. I'm introverted. All key risk factors for having depression I guess. Floor, there's something about your presence that is just calming and uplifting and pleasant. Music (especially yours) has always brought me joy.

The timing for this episode couldn't be better. Thanks for sharing your views on such an important topic, especially now that we know Marko needs time to heal himself. I'm terribly sorry for his departure from the band, but nothing is more important than his well being. Music has a strong healing power. All the best! 🤗

Music has gotten me through some tough parts in my life. Particularly when a family member passes. When my grandma passed in 2015 I had took it very hard. Music reminded me that it's ok to hurt. And that hurt will never truly go away. You learn to deal with it.

Listening to Music is my therapy literally. I am bipolar, with depression, notice immediately when started Listening to twenty one pilots he spoke to me, he openly suffers from mental health issues and his lyrics touch on this and make me feel less alone and ppl feel as I do. And with you, it's not just the lyrics of nightwish but you can tell you feel what you sing. I'm so glad you and other artists are more open about these issues. 🙂

Floor is smart enough to ask questions and seek for knowledge. Admire that. Ad astra doesnt mean to the stars... it means much more and deeper.

For a long time I've used melancholy, dark or sad music as therapy when I'm feeling down,. During those times, happy songs don't work. To me, many times the artist, band and singer can put into music how I'm feeling. It's like they understand and they are there with you in your dark times. It's very comforting and uplifting. Thank you for posting this and thank you for your music.

I have been teaching myself to play guitar this last year. Very therapeutic and I am making steady progress. It makes me smile. No frustration as I have no expectations other than to keep doing it. I saw someone had said "I play guitar for myself...not for others." And I agree with this.

As someone who’s used music to carry them through life for about the past decade, I learned that music for me is ultimately inspiring. It inspired me to live my life in a new and more positive way. Nightwish’s music coming into my life was particularly, the band was my first concert after my father and grandmother passed on the same day just hours apart. It was the most alive I had felt in months. This was almost 3 years ago and I recently decided to go and study psychology and pursue a career in clinical psychiatry. Coming from a really bad place, it takes time to work in yourself and ultimately change your mindset in life to come into this more positive way of living, and learning about how important mental health is and caring for it was life changing. Always strive to be better than you were yesterday. Life is truly something that can be enjoyed and if you’re suffering, you don’t have to suffer forever, please reach out. Thank you so much for this episode, Floor and Tom ❤️

I love the fact that Tom recognized that he had a problem and sought out a path to understand and develop a support system for himself. Kudos. We all look at performers as "entertainment gods" and don't realize that they might be coping with the same issues as most other humans. I hope you might someday write a book that shares ways you coped with issues as in might be highly relevant during this "groundhog day like year". Keep the faith and thanks for sharing.

Thanks Floor!!! This is so important right now. Considering that I’m going through a major depression it’s a validation that we are not alone. This year has been hard for artists and listeners alike. Funny enough, I decided to quit my job to take care of me for a while and renew myself in order to move forward in a better more fulfilling way, which I know its a luxury not many have. The same day I saw Marko did it too. Music, and particularly your music has been therapeutic for me because it helps to focus on other things. So it’s vital to talk about this and acknowledge it. 🖤🤘

For me listening to dark music when I'm feeling down, makes me feel like I'm not alone in this. There are others who experience the same things I do. Sometimes, when the music is darker than I'm feeling it can even work uplifting, "see, it's not so bad, there are people having it much worse".

I'm currently out for a walk and listening to music as it always helps clear my head and the notification for this video popped up on my phone. After listening to this I just want to say thank you both for this and for what you do. You may never know how much your music helps others throughout the world but on behalf of so many of us and from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU! ❤

Yes. We do have to talk about and lyrics has the same technique. And the 'importance of knowing who you are at, the source of the feeling, if it's anger, shame, blame, identify the problem'. A good therapist is always good for the guideline.

When I was in my teens, I wrote gobs and gobs of music as a way of getting my emotions out. I went through a really rough time between the ages of 17 and 19, and it really did force me to reckon with a lot of darkness and pain that had been buried to fester. By putting it on paper, and then recording it on my little laptop, I both acknowledged it as real and allowed it to have validation, even if it was just for myself. That let me also separate it from myself so I could process the feelings in a healthier way, instead of letting those feelings drag me down into my own head. Music let me start a healing process that I desperately needed.

Yes, thanks so much for this talk and this great video, for everyone who fights against there "demons"..Thank you Floor Jansen, Tom Englund, and Marco, yeah i will missed you too for sure! For me music(which i at least listen to daily) in general plays a somewhat great role for at least my mental health and in my life, especially rock/metal/punk/hardcore music so much as it almost like therapy or yes therapeutic and it goes back about 21-24 years ago i think when a school mate of mine first introduce me to great bands like Nightwish, Kamelot and Blind Guardian(all of which i listen to day this day and seen live(at least two of them), and now when i am 36 i have discovered and listen too so many more great band/artists, and been to in my opinion at least quite a lot live concerts and some music festivals(which i too miss so by the way, but hopefully more to come in the future) in my "young live", so i am so grateful for that!! Knock/pound on my metal heart(s) and ROCK ON!!

For lots of us, life is not always easy. We need music to heal. Music is a healer. So when you feel like shit, dó write about it. So we all can hang on and relate. I’ve been ill lots of times in the past 20 years. With no medicine, I had to wait till it was over. Music is my medicine. It keeps my mind occupied. And lyrics are very important. Thanks for bringing this subject up. It is important for everybody suffering from whatever illness.

This excellent conversation about an important theme and all these comments reminded me of a quotation, I ran into some time ago. You can replace "reading" with "listening to music" ... "The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - which you had thought special and particular to you. Now here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met [...]. And it is as if a hand has come out and taken yours." (Alan Bennett) That's what music means to me. Take care everyone ❤

This is the best one of these you have ever done...Me personally I have struggled during the COVID pandemic. I had Shoulder Surgery last November and due to the Timing of it all with the Pandemic have worked from home since then. So, for 14 months I have been home with very little outside interaction except for my 10 year old daughter. Its been hard and thankfully I discovered Nightwish about 6 months ago and all music has been instrumental in keeping me grounded and moving forward.
